From Booklist
Reviewed with Cheri J. Meiners' Share and Take Turns.PreS-Gr. 1. From the Learning to Get Along series, these colorful books encourage children to learn social skills. In Listen an African American boy explains what listening means: keeping quiet, watching the person who talks, thinking about what is being said, and asking questions when he doesn't understand. He also talks about using those skills in the classroom and at home. Similarly, in Share a red-haired girl learns techniques for sharing, then shows how she shares and takes turns when playing at home with her sister and friends. Each book ends with the child feeling good about using his or her new skills. The bright line-and-wash illustrations feature multiracial groups of children engaged in familiar activities. The writing is purposeful, but it is also practical in approach and sensitive to the problems and feelings of young children. A good choice for teachers seeking books that reinforce familiar classroom messages. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is the second book in the Learning to Get Along series that we have purchased for my son. He's four and recently started preschool. Before now, he's never been in any sort of daycare facility, since I work from home. We expected him to be excited about preschool and to mind as well as he does at home. Boy, were we in for a rude awakening. Everything went downhill after the first day. We got reports from his teacher that he was crying, whining, hitting other children, refusing to participate and even hit his teacher at one point. This was such a far cry from the sweet, loving child I knew at home that my first reaction was to blame the teacher. That's terrible, I know, but he had never acted this way before. After some consideration and a meeting with his teacher, I was finally able to accept that the problem was my boy was having difficulty adjusting to a social setting after spending so much time at home, with me.I stumbled upon the Learning to Get Along series of books by accident and I couldn't be happier. We started out with Know and Follow Rules and were so impressed by the changes in my son that I immediately bought Listen and Learn. He studied the illustrations carefully, including the look on the children's faces while I read it to him and pointed out what the children were doing (like sitting quietly in a group, focusing on the task at hand, not yelling). I think he had such a difficult time at first because he honestly didn't understand what was expected of him. This book helped to show him how to act in school. It hasn't changed him overnight, but there have been definite improvements. I can use examples from the book to help him understand why he's getting in trouble at school and to help redirect his behavior. There are also several pages in the pack for parents. Suggestions on how to explain the contents in the book to your children, games that will help them learn and different strategies to help them follow rules. It still takes work, but I couldn't be happier with this book, or the others we've purchased in the series.
I've purchased several of these books. Since teaching kids is all about repeating things, I thought reinforcing lessons like this at story time would be helpful. As a parent, I don't know what you're looking for out of this book. A moral lesson? A teaching moment? A magic cure for bad behavior? If it's the latter, it's not in this book. However, the fact that you're looking for a book to help your kid says a lot about your character as a parent, in my opinion. My kid has severe ADHD and needs social boundaries and rules repeated over and over for them to sink in (even more than the average kid already does). We even did PCIT together last summer to prepare him better for the classroom. If you have a kid with behavior/learning issues, I highly recommend these. He identified with the kids in the books, they are cartoon-like yet realistic, and the kids respond how real kids do in classroom situations. We read 3 books at bedtime and most nights I include a behavior/lesson book like this. They even have great sections in the back on how to talk to your kids about the lessons in the book.
My son is 3 1/2 and was having a hard time listening at school and at home. I found this book on amazon. He wanted to read this every night for like two weeks and boy did it make a difference! He started getting great reports from his teachers and we noticed a difference. I ended up buying every book in this series. They are by far his favorite books and mine.
So simply and intentionally written AND our 4 year old likes the stories, understands the lessons and even applies the concepts! Five stars for practical and effective parenting help!
I got this book base on the rewiews, but I'm disappointed... It's a great book parents or teachers can use to prepare kids for classrooms expectations. There is only two pages about listening at home "At home, I listen and talk with my family. We talk about our day. We make plans. We solve problems. We learn together. We show we are talking and listening."
I love all of Meiners' books. They are very useful for teaching and shaping up various social and behavioral skills. I use them with my students as a special education teacher, and with my own little ones as a mother.
These books are great for teaching social skills to preschool and kindergarten! perfect amount of words on each page. Love the pictures and graphics. Very well done!!
Used this for my Aspergers child. He was completely drawn to the facial expressions in the book. Had to adapt the story line a bit to fit his particular situation but easy to do with the illustrations. Very pleased with this as we have to be very literal with Aspergers kids - everything is so literal and this help explain to them the consequences of their actions.
