About the Author
Gary Collins has a very interesting and unique background that includes military intelligence, Special Agent for the U.S. State Department Diplomatic Security Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Collins' background and expert knowledge brings a much-needed perspective to today's areas of simple living, health, nutrition, entrepreneurship, self-help and being more self-reliant. He holds an AS degree in Exercise Science, BS in Criminal Justice, and MS in Forensic Science. Gary was raised in the High Desert at the basin of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in a rural part of California. What this book lacks in hype and nonsense it makes up for in information that is simple, easy to understand, actionable, and livable. So if you're looking for the latest "get ripped" quick scheme or other hucksterism, this book may not be for you.I spent most of my youth as an athlete and gym rat. Now in my 40s, I have the injuries to prove it. There were so many dumb fads. I wish this book had been around back then.I liked the book enough to go into the danger zone and suggest it to my wife.
Very enjoyable. A bit of talk about getting back to a "primal" lifestyle and how you can do it.
Actionable and Sustainable!I’ve read a lot of books on fitness and dieting over the years, but this is one of the best books that I’ve read on these topics by far. It forgoes all the trendy diets and latest exercises with unrealistic promises of weight loss and strength gains. Instead, the book provides a simple and personalized plan for diet and exercise that is readily actionable, results driven (already lost 1.5 inches off waistline in the last month), and most importantly sustainable!
This well-written book covers it all—what to eat, how to move, and which supplements are beneficial—from the unique perspective of a guy who solved his own health problems and who used to be a special agent for the FDA. The chapter on counterfeit supplements was a real eye-opener for me, and worth the price of admission itself. I’m much more careful with how I purchase them now.I have autoimmune thyroid issues and have read many other books that helped unravel things for me, like the excellent ones from Dr. Datis Kharrazian, but this book explains things in a way that’s simpler to read and understand, and very easy to implement. I wish I had had it ten years ago—it would have saved me thousands of dollars in doctor bills and unnecessary supplements, not to mention years of stress and confusion.If you’re overweight, struggling with autoimmunity, or just not feeling well and getting the runaround from doctors, this book could be the key to getting your health back.
First of all I received an arc of this book by Hidden Gems for an honest review!I would first start off by saying that I found it a little pompous when right from the get go the author, Gary Collins when he states Bottom line: no one else in the health industry has my background—no one! I seriously don’t think that this is true when there are so many other professionals and educators out there, so I feel like I’m trying to be duped! However I will say that there is a plethora of great information to be had in this guide, such as a great list for shopping and what spices, oils, etc.. to use . Also I found some great tips on exercising and steps to ensure better eating habits. I disagree with his statements of saying that obesity is not from overeating and that eating too many calories does not cause excessive weight gain, but that is only my opinion.. also I love the tip about using glass containers instead of plastic for leftovers! Overall this was pretty informative and a good reference guide!
No pun intended - but really this book is simply readable. The book explains some of the author's explanations for causes of current health issues resulting from current health fads. He explains, in easy to understand terms ,what refined foods, gmo's, carbs, cholesterol and calories are. Much of what the author explains you've probably heard in one form or another, but he puts it all together in a nice package. There is nothing that is all or nothing here, and I think if you followed just his nutrition, exercise or supplement advice you'd probably be on your way to a good start. It is annoying that he mentions his own supplements throughout the book, but again, all tied up in a neat little package. While I'm here to mainly critique the book, he does refer to his website quite often and I would suggest you take a look at that as well, and judge for yourself.Thanks to Hidden Gems and the publisher for an advanced reader's copy of this book.
This was a solid informative read.The author has an impressive background and insider in the US food and drug industry.While this book talks a lot about how things stand with the health & nutrition chain in the US, it is applicable to all other countries where convenience food, fast food and consumer culture is in abundance.Personally, I don't agree with everything said here. I am leaning towards a vegan diet myself.But keeping an open mind and willing to try some things and see what happens.This is a great guide to use as a starting point if you have trouble with dieting and keeping fit and healthy.Especially if online health information is confusing you to the point you can't make decisions.The author breaks everything down in simple steps and covers a lot of ground from nutrition, medication, fitness and stress.Very well researched and easy read for non experts.I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
This book covers every aspect of healthy living from Nutrition to exercise to sleep. The author provides simple, down-to-earth and easy to follow advice and/or recommendations. Some important things to remember when reading this book: (1) The author was involved with the FDA and is not a nutritionist or an MD.(2) He has his own line of supplements and he does advertise them at various points throughout the book, so that advice might be skewed.(3) His research is generally very good but does show a prejudice against GMO's, Gluten, etc and tends towards a bit of populism. He also refers to things like Turmeric which he praises for its anti-oxidant properties. Research has already debunked the efficacy of anti-oxidants.None the less, a very good, sensible book. Highly recommended.I received this book as an ARC and decided to submit a review.
