Review

“If you want to handle your repetitive strain injury, today is your lucky day. It is simple to apply Valerie DeLaune’s suggestions to your aching body. At the same time, this book is profound enough to teach an old dog like me a bunch of new tricks. If more people read and applied what is in this book, there would be fewer doctor visits and the world would be a happier place. Congratulations on your choice in reading this book and enjoy being pain-free.” —Steven Lavitan, chiropractor, acupuncturist, nutritionist, and writer in Teaneck, NJ “DeLaune has written a wonderful and comprehensive self-care book for upper limb and repetitive strain injuries. With easy-to-use self-diagnostic tools, treatment options, and helpful information on the prevention of musculoskeletal pain, this valuable resource is a must for everyone’s medicine cabinet.” —Wendy Larson, MSPT, physical therapist and owner of Centre Point Physical Therapy in Portland, OR “DeLaune adds another important pillar to the understanding of how ‘just a muscle problem’ can cause the pain and dysfunction we are taught to deal with or medicate. In this book, a reader/pain patient will experience a comprehensive approach to the self-treatment of myofascial pain caused by trigger points. This means that it addresses all the other considerations, including the ones surrounding the lives of chronic pain patients, which are most commonly overlooked, and offers simple-to-perform self-treatment approaches and techniques.” —Jeffrey A. Lutz LMT, CMTPT, president of the National Association of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists (NAMTPT)

Great book and book series. A lot of very useful info for both the average person and the professional bodyworker.

For a massage therapist, this is a must-have resource to prevent upper body work strains from becoming chronic problems. May be a bit too technical for the DIY user, though.

Perfect!!!

Excellent, very helpful.

The book is thorough and very well laid out with photographs indicating each pain area and what trigger points may be involved as well as clear instructions for working the points. Definitely useful for self help.

Designed for clinician-therapist, it was of littlevalue to me. I would not recommend thepurchase of this book as a self-help tool.

This is a darkly funny and violent story in which Jay Stringer creates a number of disparate characters, sets them largely at odds against each other, and then steps back and watches while they attempt to somehow find their way out of the mess he’s left them in.As the story opens, two killers set upon a drunken man named Mackie, catching him in a whorehouse at the most indelicate of moments. They shoot him in the leg, but Mackie manages to escape and makes his way to his Uncle Rab’s. Rab Anderson is a gangster-turned-author and when Mackie arrives at his home, he discovers that Uncle Rab is nowhere to be found. Worse, Uncle Rab’s dog has been killed, suggesting that things are going downhill in a big hurry, both for Mackie and for his uncle.Sam Ireland is a female P.I. who has taken over her father’s one-man shop. Dad’s in the nursing home and his memory wanders in and out. Mostly it’s out and while Sam would like to fill the old man’s shoes and make him proud, it would sure as hell help if all his secrets weren’t locked away in a mind that’s only occasionally open for business.A firm of mysterious but apparently very well-to-do lawyers hires Sam to track down Mackie’s Uncle Rab and deliver some legal documents to him. The lawyers hint that this is a test case and if Sam does well, there may be a lot of profitable business headed her way. This is Sam’s big chance and she wants to make the most of it. But the search for Rab takes her into some very sleazy places and antagonizes some very nasty people. And the closer she gets to finding Rab, the more likely it is that this will not only be her biggest case, but also her last.Detective Inspector Andy Lambert is a cop with some very scary friends and relations. He’s hip deep in the whole Rab Anderson situation and with both Mackie and Sam attempting to find the elusive uncle, Andy’s life is also getting a lot more complicated and dangerous. His personal life is at a critical point as well and he’s going to have to maneuver very carefully if the house of cards he’s created is not going to come tumbling down around him.All of the action takes place in the seamy underside of Glasgow. There are some great dive bars and other such establishments here and a cast of warped but very interesting characters, many of whom have deep secrets that they do not want exposed. Stringer heightens the tension from start to finish by turning from one character to the next and by rapid shifts from one scene to another. It’s a gripping story, outrageous (in a very good way), with some nasty humor as well. Mackie, in particular, is a character with an interesting world view—a guy you’d like to have a beer with sometime when he wasn’t leaking blood all over the place and being pursued by guys you’d rather not have a beer or anything else to do with. All in all, Ways to Die in Glasgow is a great noir-ish read that will appeal to large numbers of readers who enjoy their crime fiction a bit on the quirky side.

This had a good plot and good set of main characters. There were too many secondary characters who weren't fleshed out as well, and it got hard to follow who was who, who was with each faction. My main complaint though, was a main character just fading out of the story.MINOR SPOILER ALERTThe story starts with Mackie trying to understand why he's been shot. For the rest of the book, he stomps around on the periphery of the main action trying to find out what's going on before disappearing from the third act altogether. Even though the resolution includes a revelation that's life changing for him, we don't see him finding out about it or learning how it impacts him.

I am retired, so I have the time and inclination to read a lot of ebooks. My preferred genre is espionage and thrillers, but I often stray to crime fighters and justice seekers, such as Jack Reacher. But as an American, I also find it outside-the-box to read UK writers of gritty and unusual crime fiction. Thank goodness I "discovered" Jay Stringer's books in that genre. What a writer! He is funny, serious, sorta crazy, very regional-centric in language and culture, and downright entertaining. Whether it is the wild Eoin Miller series, or this wonderful Glasgow tale, this writer just cannot miss.Read this book!

Enjoyed the flipping around of the dialogue from each character, though, at the beginning, I could've sworn it was Sam who was with Jenny T! All in all, good pace in the character development. Not tedious to get to know what was important about them and kept me engaged, fully, all the way to the end.

Not a bad read for a cold rainy afternoon.A cold case type story that develops through two avenues, the experiences of a private detective (whose father was in turn a police detective), the other a low level street kid criminal. The dialogue isn't spectacular, but the story moves at a pace to reach a "case solved" conclusion with a suitable amount of carnage and death on the way and the final bloody scene. Not a bad read.

Phil is awesome, especially when he answers a door. Love all the characters actually, and Glasgow comes out as a great character too which I love (although I feel I need a map while I, an American, reads all the place names). Reminds me a little of my favorite author, Elmore Leonard. Read it.

Strong female characters, plenty of villainy, surprises and chaos. Very enjoyable, read it very fast. Totally recommend it. Must read.

I loved it! This is a fast pulpy trip through Glasgow from several different character perspectives, all of them circling the drain. It was a lot of fun, if you think fun involves many, many beatings. Jay's really onto something here with this one. Kudos. I was especially a fan of "Mackie," as being in his mind for awhile is like being in a blender with no long-term memory. Brilliant.
