So I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this book. Finally the day came!!!! And it was so very worth the wait. Lines were drawn in the sand. Questions were answered. Secrets were revealed and put to rest. Declarations were made. Raven helped her dad out of a dangerous situation. Friends from the past were introduced. Such a great book!! This series just keeps getting better and better. I absolutely loved the book and series!!!!!! A must read......over and over and over again!!!!
The Crossbreed series is one of my all time favorites and Dannika Dark didn’t disappoint with Nevermore! If you’ve gotten this far in the series there’s no reason to recap the fantastic world-building, or how amazingly well developed each of the characters are. They are honestly so real that finishing a book is like leaving family behind. The term book hangover doesn’t do it justice, it’s more like homesickness. So, in Nevermore we’re really delving more into the lives and history of Raven and Christian. We learn about the events and people of their past, and who played an important role in determining who they are in the present. Some new characters are introduced, and some names mentioned in previous books are brought to life of these pages... some deliciously good, and some I would rather throat punch than read about.Houdini makes a few appearances just to tease us, and I love every second of it. I know we’re supposed to hate him, but he’s wickedly intriguing to me. I slurp up his snippets like a Houdini addict.I wish I could pace myself so the books could last longer. But I cannot. I can’t get enough.
Nothing happens worth noting in this book except one thing. The plot goes in circles around family drama that I didn't really care about and was bored reading. And if Raven and Christian weren't having enough, continued - unresolved, problems already -new love and old love interest were added to mix. Really?I enjoyed the first few books in this series but the last book was underwhelming and this book was just bad. I will no longer keep this series on my must read list
This is my favorite book in this series. It provides closure and leaves the reader wanting more. Raven Black is a wounded soul who has found strength in herself but learns to trust in the strength of her family and loved ones as well. This book ties up her heart, her emotional journey. It sets the tone for who she will be in the future. Her journey has been amazing and I’m so exited to be able to follow along. I love that Dark writes all her books in the same world. I’ve read every single one and can’t get enough. Buy her books, you will enter a skillfully crafted world unlike any other. Go for it. You’re welcome.
This was another cracker of a book in the Crossbreed series. The book picks straight up from where Blackout finished, thankfully not dragging out the somewhat of a cliffhanger from the former installment. This book had a slightly different plot line to previous books, but the same feeling and flavour that has me already wanting the next one to be out already. Whereas the other 5 books centre around Keystone and their latest case, Book 6 really delved more heavily into the background and history of Raven and Christian as individuals and what that means for them as a couple. Don't get me wrong, there was still plenty happening like you'd expect from this author, but it focused on the drama that was surrounding the key players. If you haven't read Book 5, Blackout, you really need to before you start this one.Raven takes a hiatus from Keystone, leading Viktor to give everyone a couple of weeks off to recuperate from the high voltage events resulting from the blackout in Book 5, as well as give them time to adjust to Hunter (Shepherd's son) being around the house. Hunter was a great little, feel-good addition to the book that popped up throughout. He is bringing a lot of depth to the other characters and plays a sweet role in the Keystone family.Raven moves back home for the short term to reconnect with Crush. I loved Crush. He was a great addition to former books and we really get to know him better in Nevermore. He's abrupt, stubborn and fiercely loves Raven. Raven learns that he's in financial trouble and has borrowed money from less than reputable loan sharks who also happen to be lion shifters, making things take a turn for the worse. We get introduced to the breed world surrounding Crush and finally get to meet Switch, who some readers might remember was the handsome young man who escorted Raven to a school dance after she was stood up by some douche. Switch was a really strong character and featured regularly throughout the book. He was likeable, cute and loyal. He makes a bit of play for Raven, but very respectfully.Christian's background with Lenore is finally explained, consequently revealing a series of breadcrumbs about his past that climaxes into an explanation of why he is the way he is. While I wanted to smash Lenore's face in with an impalement stake for a lot of the book, I get why she had to be there. Be warned - there is a bit of drama with her being Christian's former love of his life and it tread very close to her being a cause for Raven and Christian's relationship to break down. While Lenore wreaked havoc by making a play for Christian, the author thankfully didn't drag this out as a love triangle or a potential 'other woman' situation. I was very appreciative that things were explained and tidied up quickly as I would have hated this and Dannika Dark is a million times better than falling for this age old plot line (which she didn't, bless her).As for Raven and Christian? The continued to be fabulous. Raven was her usual strong, kickas$ self who continued to struggle with the transition from her former human life to being a crossbreed. She had several, candid moments with Crush about her past, her feelings and her immortality, giving the book a bit of a melancholy, nostalgic feel and making Raven's character feel pretty raw as she tried to show her dad how much she loved him and apologise for where her life had taken her. Christian was delicious, as always. A slight gripe I had was that he didn't feature as much as I would have liked in the book and there wasn't too much from his point of view as Raven mostly took the reigns. Luckily the author made up for it with a few steamy scenes towards the end and, finally, a candid conversation between our two lovers about where their relationship is headed - YES! No spoilers, but they finally start to move ahead with their relationship. There was very little on the Cyrus storyline and the other members of Keystone didn't feature overly much compared to other books, with the exception of Shepherd, whose short segments about his new relationship with his son were just beautiful. One thing I LOVED in big shouty capitals? Houdini popped up a few times. I love his character and what he's bringing to the series and have really enjoyed him being in the last few books. I can't wait to see where this storyline goes. He wasn't in the book too heavily, unfortunately, but enough to tease readers with his enigmatic and strangely charismatic ways. He's the guy I hate to love. While there was no case being solved, this book gave me more substance on the characters I adore, so while it did track along a bit differently, it was still a fantastic read that fans should get a lot out of. There wasn't the extra drama that some of the former books have due to a problem being solved, but it still held my attention and I didn't want it to end. Like I said, it did deal more with Raven and Christian trying to figure out who and what they were in the grand scheme of things and what their future might be, but I really loved this angle. There wasn't too much action, but there's a scene towards the end that was freaking awesome and made me fall further in love with Keystone which I didn't even think was possible. I found that Raven made giant leaps in reconciling her past with her father to her future with Keystone. It was raw and emotional I can't flipping wait for the next book. To me, this series just keeps getting better and better with the storyline continually evolving and has firmly entrenched itself as one of my all-time favourites.

Since I'm a graduate of Texas State University, and the school is located pretty much on a river with a rather large aquatic life science department, I'm willing to say this is the best book on Texas Native Fishes. I purchased this book to research and identify fish for a native aquarium.
High quality paperback, almost hardbound, this 200+ page book provides a 3-page 27-step guide to fish identification that is a great help if you catch something you're not familiar with. All photos are clear, with precise information for each fish, including physical characteristics, what part of the state they are found, and often some extra comments. This is not a 'how to fish' book. I highly recommend this book as an accurate, easy to use pocket guide as habitat location and fish identification.
Necessary textbook
Very useful when identifying Texas species; we used this book for a college class's lab and it included everything we needed for keying out North Texas fishes
Excellent
Overall a good book, especially for the price. However, it has only a key to the families, and no key to the species found in Texas. The book also does not offer any quick ways to distinguish similar species. Some photos are great, others or poor. The range maps show only a general distribution in Texas and not specific localities, and no overall geographic distribution. Very little natural history is provided for each species. This could have easily been a 4 star book had it included a key to the species. Also, the book strangely makes no mention of the Comanche Springs pupfish.
We started saving money by catching native fish for our aquariums (within the regulations of state law). This book has been very helpful for identifying the non-game fish that most people wouldn't recognize. It helps me brag on local forums on what I caught without looking like an idiot and not accidentally bringing home threatened or endangered species.
Very informative, great for school.

TERRANCE TALKS TRAVEL: The Quirky Tourist Guide to Charleston by Terrance Zepke is a nonfiction book that covers traveling to Charleston, a historic city in America. I have read few book from the author before and I really enjoy reading it just as much as this one. The author will include everything that you need to know when you are planning to travel to Charleston. The author writes everything from how to get to Charleston by several transportations and the distance from Charleston to other places to help the reader plan their trips. The book also contains what to do in Charleston, a lot of Charlestons attraction, the tours that are being offered in the city, the best of places (restaurant, bar and where to stay and buy souveniers) and a lot more! This book is complete from A to Z to help you plan your trips down to the small town of Charleston. It is very simple and easy to read, there are few pictures from the attraction mentioned and the authors writing style is very casual and light. This book is a total must if you dont have enough time to do a research thoroughly on your own because the author included the website link to the specific info and she even included the annual events and the average temperature, this is all to help you to pack your bag.I will highly recommend this book to anyone that will visit the city and to travelers junkie out there because this one will absolutely attract your attention to the city of Charleston.
Author Terrance Zepke offers readers a glimpse into what it is like traveling to Charleston in this book: The Quirky Tourist Guide To Charleston. The chapters cover must-see places to visit like restaurants and shops - along with helpful travel tips and suggestions and more. But at the risk of revealing too much content of this book, I will say no more about that.Moving on from this book’s content and on to the discussion of the cover design, the cover shows four images of the area in and around Charleston. Personally, I would have liked the cover more if there was a person or people on the cover considering that the book centers on traveling that is, in turn, closely connected with tourism. Now moving on to what is inside The Quirky Tourist Guide To Charleston. The overall editing is clean and easy to read, because this author correctly adheres to grammar rules, for example. The writer’s tone is also approachable and chatty, personally reminding me of being with a tour guide in Charleston. Author Zepke employs a knowledgeable tone too, reflecting her research into the area.In addition, there is not traditional character development; for this book is reflecting on travel to Charleston rather than developing fictional or based on life characters. But in the sense that the author explores the area of Charleston in an interesting, easy to read kind of way, that has been accomplished here with this book.Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons already stated above.
So you want to visit the town of Charleston, South Carolina one of the oldest towns in America, and you are seeking more information? This is a great book to read. Once again Terrance Zepke takes us on an informative look of this historic town. She includes many web links for you to do more research to get the most out of your visit. Enticing photos are included of this city. Along with many museums there are a multiple haunted places you can visit. This is a delightful book that will show you how to get the most out of your adventure to Charleston. Included in this book, along with pictures and links, is a handy list of things to pack, events to see, best months to visit, and a list of her many other books. What will be your next adventure? This is definitely not a dry read and filled with lots of ways to have a fun visit. I highly recommend reading it whether or not you plan a trip.

"A grand memoir.... Bragg tells about the South with such power and bone-naked love...he will make you cry." —Atlanta Journal-Constitution"Part memoir, part confession, [this book] has everything to do with the South and nothing at all.... Like all good writing, it transcends the particulars of time and place." —Raleigh News & Observer"A record of a life that has been harrowing, cruel and yet triumphant, written so beautifully he makes the book a marvel." —Los Angeles Times"A deeply affecting book.... Bragg captures the rhythms of small-town life with grace and pathos." —Chicago Tribune

From the Author
This is a book about getting even with life.It is the story of a young woman who absorbed the cruelties of her husband, an alcoholic, haunted Korean War veteran, until she could stand it no more, then gave up her whole life for her children. By picking cotton, cleaning toilets for the gentry, doing worse, she made sure that her three surviving sons would not have to walk around ashamed, in ragged clothes. In a smaller way it is my story, the boy who climbed up her backbone and made it out of that ring of poverty and ignorance, free and clean. It is about what I did with the life she gave me, and how I tried to repay her, and how I tried--and failed so miserably--to rewrite the past. The book is set in rural northeastern Alabama, and chronicles a poor, white trash family through three generations. The first third of the book is mostly about her and him, and us, me and my brothers, as babies. It shows the agony of the death of a baby brother who did not have to die, who didn't even get a name.It also takes us with my father to Korea. He tugged me there, the last time I saw him alive, when I was just 16. The tales of terror he told me there still sit like a broken bottle in my mind. The second third is about the wonderful life she gave me, the exotic, dark places I went, taking her spirit with me, like a talisman. It takes us to Haiti, to the transvestite hookers in the Village, to death row in Angola, Louisiana. The last part is the getting even part, where a woman who had never been on a plane, never been higher than a second-story bathroom floor, travels to New York to see her son receive a Pulitzer Prize, and more. It ends with me keeping my promise to buy her a house, a real house, with my bitter victory over my dead father, and my sad defeat to the realization that no amount of brick and mortar will wall up the past, will let us, as a family, start new.I feature, briefly, an alcoholic brother who seems to have absorbed the demons that killed my father in 1976. And I admit, finally, to having absorbed them myself. On its lighter side, it is a story of vindication. People speak to my mother now, on the street. On its darker side, it is all about revenge. Failed revenge. --Rick BraggMORE FROM RICK BRAGG, ABOUT RICK BRAGG:My Grandfather on my daddy's side and my grandma on my momma's side used to try and cuss their miseries away. They could out-cuss any damn body I have ever seen. I am only an amateur cusser at best, but I inherited other things from these people who grew up on the ridges and deep in the hollows of northeastern Alabama, the foothills of the Appalachians. They taught me, on a thousand front porch nights, as a million jugs passed from hand to hand, how to tell a story. I make my living at it now, as a national correspondent for The New York Times, based in my native South (Atlanta). It was my dream to do this someday, but some things even I was afraid to dream. In 1996, I was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, for what the judges called "elegantly written stories on contemporary America." They included stories on the country sheriff who caught Susan Smith, an Alabama prison where old inmates go to die, a Mississippi washerwoman who became a national hero, and the nightmare bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. I also won the prestigious American Society of Newspaper Editor's Distinguished Writing Award, for the second time. I have won more than 40 journalism awards, including several awards that might have actually helped people. But the best thing that happened to me in 1996 was the contract for this book, which allowed me to keep a promise I had made to my mother--a woman who picked cotton, scrubbed floors and took in washing and ironing--who went 18 years without a new dress so I could have school clothes. With the advance from this book, I bought her a house, the first house she ever owned. I teach writing at the Poynter Institute for media studies, at National Writers Workshops around the country. I taught some workshops at Harvard, and several newspapers have asked me to do in-house writing workshops, including The Times. My stories are included in several "best of" collections of newspaper writing. I have written for the New York Times SundayMagazine, and others. For good or bad, I am kind of unusual for a Times man. I have been at The Times for just three years, for the first six months on Metro in New York, writing about the homeless, violence, welfare hotels, other miseries, then covered Haiti for more than two months during the worst of the killing there in the late summer and the fall of 1994. I came home to find that I had been promoted to the national desk. They sent me home, almost, to Atlanta. Before The Times, I worked briefly at The Los Angeles Times, a failed experiment, and before that as a roving national correspondent for the St. Petersburg Times. In 1992-93, I was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, the only real college I ever had. I think I was filling their white trash quota. I went just six months to Jacksonville State University, in Alabama, in the 1970s. Before the Nieman, I was the St. Petersburg Times Miami Bureau Chief, covering south Florida, Haiti, the outbreak of the Gulf War, and other balmy places. Before Florida, I was a reporter in my native Alabama, at The Birmingham News, Anniston Star, Talladega Daily Home and Jacksonville News. I wrote about cockfights, speed trap towns, serial killers, George Wallace, Bear Bryant, and Richard Petty. I was born in a small town hospital in northeastern Alabama on July 26, 1959. My momma went into labor about three-quarters of the way through the "Ten Commandments," which was showing at the Midway Drive-In. I am not making this up. I think it's in Chapter Four. Since then, I have lived in Jacksonville, Anniston and Birmingham, all in Alabama, in Clearwater, Bradenton, Miami and St. Petersburg, in Florida, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, the corner of 110th and Broadway, New York City, and now Atlanta. I spend at least a quarter of the year in New Orleans, for The Times. I am seldom at home. I am not married. If I had a dog, it would starve.

I enjoyed the book because, as good writers do, Rick in many ways transported me back to my own experiences -- in this case my own raising in Birmingham. Although I was a little better off -- not much, but a little better -- I recognized in this book my own kindred chip-on-my-shoulder drive to make good, and to reward my own parents for faithfully struggling to give me the opportunities they never had. So I think that what makes Rick's writing great, at least for me, is that he says so well what all of us would like to say and do as we look back and appreciate our parents. He perfectly captures why I and so many other Alabama men find no insult in being called a "momma's boy," at least those of us who had mothers like Rick's. I only wish that I had Rick's ability to write my own tribute to my mother good enough to publish for all the world to see. Of course, Rick, as I'm sure you know, the best present you ever gave your mother was not the house, but this book.
There are so many of us who have been transplanted from the North to the South. Few, if any of us understand the new culture that we attempt to adopt. Rather many of us try to reform it so it closer resembles what we left behind. This story explains that culture so well that it helps those of us who are transplants want to accept more than change our new homes. Plus, as a mother, I really appreciated the author's devotion to his mother. Enlightening read!
I can feel the hot sun. I can feel the ice cold springs. I can feel the speed of the car, motorcycle or vehicle blow my hair. I can smell the sweat of hard work and taste the fresh tomatoes. I live in the South near Jacksonville, FL where this author went to school. Being born in 1947 in the South means you lived through segregation, voting issues, school and lunchroom sitdowns if you survived the nuclear bomb in your personal bomb shelter. Rick Bragg personifies all five senses of the era, the language (likker is one of my favorites), plus touch, mental, and physical. I lived with black and white tvs and rabbit ears and even little tubes that a neighbor could fix. I remember my grandparents getting an "indoor" bathroom. This book is a memory massage that melted my soul. Thanks to Rick Bragg. Keep on telling it like it is.
What took me so long? I've been following Rick Bragg in Southern Living Magazine for years. Truthfully, for quite awhile now its the only thing I read in the magazine. My husband knew I was a fan of his so he bought me his latest book for Christmas and I read it from front to back in a sitting. So, I finally went hunting for more and found this on my Kindle. Again, I read this from beginning to end but not in one sitting. I wanted to stretch it out. To make it last. I cried and laughed and cried again. In the end I felt it was the most beautiful love letter to a Mother I have ever read. He may not have meant for it to be only that because it seemed it was also a love letter to his big brother. Yes, maybe, just maybe, his Dad. I hope my children feel the same way about me. In the end, that's all that really counts. Isn't it?
If you haven’t read Rick Bragg, what are you waiting for? There are few writers today who can turn as beautiful a phrase, capture a reader’s imagination, or bring back images of an earlier life like Bragg does. Yet he is commonplace and earthy, his writing carries a twang, and his opinions, mostly about the superiority of Southern life, are rampant. It’s clear he doesn’t much appreciate effete Northerners who have never eaten grits. He’s a Southern boy.I suspect he is a true redneck, as we traditionally understand it. But the cornpone dissolves into singing prose when he settles in to inscribe his magic words. “All Over but the Shoutin’†is his runaway best selling memoir, published in 1997, and winner of innumerable awards and high praise from both readers and literary critics. It will both exhilarate you and leave you in a sobbing heap, sometimes at the same time. It’s the story of his childhood in Alabama and his meandering journey to becoming a legendary journalist. It’s filled with stories about things and people that influenced his life. Mostly it’s a love song about his mother who raised Bragg and his two brothers without a father. The book started him on the road to fame and is his best seller. His mother, still living, is the lifeline he unapologetically clings to. Best not chide him for it unless you want your butt kicked.Bragg has been a lot of places and seen a lot of things in his career. Most of his recollections wear heavily on him. He recounts them with clarity and neither turns away from the horrific nor fails to express the misery that hurts his heart. He is a man with a compassionate soul who’s unafraid to share his feelings. But it is the poetic beauty of his love and determination to honor his mother that propels this book. Her entire life has been filled with heartache, grinding poverty, three boys who constantly bedevil her, crippling insecurity, and constant sorrow. Bragg recognizes his contribution to her misery, but has always wanted to set it straight, and expresses his frustration with his inability to make her life warmer as she ages. His words rings like a bell. There were times when I laughed and others when a stray tear wet my cheek. Many times I simply caught myself staring at the wall absorbing some moving passage, my finger stuck in the book so I wouldn’t lose my place.Don’t miss this book. It’s a classic memoir with all the elements that are sure to soften even the most callous mind-set. It’s not a tearjerker. It’s a bright light that illuminates glorious writing, a light so bright it makes your eyes water.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES
OMG everyone should read this book if you are into Americana, rags-to-riches, love of family. Couldn't put it down and finished in 2 days. Mailed it to my best friend who also loved it. It will make you laugh and cry--really. Rick Bragg is a gifted writer, and I appreciate his way of thinking, and descriptive prose. God bless him and his wonderful mom, who sacrificed much.

This is actually a great book, but the print job is terrible. I have all of Massad Akoob's books and the man is eminently knowledgeable. The book is very timely with excellent information. He is definitely one of the top authorities on concealed carry. I'd give this book a 3.5 if I could; 5 for great information, 2 for terrible print job on the cheapest paper imaginable. It could only be worse if it was printed on toilet paper. The paper is so cheap it makes the details of what is supposed to be illustrated in many of the black and white photos difficult or impossible see. I've been a publisher myself and there is no excuse for using paper this cheap.
I am very much enjoying this book. It uses a good combination of print telling a concept and photos to illustrate what Mas is talking about. This is the second one of his books I'm reading and I'll have to read more in the future. This man has a wealth of experience and a lot of good common sense.
I had hopes for a bit more new information, but, as Ayoob says in his introduction, this is to provide you with more of the subtle details. Major, gotta have details, are covered in previous editions. This one is more on how to apply them smoothly.
Unfortunately, this is a rather lame Vol II from my perspective. There is simply not enough new information to warrant buying this book and too much of it seems like nothing more than filler.
takes vol 1 to another level, there are of course repeated stuff for those who forgot or missed vol 1. read carefully as many good tips.
Massad Ayoob is one of my influences as a Cop.
Great information and a good follow up to his last two editions
very well written and seems very informative

About the Author
Christopher Poindexter is a bohemian poet who began writing poetry on a rebellious trip to California when he was 18. He considers himself more of an observer, trying to make sense of the human condition in all of its grit and glory. Being very inspired by both the darkness and the light, he aims to share an ultimate truth in all of his writing; though we all have our dances with demons, our hearts haunted by loss, by fear, it is the light that always beckons us. Calls out our name in even the darkest hours. This is why we must love one another. Because we are not alone in this.

Old Soul Love is indescribable. The author is a gifted poet, creator, and above all an amazing human. Pointdexter writes with such intensity, emotion, and authenticity that I am moved not only by his writing but by his spirit in the truest form. He writes of love and loss, his understanding of self and being connected to the human race, and having emotions so powerfully consuming that at times, feeling everything at once is best balanced only by feeling nothing at all. Christopher Pointdexter is a romantic but also a realist ... he is dark and he is light ...all in One. However for me , the author takes my breath away in a select few he writes of for the woman he has loved most with his entire soul. HIs expressions of love are best described through a series of beautiful metaphors, symbolism, and dreams that without a doubt leave their mark. I recommend this to all... especially for those who feel so much as they navigate the waters of being sensitive (and yet strong) in a world of hardened souls. Christopher Pointdexter is profoundly talented author and his books Lavender and Naked Human are beautiful reads as well. A treasure for sure.
I am pretty sure that a lot of the poems/quotes in this book have been taken and re-printed from his other books (which I own). Found that a bit disappointing as I was hoping for more new material. However, I will always love this author and the way he writes and thinks.
Anything by Christopher Poindexter is a must read! His poetry will make you feel things you've never felt. I've only read a few pages, but already, my heart is overwhelmed with such beautiful words. Can't wait to finish it!
This book is amazing. I discovered Christopher on Instagram. His words touch my soul and inspire me. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. I'll be getting more to give as Christmas presents. Love every page.
I have all of his books and this one is the best yet. Christopher's words ring true in my heart, full of yearning and love and passion. Beautiful and moving. I highly recommend it.
My collection of Christopher Poindexter works are growing! These are all valuable treasures, and Old Soul Love did not disappoint. Check it out! I consumed it in one sitting, like a shot of burning liquor, and have since gone back and savored bits of it for the delicacy it is. The way that Christopher speaks of love and his personal/or observational experience of humanity (and himself) is not like poppy, bubble-gum drama, but rather a jazzy, mature, dark red wine. Cheers to him!
This was a great read that I related to a lot. I'm a poet as well and has inspired me to write. Been fueling motivation for me. I love the way he speaks of love, his sensitivity, his adoration of his grandmother. His words are very soft but raw at the same time. Definitely has a fan, looking forward to his future work and will go and read the past work of his that I missed. Keep up the great work Chris! 🌹
Such a stunning collection of pieces. I enjoyed this journey very much. Excellent author, excellent collection.
