Having been a pastor/therapist for pastors for many years, I can testify that many of the issues the authors highlight are very real issues in pastoral life. The authors also give some very workable solutions, and for that I commend them. Their central point is that to achieve excellence, you have to come to peace with the reality that you can't possibly do everything. You have to say "no" to some things to be able to say "yes" to others. What makes this book different from many others is that the authors recognize that this is not a simple matter; there are often pulls from the larger system (the congregation, the denomination, society as a whole, etc.) that reinforce trying to say "yes" to everything. So, overall, it's a good book. My one quibble is that the authors chose to frame everything in terms of Bowen Family System Theory. Now, there is nothing particularly wrong with Bowen theory; it's still respected in the field of family therapy. However, it is not a very contemporary way of looking at things or languaging things. There are other systems theories (Narrative, to give only one example) that are a better fit with contemporary life. These other theories would not change the primary focus of the book or undercut its primary message. They would just give a more helpful, I believe, way of understanding the various pulls that every pastor feels. My advice is, read the book, take the many good parts to heart, and sit easy to the over-emphasis on Bowen Theory. You may just find your anxiety levels going down, and that's a good thing.
This is a fantastic book and a must be resource for all pastors and their lay leaders. Boundaries are an issue that need to be addressed and this book highlights this topic in a different (but much needed) manner. Conversation about the psyche of the pastor and how it affects ministry has been highly neglected by the hierarchy of most denominations. Encouragement to join this conversation is imperative and could start with this book.
There are a lot of common sense, practical type ideas expressed here. Also some very helpful reminders. Combined, they make for a good read. Mostly, I was reminded that I'm not God, God is. I can't do everything or say yes to everything. It would be helpful for me to set and maintain appropriate boundaries in my life in order to be more effective as a pastor.
A must read for work: first half of book was preoccupied with deficits of people’s conduct, it latter chapters gave great growth advice
Well researched with applicable examples, the authors probe the challenges of boundary-setting where both the pastor's and the congregation's expectations and experiences may be on a collision course. The end-of-chapter questions stimulate the reader to self-examination and awareness. Practical suggestions for improving or initiating healthy boundaries cap off this valuable addition to the library.
