The authors not only compiled historical and modern uses of hara diagnosis (abdominal palpation) in the field of East Asian medicine, but also attempted a compilation of historical and modern literatures in an effort to explain how and why Japanese practitioners have placed such a strong emphasis on hara diagnosis. After introducing the historical literature, the text examines the several important concepts and models that are found in the early literature. In particular the internal pathways of the extraordinary vessels are discussed in detail. Mental and emotional correspondences and concepts in East Asian medicine are also discussed. The source theories of the Ling Shu and especially the Nan Jing are described in some detail. The concepts of the moving qi between the kidneys and the triple burner are described at great length, and in more detail than in most other books. Historical ideas about the anatomical basis of the triple burner and the channel systems, and speculations about the embryological development of these systems are also described. Modern anatomical correlates are postulated, examining the possible anatomical basis of the channel systems, extraordinary vessels, triple burner and moving qi between the kidneys, including detailed discussions about possible embryological correlations. Although speculative in nature, these discussions compile a wide and very interesting variety of theories that can extend our understanding of acupuncture. The clinical chapters of the text describe basic methods of examining the hara, the various palpatory findings and their general interpretations. This is followed by a large chapter on abdominal shiatsu, and a compilation of traditional Japanese massage methods. The use of hara diagnosis in meridian therapy and especially in the work of Dr. Yoshio Manaka are detailed. The last two chapters extend Manaka's ideas compiling a variety of clinically useful ideas and methods including the system of open points. These chapters on the work of Manaka serve as a good introduction to the use of ion-pumping cords, and Manaka's general treatment approach.

"The House of Djinn" brings to a close the trilogy begun in "Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind", a Newbery Honor Book. I found all three books a fascinating glimpse into a culture and world that was totally unfamiliar to me. Although the books are fiction, the author states that the stories are based on actual interviews with women from the Pakistan region. "The House of Djinn" tells the story of Shabanu's daughter "Muti" as ancient traditions collide with modern ideas regarding a woman's role. One is left hanging about Shabanu's future, but there is hope that this independent, resourceful "daughter of the wind" will make her own way to happiness, as she always has.I would recommend this book for young people as well as adults. The story is well told and moves along at a fast clip.
A very magic realism-esque take on the dichotomy of being Pakistani and American. I like Mumtaz as a character more than shabanu, as she seems somehow more grounded. The whole Chloe plotline was very heavy handed tho, and detracted from the overall plot.
When reading this book, I felt as if its relation to the first book in the trilogy (the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu") was something like the relationship of "Scarlett" to "Gone With the Wind." Whereas the first two (wonderful!) books focus on Shabanu and the intricacies of life in Pakistan and Pakistani society, "The House of Djinn" bounces its focus to Mumtaz and the heretofore unknown Jameel, while Shabanu herself appears barely twice. While the first two books are rich with detail on the landscape, cities, rituals, and intrigue, this book jumps clumsily from scene to scene, name-dropping skateboard tricks.I remember being left on the edge of my seat when "Haveli" ended, and after growing impatient with years of waiting for a resolution, visiting the author's website and discovering that she had never planned to write a third book at all. This felt akin to Tolkien's simply ending his books at the Two Towers with "Frodo was alive, and taken by the enemy." I was horrified. I couldn't have been happier when she decided to write this book to resolve those missing questions. Alas, the book is so rushed and thin on detail that it's almost as if it was written by someone else. It does NOT read like the grandchild of the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu." I didn't connect with a single character in the book, even the ones I'd liked before. I'm bitterly disappointed...she resolved the issues only technically, as if saying "here's your book, now leave me alone."A final thought: this is the fourth book I've read by Suzanne Fisher Staples, and I've come to notice that every single one of them (the Shabanu trilogy and "Shiva's Fire") seem to end right in the middle of the climax. While open endings are appropriate for some stories, after a while it starts to feel lazy. Finishing her books with no sense of closure is jarring.Enjoy "Shabanu" and "Haveli," but stop there.
Shabanu and Haveli have had far more effort and time devoted to storytelling than this book.This was a disappointment.
This is the third book in this trilogy. It's story about life in Pakistan as a young girl in a traditional household is disturbing with undertones of hope for the future. It's not an easy read but is well worth it.
The original book is better; however you feel for the situation of young people from different cultures who are raised in America.
Beautiful. Shabanu, Haveli, and now The House of Djinn. Absolutely beautiful. Each one transports you. I couldn't put this book down and ended up reading it straight through. Strongly recommend this book.

I purchased Prague Self-Guided Walks: Old Town (Kindle Version) in 2015 as my wife and I were preparing for our first visit to Prague. As I studied it, the detailed descriptions enabled me to take a "virtual tour" before we arrived. On our first day in Prague, we took a live tour which was difficult to absorb at the guide's breakneck pace. The next day we returned to Old Town with my cell phone and Kindle app in hand. As we began our self-guided walk, I realized how much better our experience was compared to the live tour. We could proceed at a leisurely pace and the directions were easy to follow, with a level of detail that allowed us to discover and explore to our hearts' content. After a while we felt like kids on a treasure hunt! The author's love for her adopted city shone through in her narrative and she pointed out historical gems that we might have missed with a live guide. I highly recommend this book. In fact we are returning to Prague in September 2016 and my wife and I look forward to exploring the Lesser Quarter with Kristi Bryce's guide.
Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic, Deco, Art Nouveau, Art Deco....all sounds "Greek" to me. When I have friends visit Prague while I'm doing a longer-term stay there, I reach for this guide and its companion books to show them around and act like a true Renaissance Man around town. The walking maps are well laid out and efficiently cover the interesting sights and provide succinct background and description. In foodie talk...more in line with my special interests (especially, Czech beer) ;-)...if you "pair" these guides with the author's Prague Restaurant Guide, first-time and repeat visitors will have a deeper and richer sense of the city and its past and present character.
Perfect. This book allowed me to make a wonderfully informative self-guided tour of old Prague. If you're going for the first time and have an interest in architecture, history, and art, I highly recommend taking a copy of this little book along and following the route it recommends through the city. Well worth the money.
When I get to a new city I like to do a walk around to see the major sites, get acquainted with the neighborhood and, hopefully, find some hidden treats. This is the perfect guide book for doing this!Krysti leads you through the Old Town pointing out all the significant sights with the historical significance of each. Then she adds in hidden alleys, some wonderful interiors that we would have missed and some of the quirky outdoor art that studs Prague.Krysti' s knowledge of Prague' s history, architecture and food is extensive and enriches this walk. Highly recommended!As the other reviewers have said, as good as this book is, the very best thing is to treat yourself to a personal tour guided by Krysti Brice!
Consistent with her other self-guided walks, we found the book to be well done. It felt as if Krysti were right there with us. Her instructions on where to turn and what to look for were precise and the level of detail was very appropriate for a walking tour. I would highly recommend the book.
Last summer my family and I were priviledged to visit Prague and spend time with Krysti Brice. She is so knowledgeable about the city and took us to many of the places mentioned in this booklet. Her guidebook has much more information on places to see and eat and things to do. I was interested in reading more about the history of the sites we had visited in Old Town, so I bought this version for my Kindle. I love the pictures! She posts many pictures of the city on her Facebook page and on her website exclusivepraguetours.com. If you are planning a visit to Prague, be sure to contact Krysti and arrange for her to show you around!
I will probably review it better after using this book in Prague. Right now I disappointed in quality of maps-- you need a magnifying glass to be able to see where to go...
We were recommended to Krysti by the author of another Prague guide book. We hired her as a private guide to explore Kutna Hora. Before our trip she also suggested we check out her self-guided walks. We purchased the Old Town and Lesser Quarter self-guided walking tours and were quite pleased with both.I guess it's a personal preference thing, but the amount of detail was just right. The instructions were easy to follow and the highlighted items were all worth seeing. If you're in town for more than a day or two you'd probably want to get into more detail, but if you're looking for a nice way to see the major highlights on foot with minimal stress I'd say this is a great way to do it.Separate from the book she was also a great private tour guide.

It was as described, but pay close attention to those dimensions. It was smaller than I thought it would be. Only after I got it and grabbed a ruler did I realize that the BCP I had as a gift from years ago is now called the "enlarged" edition (though it's still only the size of a smallish Bible). This "standard" size is quite small, pocket-size I'd say.Leather binding feels nice in the hand, and the font and new typesetting is clearer.
This is the most beautiful edition of the classic 1662 Book of Common Prayer I've ever had the pleasure to use. Before we get to the substance of the review, a brief prefatory note might be helpful: if you worship in an Anglican / Episcopalian church either in the US or in the UK, it's unlikely that this is the edition of the prayer book being used in your church. In the US most Episcopal churches appear to be using the 1979 edition of the US Prayer Book, while traditionalist parishes and many Anglican parishes use the 1928 US edition. Meanwhile in the UK most churches are using either the new Common Worship books, a version of the Roman rite, or services created locally. It seems that if you want to experience a true 1662 service these days you either need to attend a sparsely populated 8am or midweek communion service, or be very lucky in where you live.And that's a shame, as you'd find out very quickly if you read / used this book. Even before we consider it as a prayer book, it's worth reflecting on the fact that many generations have considered it a masterpiece of English *literature*. The language, shaped by the confluence of it's Latin forebears, the enlivening influence of Tyndale's translations of Scripture, and the genius of Thomas Cranmer, is vivacious and memorable. It warns us of the "devices and desires of our own hearts", which we confess "meekly kneeling upon [our] knees". Couples coming to be joined in the "holy estate [which] Christ adorned and beautified with his presence" (marriage) are warned not to "satisfy [their] carnal lusts and appetites, like brute beasts that have no understanding," are instead exhorted to love one another as Christ loves the Church, "loving and cherishing it even as his own flesh." The examples could be multiplied endlessly - but perhaps you get the point. The words leave a delightful taste in the mouth long after you've finished pronouncing them.And this is a beautiful edition of the book. It's traditional look belies the fact that Cambridge took an old edition and completely reset it digitally - somewhat similarly to a studio digitally remastering an old movie or music recording. The result is an attractively laid out text which has gravity and dignity, but which is also crisp and clear, so easy to read. The point size is generous for such a small volume (except the prefaces), and would be easily readable by most folks (and if you need large type, Cambridge do an large-print edition too:BCP Enlarged Edition Black French Morocco CP423. The French Morocco leather of this pocket edition is durable but so pleasant to hold. There is gilding around the page edges, which just adds to the attractive feel of the volume. And it's made to last - I've had my copy for perhaps a couple of years now, and it's regularly used, and yet it's showing very little sign of wear and tear. It should last me the rest of my life, and then still be good enough to pass along to another generation.But it's not just a book to admire, either for it's quality production or its turns of phrase. It's a book to be *prayed*. And it serves this purpose admirably too. If you've never used a liturgical prayer book before it may take a little getting used to, but it's certainly easier to navigate than most other liturgical texts - part of Cranmer's genius. If you spend a few minutes with the contents page and the calendar, you should be able to work out pretty quickly everything you need to know to get started with Morning and Evening Prayer - and there are a multitude of online sites that can help. It will encourage you to establish or maintain a pattern of regular, daily prayer which can sustain you for a lifetime, as generations of past Christians can testify. The slightly archaic language may trip you up once or twice, but won't present much of a barrier - it's no harder than Shakespeare, for example (easier in most parts of the book).Highly recommended.
A very nice edition of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Although small in size, the 9 point type is very readable, and its small footprint makes it a very portable Prayer Book, suitable for use at home as well as church (should you be blessed enough to attend a parish using this, the gold standard of BCP editions). It can easily fit into a coat pocket and is very comfortable in the hand. The binding is more utilitarian than beautiful, but by no means unlovely, and makes for a sturdy prayer-book that travels well should need or want require.Although, as previously mentioned above, it is very readable, I would probably invest in the Enlarged Edition in leather, as the size is not much greater, and the leather bindings from Cambridge have a more personal feel to them.The 1662 Book of Common Prayer is important both from a literary standpoint as well as historical, liturgical and spiritual standpoints. Familiarity with the Prayer Book will enhance the enjoyment of nineteenth century literature as well as providing a Regula and devotional resource for traditional Christians. Every Anglican should have this prayer-book, and every Christian can benefit from its reading and use.

This book can be used as the textbook for a New Testament survey course at the graduate or seminary level. David DeSilva provides a wealth of historical, cultural and literary background information to help us understand the 1st century message of each book in the New Testament. He helps us to think about the pastoral motivation behind each gospel and letter in the New Testament. What audience were these gospels/letters written to and what were the pastoral needs of that audience. These concerns helped shape the contents of each book that makes up our present New Testament. In addition DeSilva provides an easy to understand introduction to source criticism, redaction criticism, literary criticism, feminist criticism and many other tools of scholarship that help us understand the New Testament. I highly recommend this introduction to the New Testament.
I've had the great pleasure of being one of Dr. deSilva's students at Ashland Seminary and the somewhat lesser pleasure of having read nearly every chapter in this book in the process. The main weakness in this book is in the editing. The writing could be more concise and clear in many places. This makes it difficult to read from cover to cover, but presents less of a problem when using the book as a reference. It almost seems as if each chapter was written to stand on its own. Many of the same points are made repeatedly throughout the book as they apply to different books of the New Testament. That said, the book also has many strengths.At the end of each chapter is a section on "ministry formation" which draws practical lessons for ministry and discipleship based on the previous reading. I found these to be very insightful and the most interesting and valuable parts of the book. The "exegetical skill" and "cultural awareness" sections that are sprinkled throughout the book are also very good. Separating the exegetical skill material from the main text makes it easy to find and apply to study of parts of the NT other than the immediate context in which the particular sections appear.Overall this book is very good seminary level course and reference material that I know will be very useful to me in the future. It's a poor substitute for the lively and highly interactive teaching that you would get in one of the author's classes, but it's a lot less expensive.
DeSilva kept me hooked as I read through the New Testament letters. This text has been recommended now a few times to some of the guys around my church. As a pastor / teacher, and seminary student with an undergrad in Religion, I've compiled a few NT books and commentaries, and so far this has been at the top of the list. It's not a commentary, but is inviting in its approach to bring the reader into the setting, history, and in-depth context of each book. Certainly a worthy investment, in my opinion, to have in your study library.
Oh, I have used this for so many bible study references, its a great resource book to have.Purchased for NT class and glad the instructor insisted we buy, could not have made it through class without it.
Truly a testament to biblical scholarship. As a scholar of OT, this volume pulled me in and made connection I never even knew were there. If you're looking for a definitive guide to the NT look no further.
Let me begin by saying that I am enjoying the content of this book, but I am struggling with the digital format. While reading on a kindle/kindle app, the two-column text is tiny and very difficult to read. Further, if you zoom in too far, the text get pixelated. (I think they just saved the book as a PDF and uploaded it.)Conclusion: buy the physical version of the book.
