Purchased this book based on the genre, but haven't regretted it a bit. Lilah is a great story with a great twist, especially for those who remember fondly the stories from the bible, but love the embellishment this author provides. The story is rich, the character development is suberb, and the landscape is so vividly described that you can almost feel the ground beneath your feet. This book is part of a trilogy, and I couldn't wait to finish each novel. I will recommend this novel to any one looking for a great story. Also, please look up "The Red Tent" for further reading along the lines of "Lilah."As far as the seller is concerned, I am glad to note that the book arrived in good condition, exactly as described, and on time, too! I would recommend them to other Amazon.com shoppers.
The heroine lived in a very dark time in Jewish history and the book paints Ezra as a very weak character. I thought it was interesting how the author portrayed the years in Jerusalem by having Lilah write a VERY long letter to her husband. The fact that writing then was with a stylus and very difficult makes it seem a bit far-fethched, but it enabled the author the cover history only from her knowledge and feelings.
It's ok !! I like it and read it a couple times every year but beloved Leah and Rebecca's redemption is so much better!!!
I liked Lilah's story. I'm not totally familiar with Ezra's story and his roll in rebuilding Jerusalem but this story is based on Ezra's journey back to Jerusalem to rebuild it. Lilah is his sister and I don't know if the Bible mentions her or even if she has a sister but it is a nice story. I like these kind of books. Historical Biblical Fiction. Give it a try.
I loved Lilah, just as I did the rest of the Canaan Trilogy. Sarah was my favorite, but be fair reviewers. Lilah was a great book. I have never written a review before, but I felt I needed to after reading what had been written about this one. I recommended this trilogy to a neighbor last week before reading all the negative things written here, and I stand by my recommendations. Another fantastic book in the "Biblical Fiction" category is "The Red Tent" (not written by the same author). It is my absolute favorite.
My cousin's reading group at her synagogue read this book, she recommended it, and I read it on my Kindle. The writing was ok, but I enjoyed the story and found some of its twists and turns most unexpected. Talk about the differences your choices can make. I am thinking about reading the other books in the trilogy because of my pleasant surprise from LILAH.
Very wonderul storytelling. Don't read this trying to match it to the Bible. Just enjoy the story and the telling of the story. Our Book Club enjoyed it very much
Another can't-put-it-down book. A page-turner. A very decerning eye for detail. Written from much mediation of Scripture.The only negative point is some missing detail from the French to English translation. Not as fluenty translated as the first 2 books of the trilogy. But saying that it is well-translated and VERY WELL WRITTEN.EXCELLENT STORY LINE!

Plus, the long commute would not offer me much time to exercise in the morning or evening during a work day. But since I work from home three days a week, after work, I can trade in what would be a long ride home in for a run (at least in the summer, winters in NE Ohio are awful!). That way I have more room to eat on the days I'm in Cleveland!3. Time Flexibility - Remote work gives you the ability to get your average forty hours a week in any time during the workweek. My wife and I just had a baby, so that time flexibility really pays off when you are juggling work with visits to the midwife or pediatrician.4. Productivity Analysis - When you are working remotely, you must be judged primarily on your ability to produce, not just where you are sitting from nine to five. It's extra motivating to know that your project success rate is how your company will perceive your value to them. It forces you to manage your time appropriately to get the job done!5. The Ability to Hire Talent Anywhere - For years, companies have been restricted to offering employment exclusively to home town boys and girls, or try to woo outside talent into the home office city. If the talent didn't want to move, the company was out of luck. Now, with remote work options, great people can be hired from all over the world! And an added benefit is that if a current employee needs to move out of the home office city for whatever reason, the ability to work remotely could may keep them with the company, saving that company time and money in finding a replacement.Remote - Office Not Required is a book with a clear mission - to convince companies that currently do not offer remote options, or are skeptical of remote work, to embrace dramatic shifts in their thinking. I'm a big fan of the SvN blog and Rework and Getting Real, so it's safe to say I was excited about Remote when I heard about it earlier this year. Coming from a global professional services firm, we've adopted a lot of workplace flexibility measures to fight back on the expenses associated with office space and our high-turnover/stress environment. I share the authors belief that going remote is the way of the future and this book highlights the reasons for going remote, the arguments against, and methods for optimizing the value of a remote culture.Since I work in IT, I understand the obvious connection between the authors and the software business. I think they did a fine job showing why remote working isn't just for IT and why there are benefits across industries. One of the few shortcomings of Rework was that I thought it was a little too IT-centric; some of the arguments presented there just wouldn't fit well in non-IT, traditional (read: old-fashioned) businesses. Remote does a good job explaining why some of these more traditional old-fashioned businesses can benefit from going remote. I especially liked the sections about hiring and retaining the best employees. Everyone can relate to this and it has helpful that they went into detail to explain exactly how they do it at 37 Signals (since at this point they are pretty good at it).It's a short, enjoyable read. It leaves the reader with a sense of what work could be like if you're courageous enough to think outside the norm and challenge conventions as to what work is supposed to be (and what it can be). I'd argue that almost any business owner or decision maker could benefit from this book, even if for just one little bit of information that makes you follow-up with one of their sourced documents. I know that finishing this book is just the beginning for me to rethink how remote work arrangements can be optimized.

I really enjoyed this book... the stories, the antidotes, the humor and the exercises. This was a great book to pick up and read with a cup of tea before bed. It helped me to feel clear, calm and relaxed.
This book was a pleasant surprise. While I fully expected it to have some good ideas it never occurred to me that they were all gems. The book was full of great links to other relevant authors and even some videos. It was so easy to follow the links to discover another great author. All in all I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to break free of non-productive thoughts or improve their self-image.

I have recently been preparing to give presentations during academic job interviews and although I've given countless ppt presentations, I still felt ineffective in my use of the medium. I have tried reading other books (Why Most PowerPoint Presentations Suck, for example), but have found little use in them. This book, though based on visual processing research, is presented clearly and concisely. Kosslyn describes and gives clear examples of the 8 principles, but goes a step further by exemplifying them in the way the book is organized.Certainly I was aware of some of the general "don'ts" in ppt such as not varying the font greatly throughout the presentation. However, this book helped me understand why I shouldn't do this. By knowing the why behind the rule, I can know use this knowledge more flexibly.Some have indicated in their reviews that the information in this book was "basic." It may seem so, but given the fact that I have seen these 8 principles violated even in the most sophisticated and experienced presenters, I would invoke the old saying that common sense is not all that common. Perhaps people needed to understand why they should follow these principles to be convinced.Finally, I appreciated Kosslyn's treatment of Tufte's argument that PowerPoint should never be used. Kosslyn makes that case that PowerPoint can be a powerful way to convey complex ideas, if used properly. Now that I know the 8 principles, I am confident that my presentations will be "clear and to the point."
This is a terrific book with excellent direction on how to create a PowerPoint presentation which works with, rather than against, the way the mind processes visual information. The concepts are terrific and supported by neuroscience research, and I've been using them to radically improve my own slides.The 'Do' and 'Don't' slides are also very good to bring the concepts to life. There are many lists of "10 things to remember" with mixed value, but you can typically find many useful nuggets in these lists. The author has presented these concepts in live workshops and has worked out the flow of the book so it feels very comfortable and flows well.The biggest drawback is the difficult writing style. The author is obviously a very educated and intelligent man, but this works against him because the reader needs things to be simplified much more. The 8 principles need snappier names to really be memorable for the reader (eg. "The Principle of Perceptual Organization" could be re-named "The Law of Chunking"), and the writing style is a bit flat and not persuasive or energetic. This is a shame, because the concepts really are excellent but readers may not recognize them as excellent when they are presented without pizazz.
This was a good book. Read it based on a recommendation from professor. Ended up changing a work presentation based on the ideas and it went well. Goes into the psychology of the whys.

This book is ok, it is only one more textbook to help with another textbook, but it has good examples.
This is an excellent guide to the visual design of presentation slides (PowerPoint or otherwise). Kosslyn explain his 8 principles, and then provides guidelines for various aspects of presentations, such as text, sound, graphs, and other visuals. At the end of each chapter, he ties the guidelines in that chapter to basic principles that underlie them.However, Kosslyn is an expert on visual perception, not an expert on learning. Therefore, take his suggestions on non-visual aspects of presentations with a grain of salt. For example, he endorses reading your slides aloud, which he says "gives the viewers two chances to understand and remember them". In fact, reading and hearing the same information *reduces* retention of information. For more details, see Multimedia Learning.If you buy only one book to improve your presentations, I suggest that you get Beyond Bullet Points: Using Microsoft PowerPoint to Create Presentations That Inform, Motivate, and Inspire (Bpg-Other). However, "Clear and to the Point" is an excellent additional resource.
