Useful, clearer than most, takes you all the way through instead of assuming you already know things or have access to supplies. Great for our extra-wide horses' heads. Has also taught me enough to make emergency (but still safe) substitutes if bridle or halter breaks at an inconvenient place or time (and when don't they?)
It is a pretty fun and interesting book. Its got some wisdom behind it, good book for the less rustic and non modern cowboy. Basic stuff, not technical but real information. Most of it I already knew, but still enjoyed it. It has some pretty cool projects and pointers on how to do. I though the guy did a pretty good job putting it together.
If you ever wanted to make your own cowboy gear, this is a great book to get you started.Amazing hand drawn illustrations takes out the guess work. Helpful hints, so you can avoid time consuming mistakes. Most of the items needed are already in your home or garage, even if you do not own a horse.Great book report possibility, for a youngster that has to do a speech presentation...they can make one of the items in the book for show and tell.

Beautifully illustrated book about the rise of the third reich and the many attempts on Adolph Hitler’s life. The content is good, truthful and might be a good offering to young teens so they can begin to wrap their minds around our worlds sordid past. The illustrations are amazing. The two/three color pallet was perfection! I adore this book. My only complaint is the authors notes at the end seemingly trying to compare President Trump to Hitler. It’s tiresome and untrue. I urge him to pay attention to the facts. To simply pretend they don’t exist is not only arrogant but ignorant.
Bonhoeffer is one of those subjects that I am continually fascinated by. I have read a number of books by and about Bonhoeffer including two others this year. I did not walk into The Faithful Spy blind.Even though I know it isn’t necessarily true, I tend to think of graphic novels as oriented toward young adult readers. In other words, a simplified perspective. But like Hendrix’s book on John Brown, the presentation of Bonhoeffer is complex.Despite my long reading list about Bonhoeffer, I honestly, think that The Faithful Spy may have more clearly laid out how Hitler rose to power than any other book on Bonhoeffer that I have read. (Or at the least, I actually understood it this time.) Because Hitler has been talked about a lot lately I was paying attention to how The Faithful Spy told the story of Hitler’s rise. A meme on Facebook recently was talking about Hitler being voted into power, but as Faithful Spy makes clear, that is a partial truth. Hitler was elected, but only after he had stolen power and circumvented the democratic process that was in place.As with any graphic novel, the art plays a significant role. There is a lot more text than many graphic novels. This is not a comic book with a number of frames per page. This is mostly text (often a couple hundred words per page) with illustrations and font changes for emphasis and direction. I am not an expert on graphic novel art, but I enjoyed this. Hand drawn letters are never going to be as easy to read as machine print, but this was pretty clear.I am glad I got the hardcover version of this. That made it easier to read and fully enjoy multi-page layouts. And once I was done, I passed it on to a friend that I often exchange books.The focus of the book is Hitler’s rise to power along with Bonheffer’s basic story. Because of that focus there are things like the Barmen Declaration where The Faithful Spy hints a larger role for Bonhoeffer than he really had. Bonhoeffer was important, but he was not central in the Confessing Church.I was pleased that the Faithful Spy did make space for the role of the Black Church played in helping Bonhoeffer reconceive of the role of the church. Several books I have read on Bonhoeffer do not seem to understand how important the year in NYC studying at Union Seminary, but more important attending Abyssinian Baptist Church was to how Bonhoeffer understood the church’s role of faithful witness during persecution.Obviously, a graphic novel is not going to replace a full biography. For that, I still recommend either Charles Marsh’s Strange Glory or Schlingersiepen’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906-1945. But this is a good introduction if you do not know a lot about Bonhoeffer and this is a good introduction to the rise of Hitler and how at least some Christians historically have understood the role of violence on behalf of Christian belief.
This book! I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about The Faithful Spy since I finished it. It’s an exceptional piece of work. A graphic novel(but not) that tells the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer(and others) and his part in the plot to kill Hitler. It also gives you a clear picture on how Hitler came to power. The artwork itself sucks you right in and never feels overwhelming. If you are a history fan, an art fan, or someone who wants to read about a person who made choices for the greater good against such evil read this book! It is beautifully written, engaging, and a reminder of what good can do. Since closing the book I have so many thoughts still going through my head. Have a box of tissues nearby. My 14-year-old and 11-year-old will be reading this book.
As a fan of John Hendrix's work, a follower of Christ, and someone interested in Bonhoeffer's life, I was thrilled when I found out this book was being made. Months later, when I finally had my hands on it, my expectations were exceeded. I love learning about history, but as a busy mom, I don't currently have interest in long novels or biographies. I'm an artist and visual learner so having the expertly-edited text paired with John's powerful art helped me to really appreciate what I didn't learn about WWII and what I can continue to learn from history and Bonhoeffer's life and death.I would recommend this book to anybody over 12 years old. Especially Jr./High school students who might seem less interested in learning about WWII or are bit reluctant to read historical/non-fic novels on their own. The art and title are a great hook, and the way the author so concisely described Hitler's rise to power could keep the reader from losing interest.Another reviewer commented on the author's note in the back, saying it was "seemingly trying to compare President Trump to Hitler." I would like to add that I wondered that myself, too, even though Trump was not named, but, to use that comparison perhaps misses the point of what Bonhoeffer stood and died for. After thinking about the contemporary world leaders some like to compare to Hitler, I continued on to ponder the condition of my own heart. I believe the author's intent was not to vilify current world leaders but to caution each reader and society as a whole not to forget the lessons we should be learning from history. Bonhoeffer stood for Christ, and Christ is way bigger than any president, king or dictator. We can choose the way of Christ, or the way of the world. I'm far from perfect, so I'll keep aiming to choose the way of Christ.Mr. Hendrix, Thanks for putting this book out into the world.
I love this story of one of the most inspiring Christian heroes of modern history. Maybe a little in depth for my 8 year old, but he will grow into it ;)The tri-color theme is beautiful and adds some major intensity to the feel of the book.
A friend told me about this book and I went ahead and ordered it for my kids to read - of course, I planned to read it as well. I really enjoyed it and finished it over the course of a day. My 10 year old daughter is currently working her way through it.The visuals are great and it’s nice to have an intro into these great and horrible events that is understandable and appropriate for young children. While they get a general idea of this era in school, this a great supplement that is very personal and focused.

About the Author
David Luke is now Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience, and is also guest lecturer on the MSc in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness Studies at the University of Northampton. I am not a physicist. I wouldn’t know a Higgs field from Wrigley Field. But after a college course in the history of science, I became fascinated with the subject. As a result, I have read a lot of books written by scientists who have made an effort to explain complex scientific theories – particularly in physics -- in layman’s terms. What those books often leave out, however, is the human element. Scientific discoveries are made by people, obviously, and the people who make them seldom do so in cold, clinical, ivory tower isolation. Rather, they do so in a sometimes collaborative, often competitive environment with other scientists -- not only their colleagues down the hall, but others halfway around the world. They also make these discoveries in the course of living their own lives, pursuing friendships and romances, having families, struggling with political, financial and health issues, and otherwise contending with the messy stuff of life. And these breakthroughs do not come easy – these scientists find their way to them only after many false starts and much time and effort in blind alleys, often while enduring much criticism from colleagues and competitors.Scientific biographies, on the other hand, often tend to focus on the lives of their subjects while making little effort to describe and explain the details of their scientific ideas and discoveries. This is, I suppose, to be expected, since such biographies are seldom written by physicists who fully understand, and thus can effectively convey, those highly complex ideas to non-scientist readers. A happy medium, for me, would be a book that explores both the personal and the scientific dimensions of these breakthroughs in the realm of physics. And here is where The Quantum Labyrinth shines.The author, Paul Halpern, is a physicist. Happily, he has a gift for explaining complex, often purely mathematical concepts in physics – including the bizarre and non-intuitive behavior of matter at the sub-atomic scale described by the theory of quantum mechanics -- in a way which is engaging and, at least in my case, somewhat understandable. But he presents those explanations in both their historical context, as well as in the context of the personal lives and relationships of the people who developed them. His primary subjects are two of the greatest minds of 20th century physics – Richard Feynman and John Archibald Wheeler – whose friendship began when Feynman began his graduate work at Princeton and was assigned to be Wheeler’s teaching assistant. The book explores their unique personalities as well as the development of their scientific ideas -- and their friendship – over the course of many eventful decades.But it doesn’t stop with Feynman and Wheeler; it includes many fascinating glimpses into their collaborations -- and their conflicts -- with other great physicists of their time, and shows how the newly emerging understanding of quantum mechanics – as well as many other breakthroughs – developed along many different pathways through the 20th century as a result of these collaborations. Although many biographies have been written about both subjects of this book i.e. Feynman and Wheeler, this one is unique. I have read biographies of both but bringing them together plus a host of other physicists that helped (including Kip S. Thorne who won this year's Noble prize) was valuable to me. The author is a professional physicist and this helped me understand how Feynman and Wheeler working together with a host of other physicist solved many of the problems during the early days. Engrossing!

So, I always appreciate a book that appeals to my non-doctoral mind. This book satisfied the itchy sweater in my brain that wants to know what it wants to know. Paul Halpern has a way of explaining physics so that bar-stool physicists like myself get it. He also has a way of telling a great story. This book tells a beautiful story about two great physicists, covers a great deal of research about Feynman and Wheeler, and makes physics understandable. It really upped my intellectual game at the pub.
For those who are not professional physicists, the science parts of this book will be a challenge since understanding quantum mechanics and its development is difficult for even the greatest physicists. Recall Niels Bohr's statement: "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it." But the story of how Feynman and Wheeler pursued a more complete understanding of the quantum in relation to Einstein's theory of relativity wonderfully shows how these two fundamentally different intellects work together to advance our understanding of both the quantum and relativity. For me as a non-scientist, the human story of how Feynman and Wheeler worked together and separately to advance science knowledge makes this book gripping and rewarding reading.
This was a fascinating look at the biographies and accomplishments of two of the most important figures in modern physics. The author's attempts to explain the technical material, while not always entirely comprehensible to me, were admirable.

It's as if she knows what's going on in my head. Of course, it's not to overgeneralize...yet at the same time, this book is something I feel is necessary for me right now.As I mentioned in the title, it touches a VERY sensitive part of the heart.I don't want to even look at it, I don't want to deal with it, and I don't want to keep crying when I think about it.At the same time, this book will politely beckon me to do so - so I can face it, deal with it, and accept it.I highly recommend for those who experience challenging, almost destructive, relationships with food & body image.I am still on the journey - and I can't read too many pages at once. Sometimes, I just end up breaking down inside and out.
This has been a transformational book for me. I have both the kindle version, which I read years ago and loved, as well as the audible version, which I have listened to three times and I would absolutely recommend. I find that I have no need for food when I acknowledge my feelings and accept them. I am learning to pay attention to my dreams and am learning about myself through them. There are so many gems in this book. It may sound funny that learning by metaphor would have any practical application for recovery, but I have found it SO much more effective than the books that give you checklists of behavior modification and homework assignments. I love myself more, I validate myself more, and in so doing, I love others more and respect their boundaries, because I am setting my own. Buy this book - it is a gentle, loving approach to understanding why you have this disordered eating - it's the best you knew how to do at the time. And now you can learn to love yourself into new behavior that naturally evolves because you are addressing the underlying needs that went unmet before. Buy it!!
If you're looking for a book that just tells you how to not have eating disorder symptoms, this is not the book for you! This book is for those who are looking for healing--TRUE, DEEP, REAL HEALING. I read this book in less than a day. Now I'm going back through it more slowly to take it all in. This is the first eating disorder book I have read (and I have read MANY) that talks about healing from an eating disorder. It isn't about whose symptoms are worse or yet another depressing memoir. This author uses metaphors, stories, analogies to reach your deeper psyche. It's an enjoyable read, yet a deep read. Look at her website for an example called The Log (www.dranitajohnston.com). I can't suggest this book enough.
I encountered this book when my relationship with food reached a peak of dysfunction. I went to a therapist, and in our first session she recommended this book. As soon as I started the book, I began to cry. It resonated with deep seated feelings that I had carried for a long time. I continued to cry as I read this book chapter by chapter, night after night. The book helped me see my dysfunctional eating in an entirely different way— that food was not the real problem, it was a “red herring.†The real problem was my relationship with my emotions, with myself, with others, and with the world around me. This beautifully written book with its many relevant fables helped give me perspective on the issues that I faced. I continued to turn to it as high levels of stress or emotion led to dysfunctional eating. I also very much appreciated Johnston's feminist perspective and her challenges to Western norms.I still struggle with disordered eating, but now I have so many more tools to help cope— both from this book and through therapy. I know this journey will continue for some time and I must continue to face the “tiger†of my relationship with food.

I obsess over every calorie that goes into my mouth, I think about food all the time, because I have to control it, or it will control me. Or so I thought. This book made me see that food and my relationship with it already controls me. In our society we are taught that there is only one ideal, one perfect body and yet less than 4% of women have that body and yet almost every one of us strives for it when it is impossible. Who tells us how we should look? Men. It's not a male bashing book at all but you have to realize that we live in a male dominated society and everything and I do mean everything stems from that. As long as we let other people control our minds and how we feel about ourselves, our lives are not our own.A powerful book, if you're ready it will help you change your relationship with food.

FREAKING FINALLY ★★★★★ StarsAfter 3 books that went basically nowhere with minuscule plot development FINALLY and I mean FINALLY the story took off and things HAPPENEDIt’s like Jordan had a check list of things to tick off and he just went done the list….✔ - Perrin looking for Faile and getting his woman back✔ - Egwene actually doing something useful. Sure she had to get captured and put in the white tower to do it but finally her story arc is way more interesting.✔ - Nynaeve and Lan finally getting a little relationship fleshing out and one of my favorite moments of the series. Way to go all Aes Sedea on your man Nynaeve. This is probably the only time I will approve of such a move.✔ - Avienda cutting strings from Elayne. Maybe it will be her turn with Rand again soon.✔ - Rand outing another of the Forsaken. The price might be a little heavy but he just keeps on swimming. Actually I love him and Min together, she seems to get him better than anyone else and I love how in her own way she is just as strong or actually stronger than him. (view spoiler)✔ - Mat and Tuon playing courting games that seem more like battle strategy I LOVE THEM SO MUCH TOGETHER✔ - Thom finally telling us what is in that letter that Moraince left for him how many books ago. Well we get to read it AND I’m so excited about where that is going to lead our crew.✔ - The Elayne the Daughter Heir finally finding her place. Whether it is on the Lion throne or not you will just have to read to see. Her arc is actually my least favorite maybe because so much time is spent on the pregnancy and sometimes she is so smart and THEN she does that very stupid thing towards the end that just leads me to believe she isn’t even close to ready to be a Queen.✔ - Birgetta being awesome as always. Why would we need Galad or Gawyn again to protect Elayne??? I just don’t know. I’m pretty sure I know who Gaidal Cain is reincarnated as *crosses fingers* that is my favorite deviant in training (view spoiler)And Much Much more…. A few characters get the comeuppances that they deserve and it is so gratifying.Was it worth going through three pretty slow books to get to some awesome? The jury is still out. For me yeah probably since Sanderson is finishing out this series and I read ~200 books a year so no biggy. But for someone else who doesn’t get to read so much and has to pick and choose probably not unless you are into extreme worldbuilding.Very excited to start the into the end with my favorite Epic Fantasy Writer the fantastic Brandon Sanderson.
Jordan must have known he was dying and didn't have much time to wrap up all the story lines of the WoT in one book, but he sure as hell tried his best. I've seen more advancing of the storyline in this book than for the past three or four books combined. Book ten was the worst book I've ever read with it's meandering nonsense from Elayne. Literally useless descriptions of a hundred nobles names, everyone's clothes, goats milk, and blaming Rand for her own actions. I was surprised to see more tactful storytelling in this book despite Elayne's horribly boring and pointless chapters which I got tired of and skipped through eventually. She is the most reprehensible character who still refuses to accept responsibility for her actions, is conceited beyond belief, and makes rash terrible decisions that get people uselessly killed and then shrugs it off as not her fault. Rand turns out to continue to make similar mistakes but Mat's story makes up for both those nincompoops! And Egwene is finally getting some more necessary character development to help her deserve her undeserved position as a leader of 200 year old witches. I mean come on shes what twenty?
I have been waiting for the pace to pick up and the plot to progress and it finally does in this book. Probably because originally there was only supposed to be one more book after this one so Jordan had to start wrapping things up. About time!!! It took me forever to start this book because I was sick to death of his writing and the slow plotting pace of the last five books! But I had made it this far and I hear that Brandon Sanderson does an excellent job and that the last three books are really good (my husband loved them, although this is his favorite book series so...). I am happy to report that this book feels more like the original books in the series, which were excellent. Stuff starts happening and instead of focusing almost exclusively on the girls, the guys get to have some "screen time." I read this book a lot faster and didn't have to resort to skipping parts like I did the last one or two books. I am so happy to be getting to the juicy end of this series!
I have read all of the books in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, about three or four times now. I am currently on kKnife of Dreams and I'm excited to purchase the rest of the collection. If you've never read these books and you love fantasy, please, pick up the first book in the series "Eye of the World." I promise halfway through the first book you'll be hooked!
"Knife of Dreams" is the 11th book in the "Wheel of Time" series, and I was pleasantly surprised that Jordan started to pull things together in this book compared to the previous one.Many people claim female characters in the series are weak, but I thought Jordan did a great job of adding dimension to Egwene's character as she faces her custody in the White Tower and her punishments for refusing to yield to Eladia's command. She is subjected to severe penance, but embraces it in Aiel fashion with great honor. In addition, I also thought Nynaeve grew immensely in this book in her relationship with Lan, and there was an awesome scene involving Lan and his destiny in the story.After meandering for the last two books, I thought Jordan did pleasing advanced the story arcs of Perrin/Faile, Mat/Tuon, and Elayne while including and some battles with trollocs and the Black Ajah. Rand's story also advanced, although it is a bit slower since so much focus was on the other main characters.I've already finished book 12, and I can tell you the story is really getting exciting now! I thought Jordan really got the story back on track with book 11, and Sanderson cranks things up in the remaining books. It is so worth the long read if you've been involved since the first book in the series!
