Review
Praise for The Runaway Species “The authors look at art and science together to examine how innovations―from Picasso’s initially offensive paintings to Steve Jobs’s startling iPhone―build on what already exists and rely on three brain operations: bending, breaking and blending. This manifesto of sorts shows how both disciplines foster creativity.†―The Wall Street Journal “Unravels the interplay of art, neuroscience and evolution, while celebrating the special thing that is human innovation.†―Entrepreneur "Which inventions have had the most impact―and why? What can they teach us about game-changing innovation? And how will science and technology revolutionize our lives next? The rest of The Runaway Species sheds light on these issues … bolstered by delightful visuals." ―Harvard Business Review “The Runaway Species approach[es] creativity scientifically but sensitively, feeling its roots without pulling them out.†―The Economist "A lively exploration of the software our brains run in search of the mother lode of invention… The Runaway Species is beautifully produced, illustrated and written. It sweeps the reader through examples from engineering, science, product design, music and the visual arts to trace the roots of creative thinking to three key mental skills: bending, breaking and blending.†―Nature "With the pleasing pace of an extended essay, the book offers surprises and insights at every turn, and the authors argue convincingly that basic strategies inform most creative behavior. . . . Essential―and highly pleasurable―reading for anyone who cares about ideas and innovation." ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "The Runaway Species is a simple and delightful read ― no science knowledge required. And in a rare triumph, the fact that this book was written by two authors never got in the way of making me feel like someone was telling me a story or delivering a thirteen-chapter TED talk. " ―Cooper Square Review "Art and science converge in this beautiful collaboration. . . . Divided into three parts, this inquiry covers a complicated set of connected topics in an engaging and surprisingly accessible way. . . . Packed with vivid images, countless examples, and fun facts that will leave readers eager to discuss it with friends, this is a refreshing and thought-provoking book that captures both the wonder of science and the beauty of the human spirit." ―Booklist "An intriguing and riveting mélange of perspectives that successfully delineates what creativity and innovation are about. It is an outstanding and inspirational volume that will have a broad and global appeal. It will categorically transport the reader into the past and the future fusing them together as one scientific structure, constituting an electrifying and enlightening scholarly reading." ―The Inquisitive Mind "A paean to the ingenuity of the human species, a description of the anatomy of creativity and a rallying cry to cultivate our skills for the benefit of our collective future." ―Tes.com "Brandt and Eagleman have written an exuberant book about creativity. If you were a fan of James Burke’s brilliant Connections, or perhaps of Don Norman’s ruminations on design, there’s a similarly sumptuous buffet of brain candy here on which to pig out." ―Neo.life “Readers familiar with David Eagleman’s writing will encounter the clever analogies that typify his style. Co-author Anthony Brandt, a professor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, ads rich texture and scope to their speculations. It is not obvious what NASA and Picasso have in common. Nor what flamboyant hairstyles, bicycles, or stadium designs share. But the answers seem obvious once the links are pointed out.†―Richard E. Cytowic, New York Journal of Books "It’s a belter of a book for anyone with an interest in neuroscience, creativity or education... Understanding ourselves and our creativity is a journey that also helps us to understand what makes us human. The Runaway Species not only makes the complex readable, but also opens a fascinating world that exists between predictability and surprise." ―Business Hitchhiker

WHO IT'S FOR: Scientists, writers, inventors, artists, musicians, and eternally curious folks who could use an extra shot of creativityWHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: How do exceptionally creative people -- like Leonardo da Vinci, Bach, Chopin, Einstein, Edison, Picasso, Steve Jobs -- come up with and execute their ideas? What makes the book special are vignettes of the other 200+ artists, scientists, composers and engineers you *haven’t* heard of yet, and all the cool ideas they’ve come up with as they “bend, break and blend†old ideas to create new ones. The book’s fluid writing style and 200 illustrations make for fun, fast reading. Some essential new concepts I learned:• “Skeuomorphs†are “features that imitate the design of what has come before.†Nothing is 100% new.• Every emerging billion-dollar industry is already 10 yrs old• To come up with great ideas, embrace error so you can proliferate lots of options• The 20% Rule: the brain seems to prefer visual stimulus of 20% complexity• The greatest creators (eg Picasso, Edison) were just insanely prolific. The more stuff you make, the more likely that some of it will be great.• Let young minds embrace the arts: “This is because the arts, due to their overtness, are the most accessible way to teach the basic tools of innovation.â€WHAT IT’S NOT: Although it can teach you much about the process of innovation, this book’s not a creativity how-to book per se. For that, I recommend Edward de Bono’s classic Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step by Step.WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: The dozens of fascinating stories of perseverance, ingenuity, and breakthrough – e.g. self-healing concrete, carbon-fiber violins, or James Dyson’s 5,127 vacuum prototypes (!) – demystify innovation, humanize it, and just might catalyze a world-changing story of your own.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil, Happiness Engineer, TEDx presenter of "Awaken Creative Genius" and author of Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine
As a musician, writer, business person, and teacher, I couldn't put RUNAWAY down! From the first page to the last, I was captivated. Problem solvers and creatives are always looking for inventive ways to stretch beyond our limits, and for the encouragement to take risks. Historically, how has creativity affected humanity? Where are examples of people using imaginative resourcefulness to take us to places yet discovered? How can we inspire our children and give them permission to be curious, to explore, and to invent? Bravo to you Anthony Brandt and David Eagleman for your diligent research and delightful read!!!
This spring the Alabama School of Math and Science decided we were going to have a book for our entire community to read and discuss in the new school year. This is the book we chose. We are very excited with our choice! Eagleman and Brandt have written a book about creativity which is accessible to adults and teens. It is inspiring, positive and makes you think. We will be using it in the classroom and boardroom. There is something for everyone here to chew on. Their approach to creativity means the playing field is level and open to everyone. And what more could educators want than to have teens believe that the impossible is possible, there are no wrong turns and one should always look at a problem from a myriad of angles. I'm telling you this book is a great place to start a thousand conversations starting with two little words..."What if..."I will also let you know that the customer rep from the publisher (catapult) has been absolutely amazing!
Thanks for sending me this book! There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it came in mint condition and in good time.I ordered this book because it’s the common reading for my university and I wanted to read it so I could relate to the incoming freshman since I’m working Freshman Preview Week. I have no complaints about this, but the book DOES say it’s an advanced copy which might’ve been good to state in the item description. (Sometimes advanced copies haven’t been proofread ðŸ‘ðŸ») I’m excited to get to reading!
A beautiful blend of science and composition; where creativity abounds and helps us understand who we are. I have been a fan of David Eagleman since happening upon his PBS airing of "The Brain," then quickly bought all books that he published. His partnership with Anthony Brandt has made so many science and art pieces of life become so much more accessible. Highly recommended.
This book was an absolutely delightful read! I loved all of the examples, anecdotes, and COLOR pictures throughout the book. They draw from a dizzying array of fields and disciplines to illustrate their point, which is that creativity is a human universal that touches all parts of our lives. They also make a strong case for focusing more intentionally on cultivating creativity in our schools. In the 21st century, this is proving to be an essential skill that we ignore at our peril. Highly recommended read!
Excellent book. I was asked to read it at work and really enjoyed it.The book discuss creativity from both the science and art aspect of it.. This is not a connection often made about but the explanation are clear and easy to understand. The chapter on creativity at work and at school should be mandatory reading
A good read decorated with rich examples from arts and science how creativity worked up to now i highly recommend this book to interested people

Amazon.com Review
And the Sea Is Never Full is Elie Wiesel's memoir of the period between 1969 and the present. Wiesel, an esteemed writer (his Night is among the greatest memoirs of the Holocaust) and political activist, begins the book remembering a challenge given to himself at age 40: "I will become militant. I will teach, share, bear witness. I will reveal and try to mitigate the victims' solitude." He defends dissidents in the Soviet Union; draws attention to the atrocities of Cambodia and Bosnia; and fights apartheid in South Africa. He attacks Holocaust deniers, stands with Lech Walesa in Poland, visits Albania as a representative of President Clinton, and wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel's tragic boyhood compelled him to work very hard to love the world. He has learned to do so, and this memoir, like all of his best writing, teaches its reader to love the world while looking directly at its greatest terrors. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly
This second volume in Wiesel's memoirs (the first was All Rivers Run to the Sea) isAas a memoir by this Jewish novelist, activist and Nobel Peace laureate must beAa moral accounting, of himself and of those he has known. And he spares no one, from Israeli U.N. ambassador Abba Eban to French president Fran?ois Mitterrand, in an honest report on how he believes they have let him down. The tale resumes here with Wiesel's marriage in 1969, at the age of 40, and follows the author through his most active years as a goad to the world's memory (of the Holocaust) and conscience (in the realm of human rights, especially those of Soviet Jewry). The events are often dramatic: one of the book's climaxes comes in 1985, when it was announced that President Reagan would visit Bitburg, a German cemetery where SS members are buried, and Wiesel had to decide whether to receive from Reagan's hands the Congressional Gold Medal. Courageous as ever, he accepted the awardAand used the occasion to speak truth to power, urging Reagan to change his plans for the trip. Wiesel is equally forthright about the political maneuvers and infighting that led him to resign from chairing the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council before its task, building a museum, was even begun. Despite the failings of humanity, which he relates so well, he remains optimistic about the future. Wiesel's writing is as fluid and evocative as ever, and his storytelling skills turn the events of his own life into a powerful series of morality plays. No one who cares about ethical imperatives should miss this book. Photos not seen by PW. (Dec.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Elie Wiesel is a writer I have read and will read gratefully with pleasure for he offers what I understand is the very substance of the meaning of life: his love of words and a conscientious use of them, a deep perception of pain, sorrow and experience, a sense of responsibility towards others together with his faith in a God he loves in spite of his apparent failings, I enjoy his deep appreciation of joy and happiness shared with others as part of Jewish religious rituals.
Love this book very interested

Review
Flocks is one of the most powerful works I’ve read… …It’s remarkable in that it avoids judgement and preachiness in her handling of what are generally perceived as extremely sensitive subjects... ...a searingly honest piece of work. ― Comics Beat(Nichols) brings an instantly apparent, appealing, and accessible intensity of emotion and craft to whatever she’s doing, in whatever vein. ― The Comics JournalThe intimacy of a mini-comic that deals with an issue close to the heart of the author and reader can make for powerful reading… …My own personal experience came later than it did for Nichols, but I can still feel the pain and fear on every page of her comic as though it were my own. ― Panel PatterNichols's incredibly empathetic and humane autobio series about the various groups that have had an impact on their life reaches an almost unbearable point of agony and then resolves in an unexpected but remarkably hopeful way... ...After extending empathy, compassion, understanding and the benefit of the doubt to everyone else, Nichols finally gave it to themself. The joy and radiance in Nichols's line at this point fairly bursts off the page. ― High-Low

Flocks is an amazing visual journey through all the angst of growing up, but somehow finding our way....L. Nichols has an uncanny ability to translate emotions to his drawings, making that reason enough to read Flocks. The book had a nice rhythm that reflects life. Sometimes life is a quagmire that you have to gather yourself to break out of, and sometimes life hits you at the rapid fire pace and you can catch the wave or tumble around in the wash. The book left me with a hopeful feeling for the resiliency of people, and the importance of friends and community, and motivation to check in with all my friends and reminisce.
I don't think I've read anything before that so nicely combined the themes of:- needing to get away from a restrictive community to figure out how to live a good life- needing the strength and support from that community to learn and achieveLife isn't simple, it's complicated. This book is a quick read and helps you understand how one person navigated life's complexity.
Logan’s creativity and genius shines through in Flocks. I read it within an hour and came away with a “wow†moment. The art is highly impressive and depicts his journey very thoroughly. Well done Logan.
*** Trigger warning for homophobia, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders. **L. Nichols was born in Louisiana (some time in the mid-to-late-1970s, if the rad TMNT reference is any indication!) and assigned female (“Lauraâ€) at birth. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist community, L. always felt different; an outcast, a freak, a sinner.Throughout his childhood and teen years, L. tried to suppress his attraction to girls – and was further confounded by the occasional crushes he developed on boys. While he enjoyed some parts of the church experience – the emphasis on faith, the sense of fellowship, and the feeling that there are things bigger than oneself – his church’s virulent homophobia and adherence to rigid gender roles alienated L. and led to isolation, depression, and self-harm.But whereas L.’s community failed him on one front, it succeeded on another: despite his being labeled “female,†L.’s family and teachers encouraged him to pursue his love of science and technology, culminating in a Master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab. It was during his college years that L. pinpointed the reason for the animosity he felt toward his body, and decided to transition.FLOCKS is L.’s memoir, told in graphic novel format. The vehicle through which L. chooses to tell his story perfectly encapsulates the many contradictions in his life: while STEM majors aren’t typically considered artsy or creative, L. is indeed a talented artist. His sad little rag doll depiction of himself is at once whimsical and rather heartbreaking (doubly so when we witness stuffing fall out of self-inflicted cuts on his legs). Given all he’s been through, L.’s upbeat, optimistic attitude is downright uplifting. (And I typically consider myself an Oscar the Grouch type, so that’s quite a compliment coming from my neck of the dump.)While the main thrust of the story is L.’s burgeoning sexuality and exploration of his gender identity, he tackles a number of other serious topics as well: his parents’ acrimonious divorce; the pressure of choosing a major and settling on a career path, post-graduation; polyamory; eating disorders; self-harm; depression; binge drinking; an appreciation of nature and the natural world; and the impact of community and in-group/out-group identity on one’s sense of self. It’s an engaging, beautiful story, in both form and content. There’s a little bit of repetition of themes and ideas early on (and not between chapters, i.e. to string them together, but within the same chapters), which does detract from the story. Even so, it’s a must-read, and not just because it’s more or less a one of a kind story, at least at this point in time. (Dear publishers, please give us more of this! Kay thanks bye.)
What I found to be the standout of this graphic novel was the author's repetition of showing us their interpretation of the unseen feelings they experienced through life. Its a very well illustrated book and the writing is very personal. An excellent queer memoir throughout, I hope this story reaches many.

This is one of the best art books I have encountered. Not only samples of stunning and diverse works done in chalk, but also very thorough instructions on the how, if you want to try it yourself and excel as an artist. Everything from transferring a design to different techniques of using pastels, from designing a chalkboard to huge 3D street painting projects. Plenty of world renown artists are shown in this book, and that too is a great thing - not highlighting one single artists, good as he may be. The different styles, techniques, sizes and uses really make this book a chalk-bible. I think it's a must-have book for artists and art lovers, and it's especially interesting because it's an ancient medium that is also used today and even taken to new horizons.
I have just enjoyed a comprehensive and fun read on the art and history of chalk and pastel drawing. Tracy Stum has done a fantastic job of covering the wide arc of the use of chalks and pastels as a craft and as a fine-art medium. In her book The Art of Chalk: Techniques and Inspiration for Creating Art with Chalk, Tracy Lee Stum covers everything from the production and handcrafting of chalks and pastels, to the preparation of grounds, supports, binders, and fixatives. Her all-inclusive text covers three major topics: designers, observers, and performers. She first discusses the design and layout of decorative elements, lettering, and signage for chalkboard artists, followed by an inspiring tour through the use of pastels for fine art portraits, landscapes and still lifes. She completes the picture with a discussion of the preparation of perspective grids, anamorphic grids, and transfer grids and cartoons, for the scaling-up and transferring of large-scale designs for street-art, murals, and ‘3D’ (anamorphic) designs. Ms. Stum even covers ‘4D’ images that incorporate digital technologies: virtual reality, projection mapping, and animation. The Art of Chalk is a tour de force of an ancient and often misunderstood expressive art-medium, with wonderful full-color photographs of a wide range of works by many very talented artists. This book is a ‘must have’ for any serious artist’s library, and a joy and inspiration to the novice and the art-appreciator.I highly recommend this well thought-out and beautifully illustrated book. –Roberto Quintana, Art and Soul Productions.com
Did not like this book -- I was expecting more demo pictures on how to create the art when it just tells you about the different types of art you can make. Its not really a "technique book" like I was hoping, will def be returning :(
Daughter loves this book. She is getting into chalk drawing and has provided good examples and instructions
I thought this book was an awesome collection of chalk art. When I first received the book, I went page by page admiring all of the artwork and was in 'awe'. I must now read the book from front to back to learn about the techniques that are involved in chalk art. I am amazed at the 3D street paintings! Tracy Lee Stum did a fabulous job in inspiring the non artists of the world with this book - now its time to experiment!!! You wont be disappointed in this book!
For anyone interested in the use of chalk/pastel, this is a must have book. From Street Painting to chalkboards to fine art applications, this book digs into the many avenues in which you can create stunning work. The thing that I love about it the most is the many examples from amazing artists and how they utilize the medium and bring it to another level. Whether for yourself or as a gift for someone else, this book will be something that is used over and over again and will help elevate the art you create. Highly recommend!
Awesome art work , also offers instruction, great bookfor those with an interest in pastel art.
very comprehensive. most books on this subject just feature artist work, this one actually discusses the art form. Was looking for a book to get me started. Finally found one.

"If you ask me how I want to be remembered, it is as a winner. You know what a winner is? A winner is somebody who has given his best effort, who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has utilized every ounce of energy and strength within them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean that they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've given it their best. That's a winner." —Walter Payton

From the Inside Flap
"Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make that linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's okay to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best." His legacy is towering. Walter Payton--the man they called Sweetness, for the way he ran--remains the most prolific running back in the history of the National Football League, the star of the Chicago Bears' only Super Bowl Championship, eleven times voted the most popular sports figure in Chicago's history. Off the field, he was a devoted father whose charitable foundation benefited tens of thousands of children each year, and who--faced with terminal liver disease--refused to use his celebrity to gain a preferential position for organ donation. Walter Payton was not just a football hero; he was America's hero. Never Die Easy is Walter Payton's autobiography, told from the heart. Growing up poor in Mississippi, he took up football to get girls' attention, and went on to become a Black College All-American at tiny Jackson State (during which time he was also a finalist in a Soul Train dance contest). Drafted by the Bears in 1975, he predicted that he would last only five years but went on to play thirteen extraordinary seasons, a career earning him regular acknowledgment as one of the greatest players in the history of professional football. And when his playing days were over, he approached business and charity endeavors with the same determination and success he had brought to the football field, always putting first his devotion to friends and family. His ultimate battle with illness truly proved him the champion he always had been and prompted a staggering outpouring oflove and support from hundreds of thousands of friends and admirers. Written with veteran journalist and author Don Yaeger in the last weeks of Walter Payton's life, Never Die Easy presents Walter's singular voice--warm, plainspoken, funny, self-aware--along with the voices of the friends, family, teammates, and business associates who knew him best at all stages of his life, including his wife, Connie, and their children, Brittney and Jarrett; his teammate and friend Matt Suhey; former Bears head coach Mike Ditka; and many, many others. Walter made Don Yaeger promise that his book would be "inspirational and leave people with some kind of lesson . . . and make sure you spell all the words right." Never Die Easy keeps all those promises.

NEVER DIE EASY is the story of Walter Payton the NFL Superstar, and more importantly, what he was as a man.The book starts out with Walter's last days fighting cancer. The circumstances leading to his announcement of his illness were brought to light.Walter, his brother Eddy, and sister Pam shared what it was like attending school before and during integration. Walter's football talent and personality made the process easier in Columbia,MS. On Walter's high school and college career there is a lot of contributions from teammates that played with him.Walter explained how he approached playing the game of football- "You can't work towards two different goals - individual and team. You have to play for the team goal."The book has shared insights from Bear backfield mates- Roland Harper, Matt Suhey, and Jim McMahon.Walter's view of his retirement, and the failed bid for ownership of an NFL franchise were some things that probably aren't common knowledge among fans. The two issues were directly related. That was a big disappointment to Walter Payton - not being part owner of an NFL expansion franchise. He came very close in St. Louis. If he had different partners, he might have fulfilled another of his dreams.Transcripts of the eulogies were included in the book. His son Jarrett, brother Eddy, Mike Singletary, John Madden, and Mike Ditka all spoke. This book focused more on the man than the player. There are a lot perspectives from his family members and close friends. "Never Die Easy" described Walter's running style. As great as he was on the field, he was even greater as a private citizen, contributing to charitable causes, often anonymously. In the days where contract size and celebrity reign in the NFL, Walter Payton was more like the Bears of old who played for the love of the game.If you want to read about a modern football hero with an "old school" work ethic, this is the book.
I am a huge Walter Payton and Bears fan, and he was a huge hero of mine when I was growing up in Chicago. I believe he is the greatest football player to ever play in the NFL.But I don't think much of this book. This book has a lot of interesting quotes and stories and good information, but it is really poorly written, disjointed, and omits a lot of stories and facts that paint a fuller picture of Payton. The book largely reads as if a P.R. firm wrote the book to lionize Payton, and seeing as it's an autobiography, that really seems to be the case here. I don't know about you, but that's not a book that interests me. This book's main value is in some of the direct quotes from the various people who knew him as well as some of his quotes, but not much more than that. While there is a lot of inspiration stuff here that people may respond to, so there is in another books as well.In my opinion, the Jeff Pearlman book is a much better read. Aside from being written considerably better, it paints a much fuller picture of Walter Payton, his generosity, faults, relationships, inspirations, worries and concerns, passions, efforts, coaches, high school and college experiences, occurrences, his time with the Bears, all of it. He's an inspiring guy who had a rich, full life on and off the field, and really, considerably more complex than he's painted to be in "Never Die Easy". Someone like that deserves more than a poorly written P.R. puff piece like this.
I grew up with Walter Payton as my heroe and role model. I owe my love of football to not just my father, who I thank for getting me so interested in such a wonderful game and team like the Chicago Bears, but I also owe my love of the game to my heroe...Sweet #34, Walter Payton. This man embodied what it is to be a true player of the game by not just playing while hurt but encouraging others do to the same. He defines what a team leader is all about by also encouraging everyone to play to their full potential. This book is one of the best books I have read in a very long time, I enjoyed it tremendously. Last book I enjoyed this much was "Papa Bear - The Life And Legacy Of George Halas". I will admit that it brought many tears to my eyes but I still read every word through the tear filled eyes. It just brought back so many memories of being at many of the games they talk about in the book...his record setting or breaking games especially. It also showed that he was just human...like the rest of us and that we all have faults, including Walter and the great thing is he wasn't afraid to admit it. I absolutely love the format that the book was written in, even if it wasn't in the original format they wanted to take (because his death came way to soon), to have so many views/opinions of so many of Walters family...team mates...coaches...personal staff....friends...other NFL players, etc. It gives the whole view from many directions.I would recommend this to anyone, even if you weren't a Walter Payton fan....you will be by the time you finish this book. Can't wait to read the book by Jeff Pearlman.
I bought this book for a reading student of mine who graduated from my program. He had expressed interest in a sports autobiography. I will never forget the Bears winning the superbowl the year that my grandfather died. He had played for the Bears years before, and after a very long dry spell, they won the bowl. I couldn't help thinking that he was there somehow. Payton was on that dream team, and I will always hold a special place in my heart for him.
This book really brings you into the world of Walter Payton. This book is not just about football and the Chicago Bears. It's about life and the human spirit.

Well written, has a ton of information, but so much of it is not useful to me at all. Most things that are said I already know even as common sense. It is a good read, but not really worth buying it to let it sit now. I could get a list of those things online to go back and review. Needs more wording and a reference to an online list to read and not just to fill out the pages.
This book recommends an oddly chosen hodgepodge of jobs that are not especially well suited to mid-life career changers. You might as well open any book on careers and put your finger down at random. The suggestions ranged from lower-level jobs that you don't need a book to tell you about (office cleaner, home health care aide, retail -- and I'm not sure I'd call these great for those who are older and less able to stand for long periods or do heavy lifting) to those with a high barrier of entry, such as a Ph.D. (seriously?). The ones that fall under the actual category of "great jobs" are pretty much those that require master's degrees and Ph.D.s. How many people over 50, in this economy, have the motivation and money to go back to graduate school to retrain for a completely different career field that they then may not be able to break into thanks to their age? Also, the difficulty of breaking into some of these careers is underestimated or misleading, such as suggesting that "no formal training" is needed to work as a copyeditor, writer, or editor. Good luck trying to compete with scores of experienced writers who have been downsized from newspapers, magazines, and other media and are scrambling to find work in an oversaturated field. (No, I'm not one of them.) BUT, if you are completely at sea and looking for job suggestions, some of the listed jobs may trigger some ideas. The more general job advice in the second half of the book is likewise a mixed bag. It ranges from the demeaning/condescending ("keep your hand out of the [retirement account] cookie jar") and blatantly obvious (eat healthy) to the genuinely useful (the chapter on non-profit work). There is enough of potential use in this section, depending on how clued-in you are about job-hunting, that I gave this book three stars instead of two.I'd suggest getting this one from the library and skimming it to see what parts might be useful for you.
As previous reviewers have posted, this mostly has low minimum wage paying jobs and the book was of very little value--much better resources out there. I find it interesting as well that some people post reviews when they have not read the book yet. Therefore, I don't go necessarily on the number of stars a product has but actual reviews of people who have used/read the product. This set of reviews kind of fooled me--as the reviews mostly were good when I found the book of very little value. Appreciate the ease at which you can return a book/product.
School bus driver? Volunteer worker without pay until the hire you? This book was a total waste of money. Maybe the dummies book would have been a lot better. I should have ordered it or anything besides this garbage.
On the strength of the authoring company, AARP, I had some great expectations for this book and therefore bought it to read on my summer vacation at the lake. It was mostly a waste of time and money. The "great" in the title is my basic issue with this book, as many of the jobs it describes hardly rise to that level. IIRC, some of these wonderful opportunities include: Walmart Greeter; Rural Paper Delivery; Barista; and various volunteer opportunities such as Meals-on-Wheels. Maybe it is just me but virtually all of the jobs included in this book had already occurred to me (I'm a working professional, 57 years old in 2014) and I had a general sense of the nature of work out there. Nothing really new here for me, and none of the listings broke new ground for me either.
Interesting read. However a book wont/doesnt influence a manager to give a senior a chance over a younger, pretty face. No matter the experience.
This book offers ideas that are both traditional and non-traditional for those seeking to make the change. I liked the part-time section most as an option to stay engaged without sacrificing flexibility.
Nothing new here. Disappointed.

I am an avid Lisa fan, and own 99% of all her published work. This novel doesn’t disappoint. I was swept away to another land, and learned about the heartbreaking events from back to back wars, and the awe inspiring actions of the haenyeo at a little place called Jeju.Lisa’s books often cover a range of time periods in China, so this was a refreshing change that sweeps you away to Korea. I was involved with my characters, crying when they cried and laughing when they laughed.Ms. See has once again managed to entwine an amazing tell of womanhood, survival, and courage into the historical wonders and atrocities that happened in a land and time far away. I regretted finishing the book, and at the same time, I am already planning to read it a second time very soon. Like all of Lisa’s books, this book is something you will want to add to your collection, so you can revisit the characters again and again.
Love all of Lisa See,s books and this doesn't disappoint! Enjoyed learning about the seas and what those women did for their families. And how forgiving or not forgiving can alter your life.
It's amazing the power of a book can have on a life and I am not talking about this one. Somewhere some nameless bureaucrat decided that the citizens of a Korean island, Jeju, needed copies of the book, Heidi, set in the Swiss Alps. Copies were distributed and for some reason the citizens fell in love with it. They sat around and read it as families and discussed it at work. It made a difference in people's lives. I just loved that story.I have always admired Lisa See's books but I struggled with this one on several different levels. Yes, It was interesting story and I learned quite a bit but the violence in it was a real problem for me. At about 60% through I almost set it aside as it was so graphic. Yet I kept on and, in the end, I am glad I did.It is the story of a matriarchal society where the women work as haenyeo divers. They dive in the ocean and harvest the sea's treasures including abalone and octopus. They have amazing body chemistry to withstand the cold and the hardship. The men stay home and tend the children and make light meals. Of course, it is not as good as it seems. Property is still in the man's name. They often take the women's wages and gamble and drink it away. As their daughters grow up they take over the child raising and food preparation and the men are left with nothing to do. As the women trudge home from a long day of sea harvesting, they come home and clean and cook and mind children. It's not as idyllic as it seems.Because of Jeju's location, it has a long history of occupation first by the Japanese then the Americans. Both are cruel and there is massacre after massacre. Villages are burned and large burial grounds appear. Life is a constant struggle and they soon learn not to say anything because of all the informants to all the different competing military factions. The story is told around two best friends's lives, Mi-ja and Young-sook. They grew up together and became divers and then their paths diverged after marriage and their struggles will break your heart. While I suspect most will be moved Young-sook, it is Mi-ja's story that grabbed my heart. An interesting book that gave a glimpse into another way of life that I had no idea about before reading it.
Lisa See has set her latest novel primarily on the Korean island of Jeju, and tells the story of Young-sook and Mi-ja. The two girls are best friends and the book opens with them becoming baby-divers, the first step in the coming-of-age process for joining the matriarchal society of women divers of Jeju. Young-sook is the daughter of the divers’ leader while Mi-ja is tainted because she is the daughter of collaborator with the occupying Japanese forces.See has again written about friendships. This story is well-written and her descriptions of every-day life are detailed without bogging down the story the way so many other historical authors do. The story is surprisingly fast paced and there are enough surprises to keep the reader reading into the wee hours of the morning.See’s characters are well-developed and likable. The friendship of the two main characters is believable and the reader will find herself hoping the two friends can survive the twists and turns of their lives. For fans of Lisa See, this will be a welcomed addition to their collection of See books. To the reader who hasn’t read See yet, this is a good starting point because this book has it all – history of a little known society, strong women characters, friendship, excellent writing, and a well-told story.
