For Johnson, a sociology professor, 1950 was a banner year, marking the summer when the 10-year-old Midwest native became a fan of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league lasted only 11 years (1943-1954), but interest in it was recently revived by the film A League of Their Own . Johnson warmly recalls her own days in the stands and convincingly portrays the importance of the league to young female fans, who often became "Coke girls" to their favorite players, meeting them after every game with a can of soda. Her history alternates excerpts from interviews with 26 of the women who played for the Rockford Peaches and the Fort Wayne Daisies in 1950 with newspaper accounts of that year's championship series between the two teams. Many of the players' recollections have a certain sameness, but the author's enthusiasm for her subject keeps them fresh. Former Peaches catcher Marilyn Jones contends that management insisted on the women being feminine because fans "wanted to see a bunch of girls that acted like girls, and looked like girls and played like boys." Several players were shocked to learn that they were expected to play in skirts and attend "charm school" to learn how to be more graceful; one woman claims "I learned how to be graceful by playing ball out in the pasture, side-steppin' all the cowpies!" Fabulous book. Very well researched and well written about a unique historical period in our national history.
Great book! I love how she not only interviewed players, but she included coaches, trainers, managers, fans, etc. I would give anything to have been able to experience this first hand. It must have been incredible. My only complaint is that she only interviewed two teams, the Peaches and the Daisies. Definitely recommend this book.

While Lois Browne's "The Girls Of Summer" is perhaps the most complete history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, this book is the most personal account due to Ms. Johnson's own fandom of the early 1950's. It's an extremely well-done book interpolating Ms. Johnson's text with interviews of former AAGBPL players and contemporary newspaper game accounts of the 1950 league championship series. While Browne's book (and others) are a little more academic in their approach to the subject, this is the one that really gives readers the best "feel" for what it was like for women to play baseball 50-60 years ago. Parents considering buying this for their children should note that there is a little more emphasis on player sexuality in this book than the others, but that detracts little from the overall effort. I've read four or five books on the AAGPBL, and would consider this the best of them (with Browne's book a solid second).
This is a remembrance of and look at the AAGPBL through the eyes of a woman who was once a ten-year-old fan of the Rockford Peaches. That in itself is exciting for the reader to know and keep in mind. The book is organized around the seven-game championship series between the Peaches and the Fort Wayne Daisies in 1950. Each chapter includes memories, reproductions of newspaper articles, interviews with the players. There's a lot of information in this book, though there's no index through which one could easily find the information. Nonetheless, Recommended!
I feel cheated!!! I was born too late to have been an eye-witness to these remarkable women in baseball! Along with the Cooperstown recognition as well as the movie, "A League of Their Own", it is just not right that these wonderful athletes have not been given even more credit for proving to so many fans, men and women alike, that there is just cause for having a Professional Women's Baseball League today. Susan E. Johnson gives the reader the heartwarming stories of day-to-day life in the AAGPBL. She brings to life the individual women who played their hearts out whether for one season or many providing a glimpse of what it was really like to live the life of a Rockford Peach or Fort Wayne Daisie or one of dozens of other teams. Readers will end the book envious of the lives led by these remarkable women and ask why there isn't a similar league today (though a few major adjustments might be in order regarding the uniform and social rules and regulations). God Bless each and every one of these women for their contribution to the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and to Susan E. Johnson for taking the time and effort to share her stories with those of us who didn't know there really was a league of women athletes who could run circles around many of their male counterparts in baseball! Johnson provides statistics not only for individual players but for the teams in general and doesn't hesitate to compare such detail against the men's teams. There are quite a few instances when these women athletes exceed their male counterparts - a remarkable achievement in many ways but sadly not known to the general public. The reader instinctively knows the author relishes sharing the details behind the history of the AAGPBL, the managers, the fans, the women themselves as it is learned early on in the book that she was a young fan of these ball players (Rockford Peaches) and seldom missed a home game. Her enthusiasm is easily transferred to the reader. The league eventually ended in 1954 but the spirit remains alive through the continued efforts of former players and their families and fans. For anyone that enjoys the sport of baseball, that enjoys particularly the sport of Women's baseball, or for anyone really curious about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and the real women behind the league, you'll love this book and find yourself thirsting for more!
I just read this book, and was surprised by how moved I was by the story of the history of women's baseball! The interviews with the former players were both humorous and touching, and framed an outstanding portrait of a unique, and practically forgotten, era. I hope a lot of young women read this book, as it is quite an inspiration.

This is the first time I've ever written a review and I feel compelled to do so. There are a number of good recipes in this book and as such I have decided not to return it. I've also never returned anything to Amazon before.That being said, there are a number of issues with this cookbook that you need to know about before you buy it. First, there are no pictures. Which is fine for me, but for some people its a big deal. The other thing you need to know is that there are a lot of recopies in this book that are NOT actually Keto.Keto, by definition is fairly strict in terms of its make up. It is a high fat, low-carb with moderate amounts of protein way of eating. The typical caloric breakdown is 65%-75% healthy fats, with 15%-25% protein and 5%-10% carbs. The book even talks about this breakdown in the intro section. But then goes on to include quite a few recipes that do not meet this criteria.There are a lot of recipes in this book that based on the listed nutritional breakdown could only be described as high protein, low carb with moderate amounts of fat. And that's just not Keto.I do like a number of the recipes in the book and have decided to keep it, but if you are looking for a collection of strictly KETO recipes to make with your instant pot, this may not be for you.
Recipes are confusing to an Instant Pot owner. Many call for placing the contents in "a pan" and placing the pan into the Instant Pot. Do not own a round pan that would fit into my Instant Pot so in reviewing the recipes, have to reject them.Agree to with other reviewers that the recipes are incomplete in some cases and appear to have been copied from some other source so that they could become a part of the book. Am continuing to look for another cookbook with printing integrity. And, one that realizes that all people don't own a six or eight quart Instant Pot.
So easy to follow with the book open in the kitchen. The section on instapot basics was also very helpful for an instapot newbie like me. Oh, and the images of the food make your mouth water.
Many call for setting the substance in "a skillet" and putting the dish into the Instant Pot. I really do want to use the GUI applications as much as possible, but I know I have to become proficient with the command line to properly use Linux. This book and others by Jason are teaching me the techniques I have to learn to get where I want to be.

So, I just finished "God's of this World: A Philosophical Discussion and Defense of Christian Demonology". All in all it was a great book. The historical survey of views regarding the metaphysics of demons throughout church history was very informative. He ended up rejecting the Quasi-material ontology of demons that was espoused by several church fathers, but which actually bled in from previous Greek thought on the ontology of Demons. As such he argues for a immaterial ontology of demons as more consistent. I also largely agree with his position that Demons do not interact physically with our world Via some sort of Psychokinetic (PK*) ability. Though this is a very common belief amongst demonic realists, Guthrie devotes 4 chapters (8-12) to persuasively arguing against demons having PK* and for their exclusively interacting with the world through what he dubs Evil Cognitive Interaction (ECI). He then defends this ECI model from objections from the old and new testaments as well as philosophy (Chapters 10-12).The one thing I disagree with Guthrie on is his affirmation of substance dualism which is a big reason underlying his affirmation of an immaterial ontology for demons, but I am an Idealist and so while I disagree with some of the reasons he gives for an immaterial ontology of demons, I can still affirm his conclusion, that demons are immaterial. Though if idealism is true demons wouldn't need a PK* power to interact with reality, because there wouldn't be a immaterial agent effecting a material object, a mind acting on matter. Rather it would be a mind acting on information (for example physical objects. which would also be mental ontologically) or on other minds.Sadly he only deals with the implications of his metaphysics for 3 types of dualism (Cartesian dualism, Thomistic dualism, and emergent dualism) and physicalism. But I digress. Either way it's a great book for anyone who's ever wondered about demons, if they exist, and how they can interact with our world. I would highly recommend this book.

I ordered this book as I am a vet student and we only get cows and horses in large animal anatomy. This is a helpful guide, although some of the information is straight up wrong. My book came with a lot of inked writing from the last owner, so many of the corrections were already made for me. This is the only goat anatomy book I have found. The illustrations/diagrams are beautiful, I would buy it for them alone.

We have a copy of this book in the anatomy lab at my vet school. I use it constantly for the goat labs. the illustrations are great. I came up here hoping to get a copy.. but the price is ridiculous. You can probably find the same stuff online for free.

This book is absolutely hilarious! I can't wait to use it as a gift. Some of the pages you can't see the curse word clearly which makes it even better. Then you look again and realize it isn't just a cute picture. Great quality with lots of coloring options.

Although an older version of the book.....much of the cultural and historical information is the same in the newer editions. (I wouldn't go by the visa requirements, hotel prices, etc....as those frequently change.) Overall, and excellent book on the country.
I got this discontinued book for one cent and worth 600 times what I paid for it. My professional tour guide also considered it a high quality book and requested to keep it himself at the end of my tour.

Would be great with a new updated issue
I just returned from two months in Pakistan, and I primarily used the Lonely Planet. Using the Lonely Planet for travel can tend to give one the feeling that all countries look and taste the same, and are inhabited by mostly backpackers and english-speaking hotelkeepers. The hotels recommended manage to sustain a surprisingly similar clientele throughout the Middle East and South Asia at least, and it starts to wear thin after a bit. The maps of many cities were not up to LP standards, Peshawar's Old City being a notable example. The Rawalpindi section could use an update, and I must say that the food recommendations generally seem to be stabs in the dark, in which case one is better off stabbing in the dark according to his own tastes. Accomodation selection criteria must be devoid of any Architectural or historical interest factors, but is quite successfully utilitarian. Many wonderfully intriguing and inexpensive old hotels are skipped. The ubiquity of this guide tends to ghetto the Western backpackers in little enclaves, useful both if you wish to avoid them like the plague, or you relish their company. The historical notes are surprisingly knowledgeable in most areas, though some notes concerning the British Raj period are either tritely anti-colonial or of dubious veracity, sometimes both. The Paksitani bureaucracy is a much more flexible entity than the authors would suggest, and things like Foreigner's Registration and exit taxes are not necessarily carved in stone. In conclusion, this guide definitely caters to the trek-minded eco-groover, with disproportionate emphasis laid on the Northern Areas, and on repeating tired environmentalist mantras.
Perhaps just below the usual Lonely Planet standard, this guidebook surely is a wonderful companion for your journey through Pakistan, filled with interesting as well as entertaining data and information, as well as tips for the traveller. There are some minor lacks, such as bad coverage of the battered Kashmir region, and perhaps too much focus on the usual tourist sites. After using this Lonely Planet Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway 7th edition during my recent 6 week trip to Pakistan I must say that this book is an essential guide for sure. I traveled all along the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar (China) down to Islamabad. From Islamabad I continued to explore the rest of this fascinating country to the southern city of Karachi. If you are planning a visit to Pakistan you simply must have this book. My only criticism is that the map inset of the Karakoram Highway contains serious errors such as placing Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan along the Karakoram Highway region. Lonely Planet should correct these errors as soon as possible so travelers don't think they can cross into Pakistan from those two countries through which I also traveled in 2008.
