Review

Praise for The Runaway Species “The authors look at art and science together to examine how innovations―from Picasso’s initially offensive paintings to Steve Jobs’s startling iPhone―build on what already exists and rely on three brain operations: bending, breaking and blending. This manifesto of sorts shows how both disciplines foster creativity.” ―The Wall Street Journal “Unravels the interplay of art, neuroscience and evolution, while celebrating the special thing that is human innovation.” ―Entrepreneur "Which inventions have had the most impact―and why? What can they teach us about game-changing innovation? And how will science and technology revolutionize our lives next? The rest of The Runaway Species sheds light on these issues … bolstered by delightful visuals." ―Harvard Business Review “The Runaway Species approach[es] creativity scientifically but sensitively, feeling its roots without pulling them out.” ―The Economist "A lively exploration of the software our brains run in search of the mother lode of invention… The Runaway Species is beautifully produced, illustrated and written. It sweeps the reader through examples from engineering, science, product design, music and the visual arts to trace the roots of creative thinking to three key mental skills: bending, breaking and blending.” ―Nature "With the pleasing pace of an extended essay, the book offers surprises and insights at every turn, and the authors argue convincingly that basic strategies inform most creative behavior. . . . Essential―and highly pleasurable―reading for anyone who cares about ideas and innovation." ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "The Runaway Species is a simple and delightful read ― no science knowledge required. And in a rare triumph, the fact that this book was written by two authors never got in the way of making me feel like someone was telling me a story or delivering a thirteen-chapter TED talk. " ―Cooper Square Review "Art and science converge in this beautiful collaboration. . . . Divided into three parts, this inquiry covers a complicated set of connected topics in an engaging and surprisingly accessible way. . . . Packed with vivid images, countless examples, and fun facts that will leave readers eager to discuss it with friends, this is a refreshing and thought-provoking book that captures both the wonder of science and the beauty of the human spirit." ―Booklist "An intriguing and riveting mélange of perspectives that successfully delineates what creativity and innovation are about. It is an outstanding and inspirational volume that will have a broad and global appeal. It will categorically transport the reader into the past and the future fusing them together as one scientific structure, constituting an electrifying and enlightening scholarly reading." ―The Inquisitive Mind "A paean to the ingenuity of the human species, a description of the anatomy of creativity and a rallying cry to cultivate our skills for the benefit of our collective future." ―Tes.com "Brandt and Eagleman have written an exuberant book about creativity. If you were a fan of James Burke’s brilliant Connections, or perhaps of Don Norman’s ruminations on design, there’s a similarly sumptuous buffet of brain candy here on which to pig out." ―Neo.life “Readers familiar with David Eagleman’s writing will encounter the clever analogies that typify his style. Co-author Anthony Brandt, a professor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, ads rich texture and scope to their speculations. It is not obvious what NASA and Picasso have in common. Nor what flamboyant hairstyles, bicycles, or stadium designs share. But the answers seem obvious once the links are pointed out.” ―Richard E. Cytowic, New York Journal of Books "It’s a belter of a book for anyone with an interest in neuroscience, creativity or education... Understanding ourselves and our creativity is a journey that also helps us to understand what makes us human. The Runaway Species not only makes the complex readable, but also opens a fascinating world that exists between predictability and surprise." ―Business Hitchhiker

WHO IT'S FOR: Scientists, writers, inventors, artists, musicians, and eternally curious folks who could use an extra shot of creativityWHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: How do exceptionally creative people -- like Leonardo da Vinci, Bach, Chopin, Einstein, Edison, Picasso, Steve Jobs -- come up with and execute their ideas? What makes the book special are vignettes of the other 200+ artists, scientists, composers and engineers you *haven’t* heard of yet, and all the cool ideas they’ve come up with as they “bend, break and blend” old ideas to create new ones. The book’s fluid writing style and 200 illustrations make for fun, fast reading. Some essential new concepts I learned:• “Skeuomorphs” are “features that imitate the design of what has come before.” Nothing is 100% new.• Every emerging billion-dollar industry is already 10 yrs old• To come up with great ideas, embrace error so you can proliferate lots of options• The 20% Rule: the brain seems to prefer visual stimulus of 20% complexity• The greatest creators (eg Picasso, Edison) were just insanely prolific. The more stuff you make, the more likely that some of it will be great.• Let young minds embrace the arts: “This is because the arts, due to their overtness, are the most accessible way to teach the basic tools of innovation.”WHAT IT’S NOT: Although it can teach you much about the process of innovation, this book’s not a creativity how-to book per se. For that, I recommend Edward de Bono’s classic Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step by Step.WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: The dozens of fascinating stories of perseverance, ingenuity, and breakthrough – e.g. self-healing concrete, carbon-fiber violins, or James Dyson’s 5,127 vacuum prototypes (!) – demystify innovation, humanize it, and just might catalyze a world-changing story of your own.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil, Happiness Engineer, TEDx presenter of "Awaken Creative Genius" and author of Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine

As a musician, writer, business person, and teacher, I couldn't put RUNAWAY down! From the first page to the last, I was captivated. Problem solvers and creatives are always looking for inventive ways to stretch beyond our limits, and for the encouragement to take risks. Historically, how has creativity affected humanity? Where are examples of people using imaginative resourcefulness to take us to places yet discovered? How can we inspire our children and give them permission to be curious, to explore, and to invent? Bravo to you Anthony Brandt and David Eagleman for your diligent research and delightful read!!!

This spring the Alabama School of Math and Science decided we were going to have a book for our entire community to read and discuss in the new school year. This is the book we chose. We are very excited with our choice! Eagleman and Brandt have written a book about creativity which is accessible to adults and teens. It is inspiring, positive and makes you think. We will be using it in the classroom and boardroom. There is something for everyone here to chew on. Their approach to creativity means the playing field is level and open to everyone. And what more could educators want than to have teens believe that the impossible is possible, there are no wrong turns and one should always look at a problem from a myriad of angles. I'm telling you this book is a great place to start a thousand conversations starting with two little words..."What if..."I will also let you know that the customer rep from the publisher (catapult) has been absolutely amazing!

Thanks for sending me this book! There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it came in mint condition and in good time.I ordered this book because it’s the common reading for my university and I wanted to read it so I could relate to the incoming freshman since I’m working Freshman Preview Week. I have no complaints about this, but the book DOES say it’s an advanced copy which might’ve been good to state in the item description. (Sometimes advanced copies haven’t been proofread 👍🏻) I’m excited to get to reading!

A beautiful blend of science and composition; where creativity abounds and helps us understand who we are. I have been a fan of David Eagleman since happening upon his PBS airing of "The Brain," then quickly bought all books that he published. His partnership with Anthony Brandt has made so many science and art pieces of life become so much more accessible. Highly recommended.

This book was an absolutely delightful read! I loved all of the examples, anecdotes, and COLOR pictures throughout the book. They draw from a dizzying array of fields and disciplines to illustrate their point, which is that creativity is a human universal that touches all parts of our lives. They also make a strong case for focusing more intentionally on cultivating creativity in our schools. In the 21st century, this is proving to be an essential skill that we ignore at our peril. Highly recommended read!

Excellent book. I was asked to read it at work and really enjoyed it.The book discuss creativity from both the science and art aspect of it.. This is not a connection often made about but the explanation are clear and easy to understand. The chapter on creativity at work and at school should be mandatory reading

A good read decorated with rich examples from arts and science how creativity worked up to now i highly recommend this book to interested people

And the Sea Is Never Full: Memoirs, 1969-, by Elie Wiesel

Amazon.com Review

And the Sea Is Never Full is Elie Wiesel's memoir of the period between 1969 and the present. Wiesel, an esteemed writer (his Night is among the greatest memoirs of the Holocaust) and political activist, begins the book remembering a challenge given to himself at age 40: "I will become militant. I will teach, share, bear witness. I will reveal and try to mitigate the victims' solitude." He defends dissidents in the Soviet Union; draws attention to the atrocities of Cambodia and Bosnia; and fights apartheid in South Africa. He attacks Holocaust deniers, stands with Lech Walesa in Poland, visits Albania as a representative of President Clinton, and wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel's tragic boyhood compelled him to work very hard to love the world. He has learned to do so, and this memoir, like all of his best writing, teaches its reader to love the world while looking directly at its greatest terrors. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly

This second volume in Wiesel's memoirs (the first was All Rivers Run to the Sea) isAas a memoir by this Jewish novelist, activist and Nobel Peace laureate must beAa moral accounting, of himself and of those he has known. And he spares no one, from Israeli U.N. ambassador Abba Eban to French president Fran?ois Mitterrand, in an honest report on how he believes they have let him down. The tale resumes here with Wiesel's marriage in 1969, at the age of 40, and follows the author through his most active years as a goad to the world's memory (of the Holocaust) and conscience (in the realm of human rights, especially those of Soviet Jewry). The events are often dramatic: one of the book's climaxes comes in 1985, when it was announced that President Reagan would visit Bitburg, a German cemetery where SS members are buried, and Wiesel had to decide whether to receive from Reagan's hands the Congressional Gold Medal. Courageous as ever, he accepted the awardAand used the occasion to speak truth to power, urging Reagan to change his plans for the trip. Wiesel is equally forthright about the political maneuvers and infighting that led him to resign from chairing the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council before its task, building a museum, was even begun. Despite the failings of humanity, which he relates so well, he remains optimistic about the future. Wiesel's writing is as fluid and evocative as ever, and his storytelling skills turn the events of his own life into a powerful series of morality plays. No one who cares about ethical imperatives should miss this book. Photos not seen by PW. (Dec.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Elie Wiesel is a writer I have read and will read gratefully with pleasure for he offers what I understand is the very substance of the meaning of life: his love of words and a conscientious use of them, a deep perception of pain, sorrow and experience, a sense of responsibility towards others together with his faith in a God he loves in spite of his apparent failings, I enjoy his deep appreciation of joy and happiness shared with others as part of Jewish religious rituals.

Love this book very interested

Review

Flocks is one of the most powerful works I’ve read… …It’s remarkable in that it avoids judgement and preachiness in her handling of what are generally perceived as extremely sensitive subjects... ...a searingly honest piece of work. ― Comics Beat(Nichols) brings an instantly apparent, appealing, and accessible intensity of emotion and craft to whatever she’s doing, in whatever vein. ― The Comics JournalThe intimacy of a mini-comic that deals with an issue close to the heart of the author and reader can make for powerful reading… …My own personal experience came later than it did for Nichols, but I can still feel the pain and fear on every page of her comic as though it were my own. ― Panel PatterNichols's incredibly empathetic and humane autobio series about the various groups that have had an impact on their life reaches an almost unbearable point of agony and then resolves in an unexpected but remarkably hopeful way... ...After extending empathy, compassion, understanding and the benefit of the doubt to everyone else, Nichols finally gave it to themself. The joy and radiance in Nichols's line at this point fairly bursts off the page. ― High-Low

Flocks is an amazing visual journey through all the angst of growing up, but somehow finding our way....L. Nichols has an uncanny ability to translate emotions to his drawings, making that reason enough to read Flocks. The book had a nice rhythm that reflects life. Sometimes life is a quagmire that you have to gather yourself to break out of, and sometimes life hits you at the rapid fire pace and you can catch the wave or tumble around in the wash. The book left me with a hopeful feeling for the resiliency of people, and the importance of friends and community, and motivation to check in with all my friends and reminisce.

I don't think I've read anything before that so nicely combined the themes of:- needing to get away from a restrictive community to figure out how to live a good life- needing the strength and support from that community to learn and achieveLife isn't simple, it's complicated. This book is a quick read and helps you understand how one person navigated life's complexity.

Logan’s creativity and genius shines through in Flocks. I read it within an hour and came away with a “wow” moment. The art is highly impressive and depicts his journey very thoroughly. Well done Logan.

*** Trigger warning for homophobia, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders. **L. Nichols was born in Louisiana (some time in the mid-to-late-1970s, if the rad TMNT reference is any indication!) and assigned female (“Laura”) at birth. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist community, L. always felt different; an outcast, a freak, a sinner.Throughout his childhood and teen years, L. tried to suppress his attraction to girls – and was further confounded by the occasional crushes he developed on boys. While he enjoyed some parts of the church experience – the emphasis on faith, the sense of fellowship, and the feeling that there are things bigger than oneself – his church’s virulent homophobia and adherence to rigid gender roles alienated L. and led to isolation, depression, and self-harm.But whereas L.’s community failed him on one front, it succeeded on another: despite his being labeled “female,” L.’s family and teachers encouraged him to pursue his love of science and technology, culminating in a Master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab. It was during his college years that L. pinpointed the reason for the animosity he felt toward his body, and decided to transition.FLOCKS is L.’s memoir, told in graphic novel format. The vehicle through which L. chooses to tell his story perfectly encapsulates the many contradictions in his life: while STEM majors aren’t typically considered artsy or creative, L. is indeed a talented artist. His sad little rag doll depiction of himself is at once whimsical and rather heartbreaking (doubly so when we witness stuffing fall out of self-inflicted cuts on his legs). Given all he’s been through, L.’s upbeat, optimistic attitude is downright uplifting. (And I typically consider myself an Oscar the Grouch type, so that’s quite a compliment coming from my neck of the dump.)While the main thrust of the story is L.’s burgeoning sexuality and exploration of his gender identity, he tackles a number of other serious topics as well: his parents’ acrimonious divorce; the pressure of choosing a major and settling on a career path, post-graduation; polyamory; eating disorders; self-harm; depression; binge drinking; an appreciation of nature and the natural world; and the impact of community and in-group/out-group identity on one’s sense of self. It’s an engaging, beautiful story, in both form and content. There’s a little bit of repetition of themes and ideas early on (and not between chapters, i.e. to string them together, but within the same chapters), which does detract from the story. Even so, it’s a must-read, and not just because it’s more or less a one of a kind story, at least at this point in time. (Dear publishers, please give us more of this! Kay thanks bye.)

What I found to be the standout of this graphic novel was the author's repetition of showing us their interpretation of the unseen feelings they experienced through life. Its a very well illustrated book and the writing is very personal. An excellent queer memoir throughout, I hope this story reaches many.
