I fully endorse the existing feedback "This book is a Clear and Straight forward guide for this exam with good and simple examples to try out." and this is true for all the study guides written by Matthew M Morris.
Concise and to the point book about the new features of Oracle 12c. The book can also be used to refresh your Oracle 11g new features knowledge and overall daily DBA tasks. Comparatively, few new features were added in 12c compared to the pervious Oracle editions. As I have shifted to SQL Server DBA jobs in the past 3 years, this book helped me to refresh the new features of Oracle 11g material which I went through to prepare for Oracle 11g OCP upgrade exam. Thanks Matthew.
This is not a good book for exam preparation. Not recommend.
I read it to the half so far and enjoyed the information and details as a study guide, it does not contain all details you need from every asect or new feature but it points you on the right direction. Overall I liked it exactly as the name says, a study guide to give an overall of the new features and in some of them it gets deeper, and on the others it only gives a breaf explanation. I recommend as a complement, but you should look for more sources and practice to pass the exam I suppose.
The sections on Core DBA definitely prepares you for the exam questions, as the questions for that section can be from a wide range of information.
What can I say? Concise and to the point.
I highly recommend this book.I upgraded my OCP (certificate) to 12c by reading this book. Several years ago, I upgraded my OCP to 11g by reading the corresponding book ("Study Guide for 1Z0-050" by the same author). Why have I continued coming back to buy this series of books? Because they are short and sweet. Well, not exactly SHORT, but this book is less than half size of other books with the similar title. Admittedly we are all too busy nowadays, and there are too many other more interesting things to do in our lives than studying for certification. My goal is to spend less efforts to get more results. If it's your goal too, this book is for you.I would say this book contains about 85% of the answers for test questions in a systematic way. Of course it's not enough to just depend on this book alone (or any other ONE book alone). You need to cross reference Oracle documents, Google related info, experiment in your database, practice test simulator, and so on. But I found myself spent more time on this book than any other resources. From my experience, this book has one of the highest ROI (Return Of Investment) -- in terms of my time (not to mention the money).
This book is an excellent guide to prepare for 12c ocp upgrade certification exam .however it cover only 12c upgrade portion only and one need to refer to other book for general DBA part preparation

Review
“Splendidly assembled . . . familiar, funny, cranky . . . chronicling [Vonnegut’s] life in real time.”—Kurt Andersen, The New York Times Book Review “[This collection is] by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and mundane. . . . Vonnegut himself is a near-perfect example of the same flawed, wonderful humanity that he loved and despaired over his entire life.”—NPR “Congenial, whimsical and often insightful missives . . . one of [Vonnegut’s] very best.”—Newsday “Letters’ greatest gift is the gift of all such anthologies: It humanizes an icon. . . . The fallibility and kindness of the real person shine through clearer in his more personal writing, separating the author from the oeuvre in a way that makes both richer.”—The A.V. Club“There are authors we admire or envy, but there are just a few we really, really love, and Vonnegut is one of them.”—The Washington Post“These letters display all the hallmarks of Vonnegut’s fiction—smart, hilarious and heartbreaking.”—The New York Times Book Review“Smart, funny, and very compassionate. Reading this is a must for fans of the author.”—The Christian Science Monitor“Old correspondence from even famous writers can be a bore, but not Vonnegut’s. He was always at his best when adopting an intimate, down-to-earth tone, and the same animating force that made him a brilliant storyteller is evident again and again in these letters. . . . This is a frank and funny book, offering rich insights into Vonnegut’s character and career.”—The Dallas Morning News “This miraculous volume of selected letters provides a moving and revelatory portrait of the famed author of Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat’s Cradle. . . . Fans will find the collection as spellbinding as Vonnegut’s best novels, and casual readers will discover letters as splendid in their own way as those of Keats.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A literary treasure . . . this collection of letters—many of which have never been published—rightly can be viewed as the autobiography Vonnegut never wrote.”—The Oklahoman“[An] intimate, far-ranging monologue by one of the 20th century’s funniest, sharpest, darkest minds . . . it’s difficult not to marvel at Vonnegut’s depth, warmth and wit. . . . Together, [the letters] give a comprehensive sketch of his personality. They show who he was and who he became.”—The Kansas City Star “[Reveals] Vonnegut’s passions, annoyances, loves, losses, mind and heart . . . The letters stand alone—and stand tall, indeed. . . . Vonnegut’s most human of hearts beats on every page.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Bearing all the canny observations and sardonic witticisms that distinguished his most famous works [the letters reveal] fascinating insights into Vonnegut’s private thoughts and inspirations. . . . This is a volume fans will treasure.”—Booklist “As these remarkable letters reveal, [Vonnegut] mixes hard-edged ideas with the buoyancy of imagination and humor. His best work makes us both gasp and laugh—wishing the fire from the Roman candle would never end.”—The Plain Dealer“Letters mirrors some of Vonnegut’s best fiction . . . wry, witty, and eminently quotable. Perhaps more importantly, his letters reflect a genuineness and humanity that always lived just beneath the surface of Vonnegut’s fiction.”—The Financialist “Wit, aphorism, charm, wisdom and joshery abound here. . . . Vonnegut’s voice was as unique as his art. It is ominpresent here.”—Buffalo News“Everything that’s familiar in [Vonnegut's] fiction is in the letters—he’s funny, caustic, sentimental, profound, melancholy, angry, and always himself.”—The Oregonian “Tirelessly compiling letters and manuscripts from over seven decades of correspondence with his mentors, publishers, and even a school board director who banned his works, Wakefield finally gives the reader a sense of Vonnegut’s life without time travel or aliens to mystify and universalize his emotions. . . . Vonnegut is stripped of any possible self-promotion and his true affection and unselfishness shows. . . . a deep and true portrayal.”—The Daily Californian “At last: the Vonnegut book readers of the late modern master have been waiting for. . . . It’s his voice again, live as ever, clear and unvarnished, with the pop and crackle of a hardwood fire on an Autumn night. . . . For those of us that miss Kurt Vonnegut, it makes this collection a gift. Pick up this book, it’s like having him by your side.”—NUVOFrom the Hardcover edition.

Perhaps I am wearing rose colored glasses when I read this, with KV being my favorite author, but this book will show you how the man thought throughout the decades in a way that no biographer can ever capture. His letters flourish with wit, humor, insecurity, grandiose notions, and indignation. He outlines his struggles to become a literary giant, while not understanding how he achieved this title. You actually can picture him at the typewriter and share in the "mood of the moment" of his thoughts, written to a wide variety of people through the 60 years that this testaments span.As a true fan of his literature, you won't be sorry for this purchase as you revisit books long past, and my guess is that after reading this you will be dusting off Breakfast of Champions and Cat's Cradle to fully understand what you have just enjoyed reading. Finally you will receive a sense of American history and where the world was, is and is perhaps heading towards. Just loved it and snorted this book up like a cocaine addict.5 stars.
It's rare that a book's introduction makes me speak out loud while reading. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't reading aloud. I just found myself saying "Wow" and "Huh!" and "I didn't know that!" out loud, to myself, as I read this beautiful book. As an artist, I found the cover photo and art and even the fonts of the chapter headings both stunning and a fond visit back to the Seventies. But as a reader, and a passionate re-reader of writers I love, I was intrigued and fascinated by the introduction- written with passionate restraint by Dan Wakefield.Honestly? I rarely read more than one page of book introductions, as they usually reveal more about the writer of the Introduction than the person the Introducer is introducing. But this is happily not the case with Dan Wakefield. I love Wakefield's books, especially "Expect A Miracle" and "Spiritually Incorrect." Actually, now that I think about it, I probably only began to read this Introduction because it was written by Dan Wakefield! His clear, concise and empathetic prose informed me deeply about Kurt Vonnegut and his influences, his family and his artistic struggles to have his iconic and iconoclastic voice published and read.In fact, a unique and welcome addition to this book is the introduction of each era of letters- which smartly and helpfully places us in the context of Vonnegut's life when he wrote the letters and to whom he was writing. It's such a simple technique but begs the question of why this isn't done more with published letters of notable people... and in this book the chapter introductions serve to create more comprehension of Vonnegut's life and how he dealt with family, friends, associates, success and disappointment. Not only did I feel I was learning so much more about Vonnegut, in almost a biographical way, but this book served to make me want to hunt down a biography of Vonnegut-- but only if it's as well written as this one.The mark of a good book is one that inspires me to read more. Kurt Vonnegut's Letters not only makes me want to read more Vonnegut but it also makes me want to go back and re-read my treasured Dan Wakefield books.Great winter read. Stay inside, get cozy on a couch under a blanket and disappear into the mind of a great man as commemorated by another great man.
I'm a big Vonnegut fun and even visited the KV Library in Indianapolis so anything he writes is going to be a joy for me. Some of his letters are simply wonderful where he writes about how any work of art is one half of the conversation (what the artist said) and the other half is what the observer says. Some letters are stinging and others witty. There are also a few others that you might not have the right amount of background to fully appreciate (sort of like the old joke...."you had to be there"). He professed no love for his former son-in-law, Geraldo Rivera and the struggles of keeping a marriage together and with wanting to be closer to his children. He writes to people about book banning and you get more insight into what he was thinking at the time of some of his work. It is a relatively quick read and I'd recommend it to fans of KV.

LOVE THIS BOOK!While I was born in Southern California and raise in Southern Maine, I moved south as soon as I was able. This book is hilarious, insightful and explained so much of what I have experienced living in the deep south. What a great sense of humor the authors have. The book made me realize that while Southern mothers may have a list of rules they live by and instill in there daughters (and sons), "the rules" were very similar to the many rules lessons my grandmother and her many friends instilled in me "up North". I may be a damned Yankee, but this was a wonderful book and helped me to understand a number of social encounters I have had while living in the South. A very enjoyable, funny, and insightful book which made me realize my upbringing had more in common with the South than I had realized. And yes the recipes are to die for. Thank you so much for sharing. If you are from any other part of the country and would like a good chuckle and learn about the wonderful culture of the South....READ THIS BOOK!
more of a recipe book written with humor
My sisters and I have laughed and laughed over this! We are daughters of a Southern Mother!
Book arrived promptly, as described. Have not had an opportunity to read it yet. But it looks good by the cover (although one is not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, right?)
Mothers are so much smarter than than their daughters know. Unfortunately, they don’t figure this out until they’re grown and have their own children. The book hits all the right chords in a really humorous way!
I ordered one copy of this and then ordered five more to give to friends for birthday gifts. It's a very cute book and I really like the recipes that are included. I've ordered multiple copies of two other books by this author (BEING DEAD IS NO EXCUSE and one for brides--can't remember the title) and recommend both of them as well. Very clever--lots of fun.
The authors of this series of Southern Lady books are very entertaining. Is it really this way in the South? Maybe, maybe not, but it does help you understand the mind set and why some things happen the way they do. My daughter is a northern transplant to the south and loved reading this book.
This a bit repetitious, much more loose (needs tighter editing) than the authors' "Being Dead Is No Excuse." Still it is a hoot and absolutely true presentation of we Delta women and our Mothers. A great gift for Yankees and your gal pals in other regions of our Great Country.

From Booklist
Reviewed with Cheri J. Meiners' Share and Take Turns.PreS-Gr. 1. From the Learning to Get Along series, these colorful books encourage children to learn social skills. In Listen an African American boy explains what listening means: keeping quiet, watching the person who talks, thinking about what is being said, and asking questions when he doesn't understand. He also talks about using those skills in the classroom and at home. Similarly, in Share a red-haired girl learns techniques for sharing, then shows how she shares and takes turns when playing at home with her sister and friends. Each book ends with the child feeling good about using his or her new skills. The bright line-and-wash illustrations feature multiracial groups of children engaged in familiar activities. The writing is purposeful, but it is also practical in approach and sensitive to the problems and feelings of young children. A good choice for teachers seeking books that reinforce familiar classroom messages. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is the second book in the Learning to Get Along series that we have purchased for my son. He's four and recently started preschool. Before now, he's never been in any sort of daycare facility, since I work from home. We expected him to be excited about preschool and to mind as well as he does at home. Boy, were we in for a rude awakening. Everything went downhill after the first day. We got reports from his teacher that he was crying, whining, hitting other children, refusing to participate and even hit his teacher at one point. This was such a far cry from the sweet, loving child I knew at home that my first reaction was to blame the teacher. That's terrible, I know, but he had never acted this way before. After some consideration and a meeting with his teacher, I was finally able to accept that the problem was my boy was having difficulty adjusting to a social setting after spending so much time at home, with me.I stumbled upon the Learning to Get Along series of books by accident and I couldn't be happier. We started out with Know and Follow Rules and were so impressed by the changes in my son that I immediately bought Listen and Learn. He studied the illustrations carefully, including the look on the children's faces while I read it to him and pointed out what the children were doing (like sitting quietly in a group, focusing on the task at hand, not yelling). I think he had such a difficult time at first because he honestly didn't understand what was expected of him. This book helped to show him how to act in school. It hasn't changed him overnight, but there have been definite improvements. I can use examples from the book to help him understand why he's getting in trouble at school and to help redirect his behavior. There are also several pages in the pack for parents. Suggestions on how to explain the contents in the book to your children, games that will help them learn and different strategies to help them follow rules. It still takes work, but I couldn't be happier with this book, or the others we've purchased in the series.
I've purchased several of these books. Since teaching kids is all about repeating things, I thought reinforcing lessons like this at story time would be helpful. As a parent, I don't know what you're looking for out of this book. A moral lesson? A teaching moment? A magic cure for bad behavior? If it's the latter, it's not in this book. However, the fact that you're looking for a book to help your kid says a lot about your character as a parent, in my opinion. My kid has severe ADHD and needs social boundaries and rules repeated over and over for them to sink in (even more than the average kid already does). We even did PCIT together last summer to prepare him better for the classroom. If you have a kid with behavior/learning issues, I highly recommend these. He identified with the kids in the books, they are cartoon-like yet realistic, and the kids respond how real kids do in classroom situations. We read 3 books at bedtime and most nights I include a behavior/lesson book like this. They even have great sections in the back on how to talk to your kids about the lessons in the book.
My son is 3 1/2 and was having a hard time listening at school and at home. I found this book on amazon. He wanted to read this every night for like two weeks and boy did it make a difference! He started getting great reports from his teachers and we noticed a difference. I ended up buying every book in this series. They are by far his favorite books and mine.
So simply and intentionally written AND our 4 year old likes the stories, understands the lessons and even applies the concepts! Five stars for practical and effective parenting help!
I got this book base on the rewiews, but I'm disappointed... It's a great book parents or teachers can use to prepare kids for classrooms expectations. There is only two pages about listening at home "At home, I listen and talk with my family. We talk about our day. We make plans. We solve problems. We learn together. We show we are talking and listening."
I love all of Meiners' books. They are very useful for teaching and shaping up various social and behavioral skills. I use them with my students as a special education teacher, and with my own little ones as a mother.
These books are great for teaching social skills to preschool and kindergarten! perfect amount of words on each page. Love the pictures and graphics. Very well done!!
Used this for my Aspergers child. He was completely drawn to the facial expressions in the book. Had to adapt the story line a bit to fit his particular situation but easy to do with the illustrations. Very pleased with this as we have to be very literal with Aspergers kids - everything is so literal and this help explain to them the consequences of their actions.

Review
Praise for The Runaway Species “The authors look at art and science together to examine how innovations―from Picasso’s initially offensive paintings to Steve Jobs’s startling iPhone―build on what already exists and rely on three brain operations: bending, breaking and blending. This manifesto of sorts shows how both disciplines foster creativity.†―The Wall Street Journal “Unravels the interplay of art, neuroscience and evolution, while celebrating the special thing that is human innovation.†―Entrepreneur "Which inventions have had the most impact―and why? What can they teach us about game-changing innovation? And how will science and technology revolutionize our lives next? The rest of The Runaway Species sheds light on these issues … bolstered by delightful visuals." ―Harvard Business Review “The Runaway Species approach[es] creativity scientifically but sensitively, feeling its roots without pulling them out.†―The Economist "A lively exploration of the software our brains run in search of the mother lode of invention… The Runaway Species is beautifully produced, illustrated and written. It sweeps the reader through examples from engineering, science, product design, music and the visual arts to trace the roots of creative thinking to three key mental skills: bending, breaking and blending.†―Nature "With the pleasing pace of an extended essay, the book offers surprises and insights at every turn, and the authors argue convincingly that basic strategies inform most creative behavior. . . . Essential―and highly pleasurable―reading for anyone who cares about ideas and innovation." ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "The Runaway Species is a simple and delightful read ― no science knowledge required. And in a rare triumph, the fact that this book was written by two authors never got in the way of making me feel like someone was telling me a story or delivering a thirteen-chapter TED talk. " ―Cooper Square Review "Art and science converge in this beautiful collaboration. . . . Divided into three parts, this inquiry covers a complicated set of connected topics in an engaging and surprisingly accessible way. . . . Packed with vivid images, countless examples, and fun facts that will leave readers eager to discuss it with friends, this is a refreshing and thought-provoking book that captures both the wonder of science and the beauty of the human spirit." ―Booklist "An intriguing and riveting mélange of perspectives that successfully delineates what creativity and innovation are about. It is an outstanding and inspirational volume that will have a broad and global appeal. It will categorically transport the reader into the past and the future fusing them together as one scientific structure, constituting an electrifying and enlightening scholarly reading." ―The Inquisitive Mind "A paean to the ingenuity of the human species, a description of the anatomy of creativity and a rallying cry to cultivate our skills for the benefit of our collective future." ―Tes.com "Brandt and Eagleman have written an exuberant book about creativity. If you were a fan of James Burke’s brilliant Connections, or perhaps of Don Norman’s ruminations on design, there’s a similarly sumptuous buffet of brain candy here on which to pig out." ―Neo.life “Readers familiar with David Eagleman’s writing will encounter the clever analogies that typify his style. Co-author Anthony Brandt, a professor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, ads rich texture and scope to their speculations. It is not obvious what NASA and Picasso have in common. Nor what flamboyant hairstyles, bicycles, or stadium designs share. But the answers seem obvious once the links are pointed out.†―Richard E. Cytowic, New York Journal of Books "It’s a belter of a book for anyone with an interest in neuroscience, creativity or education... Understanding ourselves and our creativity is a journey that also helps us to understand what makes us human. The Runaway Species not only makes the complex readable, but also opens a fascinating world that exists between predictability and surprise." ―Business Hitchhiker

WHO IT'S FOR: Scientists, writers, inventors, artists, musicians, and eternally curious folks who could use an extra shot of creativityWHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: How do exceptionally creative people -- like Leonardo da Vinci, Bach, Chopin, Einstein, Edison, Picasso, Steve Jobs -- come up with and execute their ideas? What makes the book special are vignettes of the other 200+ artists, scientists, composers and engineers you *haven’t* heard of yet, and all the cool ideas they’ve come up with as they “bend, break and blend†old ideas to create new ones. The book’s fluid writing style and 200 illustrations make for fun, fast reading. Some essential new concepts I learned:• “Skeuomorphs†are “features that imitate the design of what has come before.†Nothing is 100% new.• Every emerging billion-dollar industry is already 10 yrs old• To come up with great ideas, embrace error so you can proliferate lots of options• The 20% Rule: the brain seems to prefer visual stimulus of 20% complexity• The greatest creators (eg Picasso, Edison) were just insanely prolific. The more stuff you make, the more likely that some of it will be great.• Let young minds embrace the arts: “This is because the arts, due to their overtness, are the most accessible way to teach the basic tools of innovation.â€WHAT IT’S NOT: Although it can teach you much about the process of innovation, this book’s not a creativity how-to book per se. For that, I recommend Edward de Bono’s classic Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step by Step.WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: The dozens of fascinating stories of perseverance, ingenuity, and breakthrough – e.g. self-healing concrete, carbon-fiber violins, or James Dyson’s 5,127 vacuum prototypes (!) – demystify innovation, humanize it, and just might catalyze a world-changing story of your own.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil, Happiness Engineer, TEDx presenter of "Awaken Creative Genius" and author of Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine
As a musician, writer, business person, and teacher, I couldn't put RUNAWAY down! From the first page to the last, I was captivated. Problem solvers and creatives are always looking for inventive ways to stretch beyond our limits, and for the encouragement to take risks. Historically, how has creativity affected humanity? Where are examples of people using imaginative resourcefulness to take us to places yet discovered? How can we inspire our children and give them permission to be curious, to explore, and to invent? Bravo to you Anthony Brandt and David Eagleman for your diligent research and delightful read!!!
This spring the Alabama School of Math and Science decided we were going to have a book for our entire community to read and discuss in the new school year. This is the book we chose. We are very excited with our choice! Eagleman and Brandt have written a book about creativity which is accessible to adults and teens. It is inspiring, positive and makes you think. We will be using it in the classroom and boardroom. There is something for everyone here to chew on. Their approach to creativity means the playing field is level and open to everyone. And what more could educators want than to have teens believe that the impossible is possible, there are no wrong turns and one should always look at a problem from a myriad of angles. I'm telling you this book is a great place to start a thousand conversations starting with two little words..."What if..."I will also let you know that the customer rep from the publisher (catapult) has been absolutely amazing!
Thanks for sending me this book! There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it came in mint condition and in good time.I ordered this book because it’s the common reading for my university and I wanted to read it so I could relate to the incoming freshman since I’m working Freshman Preview Week. I have no complaints about this, but the book DOES say it’s an advanced copy which might’ve been good to state in the item description. (Sometimes advanced copies haven’t been proofread ðŸ‘ðŸ») I’m excited to get to reading!
A beautiful blend of science and composition; where creativity abounds and helps us understand who we are. I have been a fan of David Eagleman since happening upon his PBS airing of "The Brain," then quickly bought all books that he published. His partnership with Anthony Brandt has made so many science and art pieces of life become so much more accessible. Highly recommended.
This book was an absolutely delightful read! I loved all of the examples, anecdotes, and COLOR pictures throughout the book. They draw from a dizzying array of fields and disciplines to illustrate their point, which is that creativity is a human universal that touches all parts of our lives. They also make a strong case for focusing more intentionally on cultivating creativity in our schools. In the 21st century, this is proving to be an essential skill that we ignore at our peril. Highly recommended read!
Excellent book. I was asked to read it at work and really enjoyed it.The book discuss creativity from both the science and art aspect of it.. This is not a connection often made about but the explanation are clear and easy to understand. The chapter on creativity at work and at school should be mandatory reading
A good read decorated with rich examples from arts and science how creativity worked up to now i highly recommend this book to interested people

Amazon.com Review
And the Sea Is Never Full is Elie Wiesel's memoir of the period between 1969 and the present. Wiesel, an esteemed writer (his Night is among the greatest memoirs of the Holocaust) and political activist, begins the book remembering a challenge given to himself at age 40: "I will become militant. I will teach, share, bear witness. I will reveal and try to mitigate the victims' solitude." He defends dissidents in the Soviet Union; draws attention to the atrocities of Cambodia and Bosnia; and fights apartheid in South Africa. He attacks Holocaust deniers, stands with Lech Walesa in Poland, visits Albania as a representative of President Clinton, and wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel's tragic boyhood compelled him to work very hard to love the world. He has learned to do so, and this memoir, like all of his best writing, teaches its reader to love the world while looking directly at its greatest terrors. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly
This second volume in Wiesel's memoirs (the first was All Rivers Run to the Sea) isAas a memoir by this Jewish novelist, activist and Nobel Peace laureate must beAa moral accounting, of himself and of those he has known. And he spares no one, from Israeli U.N. ambassador Abba Eban to French president Fran?ois Mitterrand, in an honest report on how he believes they have let him down. The tale resumes here with Wiesel's marriage in 1969, at the age of 40, and follows the author through his most active years as a goad to the world's memory (of the Holocaust) and conscience (in the realm of human rights, especially those of Soviet Jewry). The events are often dramatic: one of the book's climaxes comes in 1985, when it was announced that President Reagan would visit Bitburg, a German cemetery where SS members are buried, and Wiesel had to decide whether to receive from Reagan's hands the Congressional Gold Medal. Courageous as ever, he accepted the awardAand used the occasion to speak truth to power, urging Reagan to change his plans for the trip. Wiesel is equally forthright about the political maneuvers and infighting that led him to resign from chairing the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council before its task, building a museum, was even begun. Despite the failings of humanity, which he relates so well, he remains optimistic about the future. Wiesel's writing is as fluid and evocative as ever, and his storytelling skills turn the events of his own life into a powerful series of morality plays. No one who cares about ethical imperatives should miss this book. Photos not seen by PW. (Dec.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Elie Wiesel is a writer I have read and will read gratefully with pleasure for he offers what I understand is the very substance of the meaning of life: his love of words and a conscientious use of them, a deep perception of pain, sorrow and experience, a sense of responsibility towards others together with his faith in a God he loves in spite of his apparent failings, I enjoy his deep appreciation of joy and happiness shared with others as part of Jewish religious rituals.
Love this book very interested

Flocks is one of the most powerful works I’ve read… …It’s remarkable in that it avoids judgement and preachiness in her handling of what are generally perceived as extremely sensitive subjects... ...a searingly honest piece of work. ― Comics Beat(Nichols) brings an instantly apparent, appealing, and accessible intensity of emotion and craft to whatever she’s doing, in whatever vein. ― The Comics JournalThe intimacy of a mini-comic that deals with an issue close to the heart of the author and reader can make for powerful reading… …My own personal experience came later than it did for Nichols, but I can still feel the pain and fear on every page of her comic as though it were my own. ― Panel PatterNichols's incredibly empathetic and humane autobio series about the various groups that have had an impact on their life reaches an almost unbearable point of agony and then resolves in an unexpected but remarkably hopeful way... ...After extending empathy, compassion, understanding and the benefit of the doubt to everyone else, Nichols finally gave it to themself. The joy and radiance in Nichols's line at this point fairly bursts off the page. ― High-Low

Flocks is an amazing visual journey through all the angst of growing up, but somehow finding our way....L. Nichols has an uncanny ability to translate emotions to his drawings, making that reason enough to read Flocks. The book had a nice rhythm that reflects life. Sometimes life is a quagmire that you have to gather yourself to break out of, and sometimes life hits you at the rapid fire pace and you can catch the wave or tumble around in the wash. The book left me with a hopeful feeling for the resiliency of people, and the importance of friends and community, and motivation to check in with all my friends and reminisce.
I don't think I've read anything before that so nicely combined the themes of:- needing to get away from a restrictive community to figure out how to live a good life- needing the strength and support from that community to learn and achieveLife isn't simple, it's complicated. This book is a quick read and helps you understand how one person navigated life's complexity.
Logan’s creativity and genius shines through in Flocks. I read it within an hour and came away with a “wow†moment. The art is highly impressive and depicts his journey very thoroughly. Well done Logan.
*** Trigger warning for homophobia, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders. **L. Nichols was born in Louisiana (some time in the mid-to-late-1970s, if the rad TMNT reference is any indication!) and assigned female (“Lauraâ€) at birth. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist community, L. always felt different; an outcast, a freak, a sinner.Throughout his childhood and teen years, L. tried to suppress his attraction to girls – and was further confounded by the occasional crushes he developed on boys. While he enjoyed some parts of the church experience – the emphasis on faith, the sense of fellowship, and the feeling that there are things bigger than oneself – his church’s virulent homophobia and adherence to rigid gender roles alienated L. and led to isolation, depression, and self-harm.But whereas L.’s community failed him on one front, it succeeded on another: despite his being labeled “female,†L.’s family and teachers encouraged him to pursue his love of science and technology, culminating in a Master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab. It was during his college years that L. pinpointed the reason for the animosity he felt toward his body, and decided to transition.FLOCKS is L.’s memoir, told in graphic novel format. The vehicle through which L. chooses to tell his story perfectly encapsulates the many contradictions in his life: while STEM majors aren’t typically considered artsy or creative, L. is indeed a talented artist. His sad little rag doll depiction of himself is at once whimsical and rather heartbreaking (doubly so when we witness stuffing fall out of self-inflicted cuts on his legs). Given all he’s been through, L.’s upbeat, optimistic attitude is downright uplifting. (And I typically consider myself an Oscar the Grouch type, so that’s quite a compliment coming from my neck of the dump.)While the main thrust of the story is L.’s burgeoning sexuality and exploration of his gender identity, he tackles a number of other serious topics as well: his parents’ acrimonious divorce; the pressure of choosing a major and settling on a career path, post-graduation; polyamory; eating disorders; self-harm; depression; binge drinking; an appreciation of nature and the natural world; and the impact of community and in-group/out-group identity on one’s sense of self. It’s an engaging, beautiful story, in both form and content. There’s a little bit of repetition of themes and ideas early on (and not between chapters, i.e. to string them together, but within the same chapters), which does detract from the story. Even so, it’s a must-read, and not just because it’s more or less a one of a kind story, at least at this point in time. (Dear publishers, please give us more of this! Kay thanks bye.)
What I found to be the standout of this graphic novel was the author's repetition of showing us their interpretation of the unseen feelings they experienced through life. Its a very well illustrated book and the writing is very personal. An excellent queer memoir throughout, I hope this story reaches many.
