This was a gift along with three other books that are about CERN . He said it is slow reading because some of it is technical but he loves all four books. He is reading all 4 at one time.
Nice book explaining the importance of the Higgs particle. A good explanation of the pathway to the discovery and the result of the tests
expertly written, surprisingly understandable (after about 2-3 reading). I couldn't put it down. The most capable author I ever encountered.
Sirs:The book presented current state of investigation & discoveries in partical Physics. Included was the history of mathematics (Noester equation 0f symetry/ conservation law) & Physics (Durac equations). It also fullfilled my expected coverage of the LHC. Well written book but misses graphics. The author describes several very technical details but the graphics were of poor quality. Book was disappointing to me.
The completion of repairs to CERN's new supercollider has resulted in a wealth of general science offerings devoted to the attempt to explain humanity's most expensive and complicated machine. It is quite clear that a number of publishers are hoping to ride an anticipated wave of publicity to great profit--if and when the Higgs boson is discovered. Having previously tackled several of the related books, I am pleased to say that this volume is one of Dr. Aczel's best efforts; it provides an excellent road map to the intricacies of the standard model--which I now understand a bit better than before--and provides both a more informative and more entertaining read than its competition. To be sure, this is no replacement for a text nor should anyone think of it in that light; rather, it is a story about discovery.To even begin to intelligently discuss the science that makes the supercollider relevant requires massive amounts of backstory. The reader must be introduced to fantastically complex theoretical musings and, I think some editor somewhere has dictated that no equations may be used, although a few of them crept into the appendix. Here is where Dr. Aczel's effort is superior. His recital of the basic underlying scientific principles has all the hallmarks of a capable lecturer--other authors in this area focus almost entirely on their unique and valuable contributions to the science in such a way that makes an understanding of the whole picture somewhat difficult, but this more general work is better able to convey the sense of wonder and shared discovery that motivates scientists to keep digging deeper into nature's inner workings.Now, I grant that perhaps having read several similar books my understanding was primed to better receive this volume; however, I believe that independently of the other offerings, this work does a better job of telling a story and teaching the science. It can always be done better and, frankly, much of it just makes my head spin. Yet because this book can take such an esoteric topic and leave you interested in learning more, the author is to be commended.Highly Recommended
A 3-star rating from means that I don't recommend a particular book, but I would not, in general, deter people from reading it. It also means that, in my opinion, if you don't get to this book on your reading list, then it is not a big deal; no loss.I want to formally begin by saying that, for those who do not like this book, this work is not really representative of the quality of Aczel's craft and ability. He really is a rare specimen of genius, in that his genius spills over from the world of mathematics and into the finer, more liberal arts, as attested to by his prose. In sum, Aczel could have done much better with this work. I think some issues in this book's construction were his fault, while many others were problems arising from the nature of the subject matter (i.e., the genre, popular physics), and the problem of being slightly out of his depth in subtler matters of the history of science (see the link to my blog post below).Some portions of this book are brilliantly composed, as one comes to expect from Aczel's works, like "Fermat's Last Theorem," for example. In other places, I could hardly figure out why Aczel was including a particular bit of information, such as talking about the world's largest tunnels in the world, of which the LHC's is not one of them. I see that he was trying to give the reader some amount of perspective, but I don't think the discussion was helpful (and that most would not find it helpful), and I seriously believe that it took away from the book; I felt like it was filler. In the first part of the book (the first 3 chapters, I think), Aczel bombards the reader with an endless series of numbers, some of which are helpful, but most just make the text a mess. At times, Aczel is wildly successful in adding the perspective that he seeks to give the reader, like in his comparison of a particular detector weighing more than the Eiffel Tower. These successes were outnumbered by other failures, attempts to make the text more interesting. One example is the addition of conversation snippets Aczel had with LHC physicists. However, I think these fell flat. Being someone who was very interested in have the practical story told about the LHC and CERN, having just read slightly technical books on the topic, I found these anecdotes lacking.This review may come off as contrary to what I said a 3-star rating indicates; and I indeed would have been inclined to give it a 2-star rating. The thing is that I really feel as though some people will find this book to be in the 4-star range, supposing they are new (or newer) to the genre. The reason is that a great deal of the discussion in this book is geared toward giving the reader a basic knowledge of information that gets told over, and over, and over again in popular physics books. This is not Aczel's fault, it is just a problem in the genre that needs working out. I think many newcomers to the genre will find Aczel's prose and oft-repeated information enjoyable. Therefore, it is highly dependent upon your, the potential reader's, past experience, in determining whether this is the book for you. If you are a journeyman or journeywoman of popular physics, then I can make a recommendation that should be of infinitely more interest than this book. I recommend "From Atoms to Quarks" by James S. Trefil (this has a very nice breakdown of the physics, it goes a little deeper, and gives you a better chance of understanding the physics, because there is a better context developed), "The Britannica Guide to Particle Physics" (this has an outstanding! section on particle accelerators, and a nice section on brief biographies of relevant players), and Scientific American's "The Elusive Neutrino" by Solomey (basically, this is a much better version of what Aczel is trying to do outside of the human interest elements, but not in strict popular physics form). I have written reviews on each of these books, if you are interested.Finally, I must note that Aczel makes an error in this book, minor but egregious. I have a policy of not discussing too deeply the content of a book, unless it is a scholarly review, which this is not. This book describes, in considerable detail and with good clarity, recent developments involving the LHC at CERN. I found this book to be a good resource providing background on the facility, useful for interpreting current activities at LHC including the quest to discover the Higgs boson to "complete" the Standard Model of particle physics, production of tiny black holes (with possible multiverse implications), glimpses into the relevance of supersymmetry (string theory), and quark/gluon plasma (Big Bang modeling). The diagrams are very useful throughout. Note, however, that the book was published *before* the LHC was really up and running, so it's limited in that sense.

I'm no philosopher or philosophy major, but I enjoy the history of ideas. I'm very grateful to the editors at Penguin for making this highly readable introduction to the Cynics available to general readers. The anecdotes and sayings, especially those of Diogenes and Bion, really make you believe you are getting to know not just a philosophical doctrine but very memorable characters, even if some of the stories are apocryphal. I found myself laughing aloud at some of these characters' observations and stories and sharing them with family in the room.Reading about the men who took the "shortcut to virtue" will probably challenge you as well as amuse you, as well as raise the question: are these men crazy (Diogenes would be locked away for pulling his stunts today), or were they the only sane people around?Highly recommended.
This little volume covers the major figures of the Cynic school of philosophy (the opposite of modern "cynicism") well and at a cost a true Cynic would approve of. It provides, probably, the only fresh translations into English in decades and includes the rare fragments of the philosopher Teles which are usually neglected. Anyone interested in the philosophy of the Cynics, a philosophy that endured for nearly 800 years, and which stressed simplicity and living in harmony with nature will find this intriguing, perhaps enlightening, Well done, by a serious scholar.

Unfortunately other copies are either not very good or are incredibly expensive (and I'm ignorant of their quality). This is inexpensive (as the Cynics would want it) and has great selections of their philosophy. The first I particularly find wonderful - almost a precursor to Anarchism or lifestyle Anti-Capitalism in a way.Great thinkers. Great edition of their work.

Do we delude ourselves about happiness? The Cynics thought so. Named after the self-reliant and loyal animal they respected, the dog, they preached to and sometimes even harangued people they saw as misguided. They dismissed wealth, fame, consumerism and prestige as illusions that actually make people miserable. They wanted to live unencumbered by material things and societal norms that, they thought, limited pure human speech, thought and action. Though they flourished centuries ago, in Greek and Roman times, their ideas still resonate, or perhaps revolt, today. Many, though not all, actually lived their philosophies, often to still shocking extremes. Few 21st century people would attempt to follow their example, though perhaps a reality show could lure those hungry for fame to try, which would of course be completely antithetical to the spirit of Cynicism. Anyone who did try, at least in the industrialized world, would likely find themselves incarcerated or institutionalized. As such, the modern world seems to have rendered the Cynic lifestyle unfeasible. But this doesn't mean the Cynics have nothing to teach our highly technological and hierarchical society. Perhaps we remain deluded about our own happiness and need the Cynics now more than ever?Like most philosophies and ideals, Cynicism evolved over time. Though Diogenes of Sinope often stands as the movement's famous exemplar, many others answered the call and introduced variations and nuanced interpretations. Many studies of Cynicism exist, but reading the primary sources probably serves as the best introduction to this topic as the original texts remain accessible to general audiences. One great place to start is the unintimidating anthology "The Cynic Philosophers from Diogenes to Julian," which covers a few centuries of Cynic thinking, including its evolution and criticisms. It actually covers Antisthenes to Julian, but "Diogenes to Julian" probably makes for a more catchy title. The book's brief introduction outlines general Cynic thinking and principles along with short biographies of each Cynic covered. An interesting question about the affinity of Jesus with Cynicism gets raised, but then mostly dismissed as no proof exists of a direct influence. In typical dialogue fashion, the protagonist, named "Kynikos," prevails. Lycinus, the "normal" antagonist, challenges Kynikos' lifestyle and eventually gets reduced to silence, gradually steamrollered by Kynikos' increasing volubility. Along the way, Kynikos questions and reflects upon excessive luxury, satisfaction of one's needs, health, diet, greed, taking one's fair share, ambition and freedom. He claims that he meets his needs simply, doesn't intervene in the lives of others, enjoys good health, evokes Heracles and Theseus as Cynic exemplars and argues that he pretty much does what he wants to. Many of these same themes are explored and analyzed repeatedly throughout the book. In the end, the most revered Cynics incorporate Cynic principles into their very lives. To these people, Cynicism remains a life philosophy and not mere book knowledge. The ultimate Cynic lives Cynicism.Diogenes of Sinope, of course, has the longest section. But a short section on Antisthenes, Diogenes' theoretical predecessor, follows the initial dialogue. Most of the information comes from Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch, as many of the Cynics own works have not survived. Variations on the probably apocryphal meeting between Diogenes and Alexander the Great appear as do descriptions of the tub he lived in and the "unspeakable acts" he performed in public. Plato appears often. Once he tries to convince Diogenes that if he flattered Dionysius he would not have to scrape vegetables, to which Diogenes responds that if Plato were not too proud to scrape vegetables he wouldn't have to flatter Dionysius. Diogenes' capture by pirates and purported death by eating raw octopus also appear in multiple versions by various authors. Criticisms of Diogenes and Cynicism by Augustine and Johannes Chrysostomus included accuse the movement of simply trying to seek admiration and glory by unconventional means.Many readers may not have heard of the remaining Cynics: names such as Crates (who married Hipparchia, a woman who bravely led the Cynic lifestyle - the only know pure Cynic marriage - and yes, they also did things in public), Bion, Onesicritus, Demetrius, who refuses Caligula's offer of 200,000 in cash, and others follow. Many of the works originated as oratories on various subjects such as virtue, exile, freedom from passion, death, burial, humanity's fate or other Cynic themes. Teles tells the story of Diogenes responding to the claim that a city is expensive or inexpensive. Lucian tells a mocking story of a false Cynic, Peregrinus, who out of vanity ends up throwing himself on a pyre. Similarly, Epictetus mourns the passing of the true Cynic of days past. He seems to think the Cynics of his day were merely posturing. Lastly, the Emperor Julian, not himself a Cynic, defends Cynicism, Diogenes in particular, against criticisms of his day.This collection sums up Cynicism effectively, especially for a newcomer to this often misunderstood tradition. Reading the historical texts, rather than interpretations of them, gives the anthology an immediacy that secondary commentary sometimes lacks. Not only that, many of the themes will still seem relevant to 21st Century readers. And though no one is likely to take up pure Cynicism as a vocation after reading this book, it nonetheless presents a fairly sympathetic and rounded account of these peoples' motivations and mission. Many may identify with the arguments about the ultimate meaninglessness of fame and fortune and excess excoriated by the Cynics. Some may even see applications to the modern world and realize that some things haven't changed after millenia of "civilization." This book seems pointless if most of the recipes say to buy the Betty Crocker cookie mix. It defeats the purpose of actually making homemade cookies.
I got this book for my son - we are trying to introduce him to a new hobby and he seems to have an apptitude for cooking/baking so it seemed natural to get him a betty crocker book!Ever since he received his book (it arrived FAST!) he has been pouring over it - looking at all the recipes, he's having a hard time deciding what to try first!From my end - i love how clear and detailed the instructions are, also that there are a variety of "recipes" that range from "I don't know how to bake" to "i won a bake off this year" skill level!
I would rate this higher but I am not into using pre-maid cookie mixes and some of the recipes call for that. So I had to change it up some. All in all Great recipes and easy to follow directions for first time bakers especially. Would recommend.
Betty Crocker has been a part of my family for generations. These books are perfect to add to your collection. I own all the Big books and the Big red book and love them. They are great for adding variation to your weekly menu or sticking to the favorites you love.One thing I love about these books is they give you examples or the right and wrong way of doing things. They also explain what goes wrong in the examples.
This has the classic spritz recipe. I could've done without the gluten-free recipes; if I want to bake gluten-free I'll get a gluten-free book.

This cookbook was recommended by my Chinese colleagues at work. I would grow the vegetables and they would cook the food. They would share that with me and then showed me what they made and where to find it in this book. For me, this book covers everything and I don't need another. The beginning illustrates each process such as cleaning, various ways to cook, and what ingredients and utensils you should have on hand before you start. Next is a description with photos showing the vegetables, pastes, mixes, etc. that we may be unfamiliar with. We then see how to prepare a feast, platters, family menu suggestions, followed by the actual dishes. I personally consider this the best book I have ever seen on this topic. Everything is written in Chinese and in English. Cooking directions are simple and uncomplicated, a lot less than what I thought. This book is a perfect introduction to Chinese meals and cooking. I bought it in 2002 and have enjoyed it throughout the years.
My mother (who is Taiwanese) has a couple books by the author and when I started to stock up on my own collection of cookbooks I bought this.The recipes are excellent, with a photo of each completed dish. There is also a side comment in most of the recipes that tell which style of Chinese cooking the dish hails from (Peking, Cantonese, Taiwanese, etc.)Many recipes I hadn't even heard of or tried even though my mother makes a LOT of Chinese food. This really excited me because of the opportunity this presents to me. I was even surprised to see a recipe for shrimp that I had tried once in a restaurant that I enjoyed. I was under the impression that I would never be able to find a recipe for that!On the other hand, this book is not for the faint of heart. The book has no "Americanized" recipes and incorporates many dishes that Americans would find repulsive. Soup with chicken feet in it, anyone?
I've cooked a few recipes from this book and they've all turned out well. I believe I bought this because I was seeking a real Hong Rou Shou recipe.
My wife loves this book! Many of the recipes are real Chinese versions. Not the watered down American version you see so often in the USA. Finding some of the ingredients is a bit tough, but not impossible.
I have almost the complete collection. Treasure them.
Easy but authentic dishes. Had a copy while I was a student in college but had lost it over the years. I am glad I was still able to get my hands on a copy.
The Wei-Chuan Publishing Company (apparently connected with the Taiwanese Wei-Chuan Cooking School), has produced a good number of Cookbooks, mostly dealing with Chinese cookery but also coveing other Asian cuisines as well. I own over a dozen of these now and I like all of them. More importantly, I like all of these books for tmuch he same reasons and, accordingly, I have decided to do a general review that applies to each of them and then provide a few individualized comments where appropriate.Basically, the Wei-Chuan publications are authored/editored by several different persons but the format is largely the same. Each book is divided into logical sections (Meats, Vegetables, Appetizers, etc.) and nearly every recipe is accompanied by a good photograph of the result with some recipes having additional pictures of the preparation as well. This feature alone makes these books well worth the purchase. Another feature of this cuilinary series is that the books are written in China and, at least as far as the books on Chinese cuisine is concerned, the reader need have no issues with 'authenticity'. I personally also like the fact that all of the books are written in Chinese characters and then translated into English. This has has an added bonus of occasionally providing some unintentional amusement due to a particularly 'unfortunate' translation but I specially like it as I am teaching myself Mandarin and these books are excellent learning tools. I often take one on the plane with me when I travel (along with dictionaries) and can spend hours happily translating passages. It is amazing how often the actual translation of a recipe title bears little resemblance to the English title provided.Finally, I have to say that the recipes in all of these books are interesting and he ones that I have tried to reproduce have worked out well. Mainly though, I just like reading through these books for inspiration and enjoyment. The money I have spent has been repaid many times over.The We-Chuan books I currently own are as follows:Chinese Cuisine - Very good introductory section. Recipes range from simple everyday dishes to exotic banquet style delicacies.Chinese Dim Sum: Wel-Chuan Cultural and Educational Foundation - Great 'step-by-step' pictures for many recipes. Bit too much emphasis on sweet rather than savoury for my personal taste.Chinese Snacks - More of the same as in the Dim Sum book. No 'step-by-step' pictures but I actually like this book better.Chinese Appetizers and Garnishes - I haven't attempted much from this book but I am thankful for the great 'step-by-step' pictures provided.Favorite Home Dishes Chinese Cooking - As the name suggests, most of the recipes are simple and, thus, easy to prepare.Chinese Cuisine Beijing Style - Lots of Imperial Banquet dishes and many exotic foreign influenced meals that have been 'Chinesified'.Chinese Cuisine: Cantonese Style - 75 Cantonese recipes. Good recipes with nice pictures but a sparse introduction.Chinese Cuisine Shanghai Style - Typically good Wei-Chuan quality but probably my least favorite of the 'regional' Chinese cookbooks.Chinese Cuisine-Taiwanese Style - Excellent Book. Some truly unique recipes I have never seen elsewhere. I love to browse this volume.Chinese Cuisine: Szechuan Style - I love Szechuan food especially but I would still treat this book as a favorite anyway.Indian Cuisine - A nice book but be aware that the recipes Indian dishes for the Chinese palate, not Indian.Vietnamese Cuisine - Great recipes.Japanese Cuisine - Nearly as good as many books I have that are written by Japanese chefs.Korean Cuisine - My favorite of the We-Chuan non-Chinese cookbooks so far,Singaporean, Malaysian & Indonesian Cuisine - My least favorite Wei-Chuan book so far. Somewhat interesting but I don't look at it much.Finally, I have a new Wei-Chuan book on order and will continue to buy from time to time. I will review separately as I read these new books.
What's unique about this Chinese cookbook (as well as others in this series) is that it caters to the Chinese palate(rather than adapted for the Western palate). One finds favorite authentic homestyle recipes that one would not find in restaurants or other Chinese cookbooks that cater to an American audience. In fact, the book is written in Chinese with English translations. The fact that this series includes English translations makes it possible for first generation (and beyond) Chinese Americans (who can't read Chinese) to make dishes that they remember from mom's traditional home cooking. Recipes are easy and there is a picture for every dish.

Seeing Rocky Mountain National Park means time on the park's roadways, and that can be breathtaking in itself. I used this guide extensively to prepare for, and enjoy underway, a long weekend in RMNP. It was a terrific primer and planning tool, and also, a great guide to see, appreciate, and learn along the way. I could not ask for more in a national parks road guide, and in the future, I'd want to have this again.
I'm kinda bummed. I love the size of this book and thought it would be really interesting, but it's kind of dry and even repeats info in several areas. Great idea, in terms of size, but just not very good in terms of the content. A *much better* purchase for my trip to the Rockies was the "Nature Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park (Nature Guides to National Park Series). That was a good buy!
