DK Top 10 guides are fabulous references, especially for short trips where one has to prioritize in order to maximize vacation time. The pictures are a nice addition to the book and most of the lists are helpful. As with any list that ranks items/places/people, it is highly subjective to individual taste. Nevertheless, this book is still useful to plan your trip to Vegas.Being a little, short book, this guide isn't as comprehensive as other books. This guide is short on good dining tips, which I would recommend online food forums or websites anyway. Also, this book is short on the practical information that other books include in the normal appendix section. Some of the information is outdated, which misled me to an attraction that no longer existed when I was in LV. Specifically, I walked all the way to the Hilton to check out the Star Trek Experience attraction, only to find out at the end of a 3-mile trek, that the attraction was taken down last year.Overall, this guide is good for a short trip. It will help you get an idea to what not to miss and will assist in prioritizing. However, for more up-to-date and practical information, I would recommend other more comprehensive guide books or the internet.
This book lists the Tropicana as the #2 hotel after all the big themed hotels. I chose the Tropicana over two other hotels based on this book's rating, since I've had luck with these Top 10 guides for other cities like Cancun, San Fran, and Seattle. This book is a bit outdated, but even a couple of years back, the Tropicana couldn't have deserved to be #2. In fact, I would rate it #2 on the list of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in.We booked a Garden room, but they put us in a Tower room at first. The hallways were dark, with peeling wallpaper and damaged wood trim. The elevators had poorly-painted pictures on the door with the paint peeling off. Our non-smoking room smelled of smoke and we couldn't get the window open, so we called the desk and they sent someone to spray it down, adding more of whatever odor was already attempting to cover the cigarette stench. We went back to the desk and got the Garden room we had paid for, which was a step up, but not far up. I had to pick the toilet seat up off of the bathroom floor and reattach it. The hot water in the bathtub wouldn't completely turn off. The air wasn't turning on, so I opened the balcony door, kicking over a half-empty beer can as I stepped out. Our departing flight got canceled and we had to stay an extra night, so we booked a hotel that was luxurious in comparison to the Tropicana - the Comfort Inn!
We used this guide in March and found it most helpful in determining which places we'd like to see and what to do in the three days there. The Around the Region section is perfect for those of you who plan to be in Vegas 4-5 days or longer. From festivals, spas, outdoor activities, buffets to the grandest resorts...everything is covered with great photos for visually-based decisions. I would recommend this for all first time Vegas visitors.
This Top 10 Las Vegas book is simple to use, but provides all the information you need to enjoy a short stay in Las Vegas. It will keep you occupied with things to do between 1-2 weeks. For longer-term stays, try using a more comprehensive guide. The Eyewitness Guide to Southwest USA & Las Vegas is a letdown, though. Ironically, it covers less of Las Vegas than the Top 10 guide does.
It was a good book with a great list of top 10 things but the problem is that the times and stuff in the book are way outdated. Don't use this book to go by the times that the hotels do their performaces. It does help to rate places well but I was pretty disappointed in the information. I would suggest you get the 2006 guide to vegas because it is a lot more helpful.
I am planning to go to Las Vegas and so I bought this book. This is really useful. I especially like the photos and they make me more looking forward to my trip. Of course, since this is a pocket book, you cannot expect too much detail from it. However, this is more than enough for me who is going for a 5- to 6-day trip.

In 2009 I had big dreams of becoming a soap maker and this was my GO-TO book when I first started making soap. Eight years later, I -think the book has become irrelevant. The author does a very good job of laying down the basics of soap-making, but all of this information can be found online. Soap-making suppliers and individual soap makers have made a tremendous contribution to providing online content via blogs, You-Tube and Pinterest. However, if you really want a book, skip this one and buy The Soap Makers Companion. It is written by the same author and I think it the book is more comprehensive.
Excellent book. Thoroughly researched and well presented, this author goes into the fine points of natural soap making, explaining the chemistry so any soap maker can understand, with or without a chemistry background. She explains the kinds of soap you can make at home, the ingredients in soap - such as lye, scents, colorants, nutrients, and preservatives, and the properties of those ingredients - as well as why the synthetic ingredients are harmful. She presents detailed steps in making numerous recipes included in the book, then goes beyond making basic soap and explains how to diagnose problems in your soap, then cutting, trimming and wrapping your hand made soap. She lists suppliers, and reviews books and magazines very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to potential soap makers.The problems with this book are as follows: There are very good ways to make soap that disagree with the author, temperature is a topic I don't agree with her about. Her recipes are too large, but you can find a lot of free recipes and instruction on the internet. You can lso find lye calculators online...soapcalc.net is an excellent resource,they also have many other helpful features on that website.
New to soap making and wanted some education on the subject. I liked the book but thought some of the ingredients in the recipes were rather pricy for a beginner. The recipes looked good. And I may try some if them later. But to start out I will try some if her other recipes from her book entitled "The Soapmaker's Companion".Having fun. Proud of my results. Gathering all the equipment to see how much I want to invest in this endeavor. I would recommend a book called "How to make wooden soap molds (without sawing a single piece if wood)" by M. Bear. If you are just getting started like me; you might want to check this one out.
I picked this book up because I was looking for a soap making book and this one fit the bill and was available on the Kindle. I am also only interested in vegetable oil soaps (no lard or tallow) since my hubby is a vegan.I found about 90% of the information presented in an easy to use form and was very applicable to someone who didn't know anything about making soap. I liked the part with the different vegetable oils and what they contribute to the finished product. I also tried one of the recipes (the shampoo bar for normal to dry hair) with good results. The recipes are made for HUGE batches (which is good for people who are selling their soaps) which doesn't help the beginning soap maker. I ended up translating the recipes to percentages rather than amounts which made it very easy to make any amount of soap. (My shampoo bar recipe made 3 bars)My suggestion for people who want smaller batches are to put the recipes into percentages then put the percentages into a lye calculator (I like SoapCalc) and put your recipe into grams. I picked up a cheap scale that does both ounces and grams and it works really well. I usually go for a 454 gram batch (about 1 pound) or 225 gram batch (about 1/2 pound). Those amounts are great for experimenting and will be able to show me rather I want to make a larger batch or make more of that recipe.If you are looking for a good book on making vegetable oil soaps, this is it. I would recommend it highly. It is also nicely formatted for e-readers like the Kindle.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to make soap. After reading the book, I was hesitant with attempting to make soap since the author made it sound so complicated. (It took reading several other soapmaking books to get up the courage.) I use it more as a guide/advice book rather than a book for soapmaking recipes.I have to say, though, that this book was written by someone who has had a lot of experience with soapmaking, and it is one of the few books I read that had a "troubleshooting" guide for soapmaking problems. My first attempt with soapmaking was a failure. The first batch came out powdery in some areas. The troubleshooting guide helped explained why.
Used this book years ago. Decided to try soapmaking again and this was THE book to start over with. It is the book with the best info for anyone looking to make old-fashioned lye soaps. Could not find it at the local bookstore. Once again Amazon is the place to find things you need!
This book is well worth every penny and much more. The author goes in so much detail about how ingredients process in the soap and apply to the body. I was able to use the recommendations for soap making and leave the beginning money pit experimenting out. If you are serious about soap making as a business not a hobby this book is a wonderful resource. It also gave me a lot to think about when determining my own recipes.
This is a good basic read. Obviously much has changed since this book was written. I don't feel it's the responsibility of the author to make a decision based on personal beliefs for the reader. An author of an educational book should present the unbiased information so the readers can form their own opinions.

I purchased this book for my 7yr grand-daughter who is very artistic and loves crafts. There are so many ideas that she even found something for a science fair project. She was thrilled with it.
It's okay, but needs more for the boys'.
Great book for the crafty kid. I like that it looks like a child actually did the artwork and can do most of the projects by themselves.

His bitter melon recipes toughed a taste point in my memories that hasn't been satisfied for a long time - I have purchased bitter melon seeds and plan on some interesting experiments this coming summer, Chinese wokked ones as well. For you without access, Galangal, tumeric, and ginger m ay be grown down to high zone if they are not available. His way of making coconut milk is different than i have done many times. Mine: finely grate and press fresh coconut flesh and press. Allow to sit in a bowl and the cream will rise to the top. . No preparration should intimade anyone here, if they can find the ingrediants. If you like Thai cooking and its preparation intimidates you, here is a place to break through.
Thank you Craig Fear for this contribution to the world! I have been battling health issues on many fronts for a long time. I've made tons of bone broth but just got bored and exhausted by it. You have literally given me new hope in my quest for health because these recipes are fun, adventurous, exciting and they taste so, so good! I've been trying to get my husband off gluten for a long time and now with congee for breakfast rather than cereal I think he'll be much happier. I can't thank you enough for this giant leap forward for healthy cooking and the freedom and creativity involved helps the heart, too. I love this cookbook. It's almost more like a self-help book on steroids.
I just bought this book and can't wait to try it. The hard part will be to find some of the ingredients like fresh lemon grass and galangal but finding these things organic will be easier on Amazon.

Great gift for a little princess, beginner reader on her birthday. Has many of new readers sight words. Has nice rhymes to encourage memorization. My daughter loved as a gift when she turned 5 and still reads this book now. It's cute and fun. Has a page or two for each princess and her birthday celebration. Includes Jasmine, Rapunzel, Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White, Tiana, Belle, and Aurora. All princesses have 2 pages dedicated to them except Jasmine and Tiana, they have one. Hmmmm.
This was for my 4 year old niece Birthday who can read so this book was easy to read and follow. The book celebrates all the Disney Princess birthdays. So it was perfect for my princess!
Did they revamp this book? Previous reviews complained that all the princesses had 4 dedicated pages with exception of Tiana who had only 2 (presumably due to racism). The copy I received had mostly 2 pages for each princess. Sleeping Beauty (one of my daughter's favorites) is not in here at all. Neither is Mulan or Pocahontas. It's pretty light on text so a quick read - I'm talking about 2 minutes. My daughter liked the sparkly stickers of the princesses bound into the back.
My 4 year old daughter thoroughly enjoys this book. While she cannot read, the words are short enough and LARGE enough so that she is starting to recognize them and this book is helping her learn to read. It is simple, and clear, and the pictures are evident of what is happening in the words. This helps her to try to associate words with situations. We bought this for her for her 4th birthday and she looks through it often.
The Step Into Reading Series is just terrific to encourage reading improvement in little ones. Our little granddaughter princess can't wait to read about her favorite Disney Princesses. And, a birthday story for her birthday? Perfection!
I bought this book for my niece who was turning 5. She is learning to read in school so this was a great buy for her. I am anxious to see how she likes it the next time I see her. I skimmed through the pages and it is really cute.
