This is a book about getting even with life.It is the story of a young woman who absorbed the cruelties of her husband, an alcoholic, haunted Korean War veteran, until she could stand it no more, then gave up her whole life for her children. By picking cotton, cleaning toilets for the gentry, doing worse, she made sure that her three surviving sons would not have to walk around ashamed, in ragged clothes.In a smaller way it is my story, the boy who climbed up her backbone and made it out of that ring of poverty and ignorance, free and clean. It is about what I did with the life she gave me, and how I tried to repay her, and how I tried--and failed so miserably--to rewrite the past.The book is set in rural northeastern Alabama, and chronicles a poor, white trash family through three generations. The first third of the book is mostly about her and him, and us, me and my brothers, as babies. It shows the agony of the death of a baby brother who did not have to die, who didn't even get a name.It also takes us with my father to Korea. He tugged me there, the last time I saw him alive, when I was just 16. The tales of terror he told me there still sit like a broken bottle in my mind.The second third is about the wonderful life she gave me, the exotic, dark places I went, taking her spirit with me, like a talisman. They could out-cuss any damn body I have ever seen. I am only an amateur cusser at best, but I inherited other things from these people who grew up on the ridges and deep in the hollows of northeastern Alabama, the foothills of the Appalachians. They taught me, on a thousand front porch nights, as a million jugs passed from hand to hand, how to tell a story. I make my living at it now, as a national correspondent for The New York Times, based in my native South (Atlanta). It was my dream to do this someday, but some things even I was afraid to dream. In 1996, I was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, for what the judges called "elegantly written stories on contemporary America." They included stories on the country sheriff who caught Susan Smith, an Alabama prison where old inmates go to die, a Mississippi washerwoman who became a national hero, and the nightmare bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. I also won the prestigious American Society of Newspaper Editor's Distinguished Writing Award, for the second time. I have won more than 40 journalism awards, including several awards that might have actually helped people. But the best thing that happened to me in 1996 was the contract for this book, which allowed me to keep a promise I had made to my mother--a woman who picked cotton, scrubbed floors and took in washing and ironing--who went 18 years without a new dress so I could have school clothes. I have been at The Times for just three years, for the first six months on Metro in New York, writing about the homeless, violence, welfare hotels, other miseries, then covered Haiti for more than two months during the worst of the killing there in the late summer and the fall of 1994. I came home to find that I had been promoted to the national desk. They sent me home, almost, to Atlanta. Before The Times, I worked briefly at The Los Angeles Times, a failed experiment, and before that as a roving national correspondent for the St. Petersburg Times. In 1992-93, I was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, the only real college I ever had. I think I was filling their white trash quota. I went just six months to Jacksonville State University, in Alabama, in the 1970s. Before the Nieman, I was the St. Petersburg Times Miami Bureau Chief, covering south Florida, Haiti, the outbreak of the Gulf War, and other balmy places. Before Florida, I was a reporter in my native Alabama, at The Birmingham News, Anniston Star, Talladega Daily Home and Jacksonville News. I wrote about cockfights, speed trap towns, serial killers, George Wallace, Bear Bryant, and Richard Petty. I was born in a small town hospital in northeastern Alabama on July 26, 1959. My momma went into labor about three-quarters of the way through the "Ten Commandments," which was showing at the Midway Drive-In. I am not making this up. I think it's in Chapter Four. Since then, I have lived in Jacksonville, Anniston and Birmingham, all in Alabama, in Clearwater, Bradenton, Miami and St. Petersburg, in Florida, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, the corner of 110th and Broadway, New York City, and now Atlanta. I enjoyed the book because, as good writers do, Rick in many ways transported me back to my own experiences -- in this case my own raising in Birmingham. Although I was a little better off -- not much, but a little better -- I recognized in this book my own kindred chip-on-my-shoulder drive to make good, and to reward my own parents for faithfully struggling to give me the opportunities they never had. So I think that what makes Rick's writing great, at least for me, is that he says so well what all of us would like to say and do as we look back and appreciate our parents. He perfectly captures why I and so many other Alabama men find no insult in being called a "momma's boy," at least those of us who had mothers like Rick's. I only wish that I had Rick's ability to write my own tribute to my mother good enough to publish for all the world to see. Of course, Rick, as I'm sure you know, the best present you ever gave your mother was not the house, but this book.
There are so many of us who have been transplanted from the North to the South. Few, if any of us understand the new culture that we attempt to adopt. Rather many of us try to reform it so it closer resembles what we left behind. This story explains that culture so well that it helps those of us who are transplants want to accept more than change our new homes. Plus, as a mother, I really appreciated the author's devotion to his mother. Enlightening read!
I can feel the hot sun. I can feel the ice cold springs. I can feel the speed of the car, motorcycle or vehicle blow my hair. I can smell the sweat of hard work and taste the fresh tomatoes. I live in the South near Jacksonville, FL where this author went to school. Being born in 1947 in the South means you lived through segregation, voting issues, school and lunchroom sitdowns if you survived the nuclear bomb in your personal bomb shelter. Rick Bragg personifies all five senses of the era, the language (likker is one of my favorites), plus touch, mental, and physical. I lived with black and white tvs and rabbit ears and even little tubes that a neighbor could fix. I remember my grandparents getting an "indoor" bathroom. This book is a memory massage that melted my soul. Thanks to Rick Bragg. Keep on telling it like it is.
What took me so long? I've been following Rick Bragg in Southern Living Magazine for years. Truthfully, for quite awhile now its the only thing I read in the magazine. My husband knew I was a fan of his so he bought me his latest book for Christmas and I read it from front to back in a sitting. So, I finally went hunting for more and found this on my Kindle. Again, I read this from beginning to end but not in one sitting. I wanted to stretch it out. To make it last. I cried and laughed and cried again. In the end I felt it was the most beautiful love letter to a Mother I have ever read. He may not have meant for it to be only that because it seemed it was also a love letter to his big brother. Yes, maybe, just maybe, his Dad. I hope my children feel the same way about me. In the end, that's all that really counts. Isn't it?

This is actually a great book, but the print job is terrible. I have all of Massad Akoob's books and the man is eminently knowledgeable. The book is very timely with excellent information. He is definitely one of the top authorities on concealed carry. I'd give this book a 3.5 if I could; 5 for great information, 2 for terrible print job on the cheapest paper imaginable. It could only be worse if it was printed on toilet paper. The paper is so cheap it makes the details of what is supposed to be illustrated in many of the black and white photos difficult or impossible see. I've been a publisher myself and there is no excuse for using paper this cheap.
I am very much enjoying this book. It uses a good combination of print telling a concept and photos to illustrate what Mas is talking about. This is the second one of his books I'm reading and I'll have to read more in the future. This man has a wealth of experience and a lot of good common sense.
I had hopes for a bit more new information, but, as Ayoob says in his introduction, this is to provide you with more of the subtle details. Major, gotta have details, are covered in previous editions. This one is more on how to apply them smoothly.
Unfortunately, this is a rather lame Vol II from my perspective. There is simply not enough new information to warrant buying this book and too much of it seems like nothing more than filler.
takes vol 1 to another level, there are of course repeated stuff for those who forgot or missed vol 1. read carefully as many good tips.

Old Soul Love is indescribable. The author is a gifted poet, creator, and above all an amazing human. Pointdexter writes with such intensity, emotion, and authenticity that I am moved not only by his writing but by his spirit in the truest form. He writes of love and loss, his understanding of self and being connected to the human race, and having emotions so powerfully consuming that at times, feeling everything at once is best balanced only by feeling nothing at all. Christopher Pointdexter is a romantic but also a realist ... he is dark and he is light ...all in One. However for me , the author takes my breath away in a select few he writes of for the woman he has loved most with his entire soul. HIs expressions of love are best described through a series of beautiful metaphors, symbolism, and dreams that without a doubt leave their mark. I recommend this to all... especially for those who feel so much as they navigate the waters of being sensitive (and yet strong) in a world of hardened souls. Christopher Pointdexter is profoundly talented author and his books Lavender and Naked Human are beautiful reads as well. A treasure for sure.
I am pretty sure that a lot of the poems/quotes in this book have been taken and re-printed from his other books (which I own). Found that a bit disappointing as I was hoping for more new material. However, I will always love this author and the way he writes and thinks.
Anything by Christopher Poindexter is a must read! His poetry will make you feel things you've never felt. I've only read a few pages, but already, my heart is overwhelmed with such beautiful words. Can't wait to finish it!

My collection of Christopher Poindexter works are growing! These are all valuable treasures, and Old Soul Love did not disappoint. Check it out! I consumed it in one sitting, like a shot of burning liquor, and have since gone back and savored bits of it for the delicacy it is. The way that Christopher speaks of love and his personal/or observational experience of humanity (and himself) is not like poppy, bubble-gum drama, but rather a jazzy, mature, dark red wine. This was a great read that I related to a lot. I'm a poet as well and has inspired me to write. Been fueling motivation for me. I love the way he speaks of love, his sensitivity, his adoration of his grandmother. His words are very soft but raw at the same time. Definitely has a fan, looking forward to his future work and will go and read the past work of his that I missed. Keep up the great work Chris! 🌹

And the same scene Friedman remembers, I remember.Friedman makes his case. Just as he has before, he does not claim his evidence and arguments are conclusive. He does argue and he does show that certain things are possible and certain things are more (or less) likely. Using the convergence of textual and archaeological evidence, long advocated by Bill Dever, he makes a compelling argument that "the" exodus occurred, that it was small and that it had intimate links to Egyptian culture and religion.In thinking about how the story came to us in its current form, I would have liked a discussion of the Hyksos probably contribution to the story's content (I am convinced that the Hyksos provide the militaristic aspects of the story and, possibly, the water crossing). And I would also have liked to hear his thinking on the relationship of the Mosaic group to the Ahkenaten revolutionaries (personally, I am convinced that the man Moses was one of Ahkenaten's minions). Note that Levites-as-Ahkenaten-follower does impact the chronology....In sum, yet another worthwhile read from Prof. Friedman.
I loved the author’s earlier work, Who Wrote the Bible?, and had hopes for this one, which I read with a very Jewishly knowledgable book group. I was a bit disappointed this time around. The key propositions and themes of the book can be presented in fairly short order. They are intriguing, and provide a fascinating if necessarily speculative hypothesis on the identity of the Hebrews in Egypt, the limited number and specific identity of those involved in an exodus different from that described in the Biblical account, the possible influences of Egyptian and Midianite thought in the development of monotheism, the joining of the Levites to the Israelite tribes in Canaan, and the close relationship of the Exodus as a motivating element in subsequent Jewish attitudes toward the stranger or alien. What is distinctive about Friedman’s approach is his effort to join together and synthesize recent scholarship in biblical criticism with the results of contemporary archeological findings (and sometimes the absence of findings) in Israel and the surrounding region. I think this is a worthy effort and one that suggests plausible ways forward in understanding the Exodus story.So why not five stars? The book struck me as overly padded and repetitive iin a number of respects. The author is exceedingly self-referential. While there is a pretty extensive scholarly apparatus in the endnotes, I’m not sure the author presents and responds to the strongest arguments against his own positions, although he does present and acknowledge the contributions of other scholars in the field, particularly his own teachers. This may be a consequence of trying to present an accessible account that is more a popular than a scholarly book, but nonetheless is built on an edifice of scholarship.I found the book’s final chapter on the meaning of “neighbor†to be the least well developed and persuasive.
Friedman's book essentially asserts that the core moment of the Exodus Event is the Deity handing Moses the 10 Commandments, Friedman, like so many modern scholars, reminds the reader, that there was most likely NO Exodus event as described in the Bible.Though surprisingly, none of the Scholars really examine how short the distance is from Egypt to Mount Sinai and how doable it is with a small hiking group in a matter of a two months or so. Not a scholar seems to know that people every year hike the 2000 mile hike of the Appalachian Trail starting in Georgia in March and finishing in October at Mount Katonah, Maine. Most hikers, hiking at about 20-25 miles a day, so a trek of some 1000 people to Sinai is certainly doable. And not a scholar even seem aware of Xenophon's "Anabasis."But to Friedman, the central event is the Deity handing Moses the Tablets of the 10 Commandments and that these are central to live, to existence. I suppose, while the question appears facetious (Martians handing Moses the 10 Commandments--then it would be science fiction) the 10 Commandments as central to existence is not. There is always something offensive to dismiss Biblical accounts as so much fiction, to deny the Exodus Event seems to strike at the very notion of Judaism itself. The equivalent of saying the Crucifixion never happened thus striking at the soul of Christianity.Friedman wears his scholarship lightly but packs a great deal of information into a small book.
Friedman makes a balanced and compelling argument, combining the best of contemporary biblical scholarship with his creative twist--the Levites represent the group that migrated from Egypt. He effectively shows how one can argue for a historical exodus using contemporary scholarship; he rightly observes the embellishment in the biblical story but sees an authentic historical core. The Levite groups merged with other tribal groups. I like his parallel of the very ancient Song of Miriam (Exodus 15), from the Levite group, with the Song of Deborah, which mentions Israelite tribes but not the Levites, as evidence. I'm not as convinced of his arguments for the early development of Israelite monotheism. His final chapter makes a strong contemporary application of the Exodus story and biblical traditions arising from it to promote positive, enduring religious values for a better society.The book is written in a very conversational tone, easily accessible. Strongly recommended.

It was clear from reading that Alfred didn't actually write this one. Usually their tab books are borderline at best. This one, on the other hand, is quite good. The other giveaway is the tablature style. This is noted in a system used in Japan. To the average eye, it looks pretty similar, but the sheer technicality of the the format is a dead giveaway. Also clear is that it was clearly worked out on a Classical-style guitar, instead of a more traditional (At least in the states) steel string.What this means is that some techniques are a bit redundant, some notation is more confusing than need be, and the skill required for some songs is above the difficulty of the song itself. Still, it provides a good start point to tab out version for yourself.The other nitpick is the lack of songs. I would have left out Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tacks and Twilight Princess. Create a Volume 2 for them, because they are given a single song a piece, and all three feel like after-thoughts. Missing was the shop music from OOT, the overland music from Adventure of Link (And various field pieces) and the biggest ommision, the Ballad of the Wind Fish. Since this was the central piece to Link's Awakening, I was a bit disappointed,Lastly, I felt a three bar version of all Ocarina Songs from OOT would have taken up no more than a single page two at the most, and solved one of the primary frustrations many guitar players have when selecting Zelda tunes. This is like creating a Super Mario Brothers Tab book, and not including the underground theme.
The arrangements are ok, but kind of repetitive. The font is quite small- the publisher should reduce the size of the header on each page to make the notation larger. There are no fingerings listed, only notation and tab. Be prepared to play in A Major. Some of the arrangements are nice but I’d really like fingerings and larger print.
If you are an experienced musician who loves the Zelda series, this is perfect. If you are trying to encourage a beginner with fun music? Well... this was beyond the skill of even the instructor. Look elsewhere for beginners.
I have had many requests from guitar students for some Zelda songs - which I knew nothing about. This book is easy to read, guitar tab and written music. A great teaching tool!

Has both tabs and sheet music
My son has been taking lessons for a couple of years, he is 11, and some of the songs are do-able. He takes it with him to lessons and his teacher helps him pick out what to work on. So this is not for the beginner, as it might frustrate, but with a little experience fun!
This is a must buy for any player of guitar and the Zelda series.The selection is great, the songs spectacular, and very good for rookie players and long-timers alike.I was impressed by the tablature, and the chords are right on.It also includes the original key for each song, so one could adjust the strings to the exact sound.

My father was on the "old" Lexington, before WW2. So, I enjoy anything that is about it. Sadly it was sunk in the war. So, can never see it. Did visit the "new" Lexington in Corpus Christi. Has room for "old' Lady Lex".short but good to see. Does focus on WW2 and my interest is from first arrival in Pacific to record run to Pearl.
This is a very well done series, and this offering is no different. Subject is U.S.S. Lexington CV-2 whose all to brief career in WW II is well covered. There are also pictures, lots of them as well as a short history of the ship. I recommend this series to any navy buffs out there as well as those with an interest in carriers.

Outstanding coverage of one of our earliest aircraft carriers, the photographs of her under attack and the damage and her subsequent loss are stirring, one cannot Imagine the pain of the men who manned her for almost 20 years watching her destruction. Beautiful shots of her in peacetime, her majestic form cutting through the sea, she was the Queen Of the Flattops.

Steve Wiper's long anticipated monograph on USS Lexington (CV-2) is both a valuable and worthwhile addition to any naval aviation collection. It follows the format of his previous releases as a 72 page essay leaning heavily on photographic coverage of the subject. This photography consists of clear, well chosen views of Lexington, many of which will be new to most readers, particularly those involving her action at the Battle of the Coral Sea. The reader is well served, for instance, by photographs--on pages 6 and 10--which compare Lexington`s bow before and after the flight deck (and sponson) modifications which materially aided her flight deck operations. Several overall shots of this great aircraft carrier are also presented which illustrate both the aircraft arrangements and the armament of this vessel.In addition to several shots displayed in color, the text is livened with numerous official drawings and text which depict Lexington's general arrangements and armament modifications, particularly those effected at Pearl Harbor in late March of '42 which have eluded or confused many. The inclusion of photography showing the removal of her 8-inch battery is to be appreciated. The elaboration of all these modifications is a welcome addition to the common record. There are also a number of photographs which clarify the status of the ships' configuration and outfit, as well as her paint scheme, included with appropriate text. Further clarification of her final anti-aircraft outfit is to be applauded as well as a basic recapitulation of the air groups she shipped during her lifetime.Included within the covers of this monograph is a basic description of her career with emphasis on her wartime service including special and deserved highlight of her operations in the South Pacific. Interestingly, herein is found a very egregious error which purports that heavy cruisers Quincy and Vincennes formed part of the escort for transport movements covered by Lexington in early `42. Although found in other sources, this error is difficult to understand given that both of these vessels were in the Atlantic at this time with Quincy off Iceland and not transiting the Panama Canal until June '42 with Wasp, and Vincennes at New York and not moving to the Pacific until mid-March with Hornet. However, these comments are trivial considering that the focus of the monograph rests on Lexington herself.There are additional treats found within the covers of this publication including various choice views of Lexington's island, early wartime views of heavy cruiser Chicago, implied commentary regarding the ability of Lexington to operate under attack (see caption, page 41) as well as extensive photographic coverage of her last action. All in all, Wiper's research and presentation of Lexington's story is thoughtful, well packaged and good value for the money. His results are commendable and his efforts should be encouraged. Warship Pictorial 33, USS Lexington CV-2 is highly recommended both to modelers as well as to amateur historians. Within its covers is found a wealth of photographic detail and an attention to details previously overlooked--for legitimate reasons, to be sure--by other authors. An excellent resource for the beginning dog owner and a must read for hopeful trainers. (I gave the book four stars only because it is a collage of stories and repeats too often Cesar's life story.)
Millan has a very unique and understandable way of looking at dog training. Many of his ideas work well, however not the easiest to do. Observation of your dog to catch them before they escalate is difficult if you have more than one dog. Overall, very interesting look at dog psychology.
I bought this for my brother and he said there are a lot of helpful advice for dog training. I also see it at home when he enforces what he read on the book with his dog training.

Easy to understand and use techniques for training made simple loved it
I've always liked Cesar Millan's TV shows and recently got my first dog, so I was looking for a basic guidebook that could help me out with my new pet and teach me how to teach him some tricks. Although TRAIN DOGS CESAR'S WAY is not a "dog-trick book", I found the basic guidelines I can apply to teach my dog any trick I want to "the pack leader's way" (by the way, my dog didn't know any of the five basic dog tricks included in the book).I truly enjoyed this book and found it very useful. It helped me understand the principles of dog psychology and behavior conditioning, as well as the importance of being a pack leader and, like Cesar always says in his TV shows, of maintaining a "a calm, assertive energy" at all times.I especially liked the body blocking exercise, as well as learning about the importance of understanding our dogs "from a dog's point of view", for most people make a mistake when they treat dogs like humans.I also liked learning how to apply the different training techniques he uses, as seen on TV, about his case histories, and about his life as an immigrant and his early days in the dog training business. I give it five stars.
I just finished reading the New Augmented Edition of "Train Dog's Cesar's Way" and I must say I am impressed. I tried many of the techniques with my dog "Kitty" (I thought it was funny, sorry!) and I was surpised as how well they worked! I am an American living in South Korea teaching English and my dog is a constant source of companionship for me when I am feeling homesick. I really love the little guy. Using the techniques I learned in this book, I was able to teach my dog the basic tricks like shaking hands, but also more fun ones like crawling. I really find that to be hilarious. After watching Cesar Millan on TV, I was always impressed by his abilities, and this book really gives you insight on how to train your dog like Cesar does. It's almost like magic! These techniques REALLY WORK....I know, they worked on MY dog! At over 150 pages, the book really is a steal at $2.99. I could not be happier with this book. Thank you, Al Parr!
