I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

I love Lucy Worsley and have read quite a few of her biographies. The best thing in my opinion is her easy, breazy writing style infused with intelligent humor...what I took a star off for tho, is her tired choice of the included events - 24 "days" (events) from Victoria's life which have been studied and written about extensively countless times before. I could forgive her that if it weren't for her all-too frequent Prince Albert bashing which is unfair and uncalled for; V loved her husband magnificently and there is much proof of his enormous contribution to England. However, in all it's an interesting book to read for the hungry Victoria fan, or one without much prior knowledge of the main events of her life.

Worsley provides twenty four vignettes in Queen Victoria's life. She adds much material to supplement the chosen significant dates. Nothing earth shattering is revealed but readers do get a better sense of the woman behind the crown. I devour every book about Queen Victoria And reading this book was a pleasure. The author provides an extensive bibliography and notes at the end which were fun to peruse. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

After reading Daisy Goodwin’s VICTORIA, which she based her television series on, I was hooked to the life and time in which Queen Victoria lived. What an extraordinary life she lived, I loved Worsley’s ability to examine the Queen but also reveal the underlaying experiences of Victoria as a woman a head of her time. The biography explores her many roles ex. daughter, wife, and widow. Throughout the biography I enjoyed Worsley’s ability to present information from many historians but also present her conclusions as well. These made the book more tangible and something that kept me reading. One area I found of interest was Victoria’s identity as a widow following the death of Prince Albert. Worsley addresses the current examination in which historians are examining Queen Victoria and present their conclusions as well as her own. I found this made her assumptions more factual and often left you at your own devices developing who Victoria was. The text is academic yet approachable for those that are familiar to Queen Victoria’s story. I enjoyed Worsley’s Jane Austen at Home and enjoyed the personable yet academic approach to Austen’s life. To differentiate biographies and women their biographies are worlds apart and are worth reading. If you have not read a biography on Queen Victoria or seen a film adaptation based on her life then this is not a place to start. The many facts, and occurrences serve to those who need more than an elementary approach to the life of Queen Elizabeth. I recommend this for those who are interested in Queen Victoria, the Victorian era, and would like a thorough look into the many roles she played in her life. I give this book a solid four out of five stars on goodreads.

In this wonderful book she looks at 24 key events in the life of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) who reigned over the British Empire from 1837 to 1901. If you are looking for a somber and dull political history of Victoria's long reign look elsewhere! If instead you prefer a wise and insightful study of Victoria's memorable private life you have picked up the right tome off the shelf! Victoria was fifth in line to the British crown when she was born to the Duke and Duchess of Kent in 1819. She had a complex and at times stormy relationship with her German born mother. Victoria ascended the throne on the death of her Uncle William 1V in 1838. She married her German cousin Albert (1819-1861) on February 10th 1840. He was a good man who was logical but somewhat cold in manner, The couple loved one another though they did have differences as Victoria was very willful and emotional while Albert was much more reserved. The couple produced nine children; Their oldest son Edward (Bertie) born in 1841 reigned as Edward VII from 1901-1910. Worsley opens the door on the wonder of royalty in chapters dealing with the birth of Victoria's parents, her ascension and coronation, childbirth, marriage, views on life and many other aspects of the great queen. This book kept me riveted with her clear writing style and the depth of her research into the life of Queen Victoria. An excellent biography !

I liked this. It was not a comprehensive biography. It featured the 24 most important days in Victoria's life.

This was a great read. Perhaps there is something "lost in translation," because the style of the writing seems rather labored, and almost clumsy, but the story itself is absolutely fascinating. You learn about a part of the world you don't hear much about, and a fish that I had never heard of, and along the way, this is really a story more about what motivates people to do what other people might think is crazy. Ultimately, you realize that whether they catch the shark or not, and if the catch it what they do with it (I won't spoil the ending), has become kind of irrelevant to the way of life that you've read about. Not many books out there are like this one. You may find yourself thinking about Faulkner's "The Bear" or similar stories. I sure did.

It was a fun book. Dragging on about the location and the interesting history of the fish town of skrova.Fishing is hard.

Fantastic book that kept me captivated the entire time. There was a lot I learned about the way of life in Northern Europe. Would highly recommend.

This book takes you into another world. It’s evocative and interesting. I felt like I was there in the boat with them. What an ending!

My sister was recently married and her and her new husband wish to build a coastal modern home here in Florida. Not knowing what to get them as a gift, I purchased this beautiful book along with some money for their future endeavor. The photos and room layouts are absolutely beautiful and more of my kind of taste and I don’t prefer modern. I was thinking that this was going to be a little bit more modern as far as the decor and room ideas but apparently they really enjoyed the book and if anything, it’s a beautiful coffee table book. I would recommend it.

If you want to attain a soft, beachy or organic feel in a chic, tasteful and natural way, this is your book! The spaces are well designed, the photos are superb and the writing is top-notch. This book inspired us to immediately apply some of the principles and inject some Coastal Modern vibe into our newly remodeled space. Wish we had ordered this book before starting our project. (We had a good experience with the seller and received the book quickly, too.)

This book arrived in perfect condition and is a timeless reference peace for modern, beach location decorating. Each page reveals another take on coastal.

I've long enjoyed Fraser's Flashman novels and his stories of life as a subaltern in the Second Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders immediately after the end of the Second World War. This wonderful book takes us into the war, and into the China-Burma-India Theatre, about which many Americans, including myself, know comparatively little.It's a complex book, certainly not glorifying war, but demonstrating how, as a crucible, the experience of war can shape a man. The writing has all of Fraser's well-known gifts: wit, fascinating characterizations, and wonderfully descriptive narratives of actual events. He ably explains the workings of a Section (Squad, in our army.) of British troops during the war. The reader meets his fellow soldiers, and suffers when, just as they are becoming known, they begin to be killed, either in action, or in one case through a horrible misadventure.Also valuable is Fraser's opinion that today's U.K. is not necessarily the U.K. that he and his mates fought for. He clearly disapproves of the direction in which the U.K. has been taken. He also has a thorough dislike of the modern penchant of the media for going to great lengths to discover the feelings of soldiers who return from action in modern theatres of war. He opines that he and his mates were fortunate at the end of WW II because at that time there were no counselors. He believes, and I don't necessarily disagree, that a person's feelings are private and that people are entitled to keep them to themselves. He posits that they are indeed better off if they do.I can't do this book justice in a review that is actually short enough to bother reading. All I know is that I'm a bit different for having read it. I also believe I now have a better understanding of my father, who fought as an infantryman at Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa. For me, this was a very valuable read. For anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of the enlisted man's experience of combat, I highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful memoir of a young soldier fighting in the Burma campaign at the tail end of WW II. Of course, as someone who fell in love with the Flashman series of historical novels many decades ago, anything with Mr. Fraser's name on it will get my attention.My own father, now gone, was just about his age during the last year of the war in Europe. He arrived in Normandy early on D-Day, via a glider that landed in a flooded field. With the exception of himself and two others, everyone in the glider drowned. His war continued with from that point, to the day when he was wounded (for the 2nd time) towards the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Unlike Mr. Fraser, my father was never comfortable describing in any ordered way his experiences during that year. But I get the strong feeling that if he had been so inclined, and had the skill and insight that Mr. Fraser demonstrates in this book, he would have told a story much like the one presented here. I'm an old timer today, but I certainly feel privileged to have shared this story with Mr. Fraser

I thought this book was a very unusual and awesome look at what it is like to be a grunt in Burma. Loved that part. For me I would not have bought the book had I know there was so much 'dialect' writing of which I could hardly understand. Perhaps if you were Scottish, Irish or English it would be easier but for me (an American) it was very difficult to get though and understand what they were staying. In general I thought the author had a great sense of humor & I liked his plain spokeness. No apologies and good insights. I would have given it more stars but it was just too hard for me to make out the dialects. Bless these men, they really were great!

To learn about the men from Cumberland (the Northwest corner of England) who fought in Burma during World War II, read the brilliant QUARTERED SAFE OUT HERE, where G.M. Fraser’s uses idioms and the vernacular to preserve the character and values of the Cumberland British infantrymen. Here’s a taste:“Ey, Grandarse — ‘oo d’ye spell Iredell?”“Oo the hell dae Ah knaw? W’ee’s Iredell?”“Liberal candidate in Carel. Ah’s writin’ yam tae see w’at ‘e’s on aboot.”"Weel, Ah doan’t belang bloody Carel. Ah belang Peerith, an’ Ah doan’t ken w’at constituency it’s in, an’ Ah doan’t care ‘cos Ah’s nut votin’, neether.”“Ye ought to vote, man.”“W’at for? The Labour man doesn’t stand a fookin’ chance, an’ Ah’m boogered if Ah’ll vote Tory. Them boogers ‘es bin in ower lang.”“Weel, vote Liberal, then.”“Git hired! Ah doan’t knaw booger-all aboot politics, but Ah knaw the Liberal’s ca’d Roberts, an’ ‘is family’s temperance, so knackers till them. They ‘ed a cellar oot a Naworth, boorstin’ wid the best drink in the coonty, and the teetotal boogers poured the lot on’t doon drain! Think Ah’d vote for them?...”In this wonderful memoir, Fraser works outward from his section—10 men and the smallest unit in the British army—to examine the perils and rewards of the infantryman’s life in war. Here, the perils of the Burma campaign are obvious—leeches, swarms of mosquitos, huge and bizarre insects, friendly fire, and deadly skirmishes with fanatical Japanese soldiers. But the infantry has its rewards as well, including the satisfactions of teamwork, mutual respect, shows of bravery within the section, and the banter of funny sensible men who use raillery to preserve their sanity.When Fraser mustered in Burma, he was nineteen and not studying in a pre-med program, as his family wished, because he didn’t do well enough on his tests. Immediately, this young Fraser has hair-raising experiences protecting the perimeter of his section’s camp, encounters the fog of war as Japanese soldiers break through the camp’s barbed wire, participates in a divisional attack at Temple Wood, where he sees men from his section killed, and is amazed as his kleptomaniacal section flouts the strictures of a suspicious warrant officer. Then he experiences one final skirmish, in which Fraser, the only person that knows how to fire a bazooka, reports to an officer—sort of a mix between Kurtz and an eccentric uncle—who plans and executes a brilliant riparian ambush. It’s all superb.In his epilogue, Fraser addresses the American use of atomic bombs to end World War II. Here, his perspective is that of the British infantryman in Burma, who expected next to attack the dug-in Japanese in Malaysia and, one day, to invade Japan. A few years ago, I searched for a kids' cookbook that I could love and that my kids could enjoy and follow easily. I was so surprised by the variety of cookbooks and the poorly written directions they included. In particular, I remember looking at Paula Deen's cookbook for children. The small print, light type, and colored background... I wanted a better cookbook for my kids! For me, cookbooks are inspiring (even if I almost never follow a recipe exactly)! I ended up finding one that I loved-- Kids Cook!, a Williamson Kids Can book that is now back in print. But, there are no photographs in the cookbook. My kids love color and they are not drawn to that cookbook. On the other hand, a new cookbook arrived at our doorstep last week and my kids hovered over it--drinking in the recipes, excited to cook!That cookbook is Cooking Class by Deanna F. Cook. A few years ago, Storey published two cookbooks for kids about sewing that I like: Sewing School and Sewing School 2. With this cookbook for kids, Storey followed the same format and editing style--which I loved back then and love again with this new cookbook.Cooking Class is divided into seven sections that cover the basics, meals, snacks, and of course--dessert! The Basics section is what I have found lacking in most kids' cookbooks, but in this one, it is done well. Good tips, good pictures, and even a page on how to clean up! I like that they added two pages on how to fold a fancy napkins and setting the table. I have a feeling that our next holiday meal will have some beautifully folded napkins!From there, the recipe sections begin. The recipes are divided into 1, 2, or 3 spoons. 1 spoon recipes can be made by kids themselves. 2 spoon recipes might need an older sibling or parent's help. 3 spoon recipes use sharp knives and the oven/stove, so an adult is most likely needed for kids under 10 or 11. My daughters are 9 and 11 and are uncomfortable with the oven and can turn on the gas stove, but usually prefer me to do that.The recipes are easy to follow and have great pictures which give clear instructions. The reading level (because of the size of the type) is probably 3rd grade and above. I know that my first grade son can read most of the words in these directions, but the size of the type would be a stumbling block for him.Our first recipe we tried from the cookbook was the grab and go granola bars. I was a little skeptical about how my kids would like them since they aren't baked, but my whole family ended up loving them! I think next time, though, I am going to try and mix the chocolate chips into the mixture and then press into the pan so that the chocolate chips are mixed throughout the bars and aren't just on top.I suspect that within a few months every recipe in this cookbook will have been tried by my kids!Aside from the recipes, the cookbook includes some fun stickers, place cards, and conversation questions for the dinner table. These are of high quality and my kids have enjoyed them all.I think you get the idea... when choosing a great kids' cookbook, this one tops my list! After window shopping several children's cookbooks on Amazon I decided on the Cooking Class cookbook for my daughter's birthday. My daughter (6yo) has been telling me she wants to learn to cook like me. This cookbook is perfect. It's even spiral bound! There are tons of colorful photographs which I even like in my adult cookbooks. There's step by step instructions making it perfect for teaching children. And I have to mention the placecards and stickers included in the back! I would highly recommend this.

This book is so easy to follow it makes me look like the best mom ever! I don't know what I ever did without it! Seriously! Awesome book if you want to teach your kids how to cook. Wonderful homeschool resource.

This is a great and fun cookbook! My 8 year old was so excited to have her very own first cookbook, and she right away went to work cooking. The first recipe she made was the tortilla chips using soft tortillas. It's a great starter cookbook with great photos and descriptions and instruction.

This was purchased as a present. Before the party all three of my kids wanted to read through it. The two older kids (13 and 10) decided they needed to make something out of it! It has helpful information for kids newer to the kitchen. The pictures are helpful too.

I got this for my 8 year old for Christmas and she loves it. She loves looking through it and finding a recipe for us to try. Also, she's more likely to eat stuff that she normally wouldn't if she's involved in its creation :) I remember my mom getting me my first cookbook which I still have and love. I still use the banana bread recipe! Happy with this sweet cookbook.

I am very impressed with this book. The recipes are healthy and easy for kids to follow along with. Everything we have made has tasted good! I bought this for my 8 year old daughter and she loves it!

Huge hit. My 10-year-old grandson loves it and his mom says they may make this a real "class" at home! He likes to cook and I think the recipes look very kid-friendly from both the making and eating aspects. And I like the extra lessons in cleaning up, folding napkins and setting the table, etc.
