A therapist recommended this book to me. I honestly had a difficult time going through the first few pages because this book really hits the heart like no other. It's as if she knows what's going on in my head. Of course, it's not to overgeneralize...yet at the same time, this book is something I feel is necessary for me right now.As I mentioned in the title, it touches a VERY sensitive part of the heart.I don't want to even look at it, I don't want to deal with it, and I don't want to keep crying when I think about it.At the same time, this book will politely beckon me to do so - so I can face it, deal with it, and accept it.I highly recommend for those who experience challenging, almost destructive, relationships with food & body image.I am still on the journey - and I can't read too many pages at once. Sometimes, I just end up breaking down inside and out.
This has been a transformational book for me. I have both the kindle version, which I read years ago and loved, as well as the audible version, which I have listened to three times and I would absolutely recommend. This is one of those rare books that transforms you as you read (or, especially, listen to). I struggled with on-and-off bulimia for over 20 years and, while I haven't purged in several years, the mindset is still something I have carried with me. I am finally beginning to acknowledge my feelings and preferences and ideas - my perceptions are important and valid, even if others don't see them or agree. I have always been a people pleaser, melding my personality to suit whomever I was with. This book has helped me to gently see how to change that and how to validate not only my opinions and feelings, but others', too. She says that every person she has ever worked with has had to find her voice and learn to be assertive in order to overcome their eating disorder, and that is certainly true of me. I find that I have no need for food when I acknowledge my feelings and accept them. I am learning to pay attention to my dreams and am learning about myself through them. There are so many gems in this book. It may sound funny that learning by metaphor would have any practical application for recovery, but I have found it SO much more effective than the books that give you checklists of behavior modification and homework assignments. I love myself more, I validate myself more, and in so doing, I love others more and respect their boundaries, because I am setting my own. Buy this book - it is a gentle, loving approach to understanding why you have this disordered eating - it's the best you knew how to do at the time. And now you can learn to love yourself into new behavior that naturally evolves because you are addressing the underlying needs that went unmet before. Buy it!!
If you're looking for a book that just tells you how to not have eating disorder symptoms, this is not the book for you! This book is for those who are looking for healing--TRUE, DEEP, REAL HEALING. I read this book in less than a day. Now I'm going back through it more slowly to take it all in. This is the first eating disorder book I have read (and I have read MANY) that talks about healing from an eating disorder. It isn't about whose symptoms are worse or yet another depressing memoir. This author uses metaphors, stories, analogies to reach your deeper psyche. It's an enjoyable read, yet a deep read. Look at her website for an example called The Log (www.dranitajohnston.com). I can't suggest this book enough.
I encountered this book when my relationship with food reached a peak of dysfunction. I went to a therapist, and in our first session she recommended this book. As soon as I started the book, I began to cry. It resonated with deep seated feelings that I had carried for a long time. I continued to cry as I read this book chapter by chapter, night after night. The book helped me see my dysfunctional eating in an entirely different way— that food was not the real problem, it was a “red herring.†The real problem was my relationship with my emotions, with myself, with others, and with the world around me. This beautifully written book with its many relevant fables helped give me perspective on the issues that I faced. I continued to turn to it as high levels of stress or emotion led to dysfunctional eating. I also very much appreciated Johnston's feminist perspective and her challenges to Western norms.I still struggle with disordered eating, but now I have so many more tools to help cope— both from this book and through therapy. I know this journey will continue for some time and I must continue to face the “tiger†of my relationship with food.
Incredibly insightful book that combines literature and research from the 1970s feminist spirituality movement with contemporary psychology and has an almost anthropological approach with the inclusion of many multicultural folk tales. Stunning read and its principles can be adapted for a variety of addictive behaviors and mental illnesses, or for general mental wellness.
I was only in the first chapter when this book started opening my eyes. If you'e ready to read something like this, if you want to know the real reasons why you eat the way you do then this is the book for you. I obsess over every calorie that goes into my mouth, I think about food all the time, because I have to control it, or it will control me. Or so I thought. This book made me see that food and my relationship with it already controls me. In our society we are taught that there is only one ideal, one perfect body and yet less than 4% of women have that body and yet almost every one of us strives for it when it is impossible. Who tells us how we should look? Men. It's not a male bashing book at all but you have to realize that we live in a male dominated society and everything and I do mean everything stems from that. As long as we let other people control our minds and how we feel about ourselves, our lives are not our own.A powerful book, if you're ready it will help you change your relationship with food.
Amazing book, super helpful for anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder, after my nutritionist told me about this and I read it, I've recommended it to so many friends.

FREAKING FINALLY ★★★★★ StarsAfter 3 books that went basically nowhere with minuscule plot development FINALLY and I mean FINALLY the story took off and things HAPPENEDIt’s like Jordan had a check list of things to tick off and he just went done the list….✔ - Perrin looking for Faile and getting his woman back✔ - Egwene actually doing something useful. Sure she had to get captured and put in the white tower to do it but finally her story arc is way more interesting.✔ - Nynaeve and Lan finally getting a little relationship fleshing out and one of my favorite moments of the series. Way to go all Aes Sedea on your man Nynaeve. This is probably the only time I will approve of such a move.✔ - Avienda cutting strings from Elayne. Maybe it will be her turn with Rand again soon.✔ - Rand outing another of the Forsaken. The price might be a little heavy but he just keeps on swimming. Actually I love him and Min together, she seems to get him better than anyone else and I love how in her own way she is just as strong or actually stronger than him. (view spoiler)✔ - Mat and Tuon playing courting games that seem more like battle strategy I LOVE THEM SO MUCH TOGETHER✔ - Thom finally telling us what is in that letter that Moraince left for him how many books ago. Well we get to read it AND I’m so excited about where that is going to lead our crew.✔ - The Elayne the Daughter Heir finally finding her place. Whether it is on the Lion throne or not you will just have to read to see. Her arc is actually my least favorite maybe because so much time is spent on the pregnancy and sometimes she is so smart and THEN she does that very stupid thing towards the end that just leads me to believe she isn’t even close to ready to be a Queen.✔ - Birgetta being awesome as always. Why would we need Galad or Gawyn again to protect Elayne??? I just don’t know. I’m pretty sure I know who Gaidal Cain is reincarnated as *crosses fingers* that is my favorite deviant in training (view spoiler)And Much Much more…. A few characters get the comeuppances that they deserve and it is so gratifying. Was it worth going through three pretty slow books to get to some awesome? The jury is still out. For me yeah probably since Sanderson is finishing out this series and I read ~200 books a year so no biggy. But for someone else who doesn’t get to read so much and has to pick and choose probably not unless you are into extreme worldbuilding.Very excited to start the into the end with my favorite Epic Fantasy Writer the fantastic Brandon Sanderson.
Jordan must have known he was dying and didn't have much time to wrap up all the story lines of the WoT in one book, but he sure as hell tried his best. I've seen more advancing of the storyline in this book than for the past three or four books combined. Book ten was the worst book I've ever read with it's meandering nonsense from Elayne. Literally useless descriptions of a hundred nobles names, everyone's clothes, goats milk, and blaming Rand for her own actions. I was surprised to see more tactful storytelling in this book despite Elayne's horribly boring and pointless chapters which I got tired of and skipped through eventually. She is the most reprehensible character who still refuses to accept responsibility for her actions, is conceited beyond belief, and makes rash terrible decisions that get people uselessly killed and then shrugs it off as not her fault. Rand turns out to continue to make similar mistakes but Mat's story makes up for both those nincompoops! And Egwene is finally getting some more necessary character development to help her deserve her undeserved position as a leader of 200 year old witches. I mean come on shes what twenty?
I have been waiting for the pace to pick up and the plot to progress and it finally does in this book. Probably because originally there was only supposed to be one more book after this one so Jordan had to start wrapping things up. About time!!! It took me forever to start this book because I was sick to death of his writing and the slow plotting pace of the last five books! But I had made it this far and I hear that Brandon Sanderson does an excellent job and that the last three books are really good (my husband loved them, although this is his favorite book series so...). I am happy to report that this book feels more like the original books in the series, which were excellent. Stuff starts happening and instead of focusing almost exclusively on the girls, the guys get to have some "screen time." I read this book a lot faster and didn't have to resort to skipping parts like I did the last one or two books. I am so happy to be getting to the juicy end of this series!
I have read all of the books in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, about three or four times now. I am currently on kKnife of Dreams and I'm excited to purchase the rest of the collection. If you've never read these books and you love fantasy, please, pick up the first book in the series "Eye of the World." I promise halfway through the first book you'll be hooked!
"Knife of Dreams" is the 11th book in the "Wheel of Time" series, and I was pleasantly surprised that Jordan started to pull things together in this book compared to the previous one. Many people claim female characters in the series are weak, but I thought Jordan did a great job of adding dimension to Egwene's character as she faces her custody in the White Tower and her punishments for refusing to yield to Eladia's command. She is subjected to severe penance, but embraces it in Aiel fashion with great honor. In addition, I also thought Nynaeve grew immensely in this book in her relationship with Lan, and there was an awesome scene involving Lan and his destiny in the story. After meandering for the last two books, I thought Jordan did pleasing advanced the story arcs of Perrin/Faile, Mat/Tuon, and Elayne while including and some battles with trollocs and the Black Ajah. Rand's story also advanced, although it is a bit slower since so much focus was on the other main characters.I've already finished book 12, and I can tell you the story is really getting exciting now! I thought Jordan really got the story back on track with book 11, and Sanderson cranks things up in the remaining books. It is so worth the long read if you've been involved since the first book in the series!

Amazon.com Review
Horror lit's head chef Harris serves up another course in his Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter trilogy, and it's a pièce de résistance for those with strong stomachs. In the first book, Red Dragon (filmed as Manhunter), Hannibal diabolically helps the FBI track a fascinating serial killer. (Takes one to know one.) In The Silence of the Lambs, he advises fledgling FBI manhunter Clarice Starling, then makes a bloody, brilliant escape. Years later, posing as scholarly Dr. Fell, curator of a grand family's palazzo, Hannibal lives the good life in Florence, playing lovely tunes by serial killer/composer Henry VIII and killing hardly anyone himself. Clarice is unluckier: in the novel's action-film-like opening scene, she survives an FBI shootout gone wrong, and her nemesis, Paul Krendler, makes her the fall guy. Clarice is suspended, so, unfortunately, the first cop who stumbles on Hannibal is an Italian named Pazzi, who takes after his ancestors, greedy betrayers depicted in Dante's Inferno. Pazzi is on the take from a character as scary as Hannibal: Mason Verger. When Verger was a young man busted for raping children, his vast wealth saved him from jail. All he needed was psychotherapy--with Dr. Lecter. Thanks to the treatment, Verger is now on a respirator, paralyzed except for one crablike hand, watching his enormous, brutal moray eel swim figure eights and devour fish. His obsession is to feed Lecter to some other brutal pets. What happens when the Italian cop gets alone with Hannibal? How does Clarice's reunion with Lecter go from macabre to worse? Suffice it to say that the plot is Harris's weirdest, but it still has his signature mastery of realistic detail. There are flaws: Hannibal's madness gets a motive, which is creepy but lessens his mystery. If you want an exact duplicate of The Silence of the Lambs's Clarice/Hannibal duel, you'll miss what's cool about this book--that Hannibal is actually upstaged at points by other monsters. And if you think it's all unprecedentedly horrible, you're right. But note that the horrors are described with exquisite taste. Harris's secret recipe for success is restraint. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
This narrative roils along a herky-jerky vector but remains always mesmerizing, as Harris's prose and insights, particularly his reveries about Hannibal, boast power and an overripe beauty. If at times the suspense slackens and the story slips into silliness, it becomes clear that this is a post-suspense novel, as much sardonic philosophical jest as grand-guignol thriller. Hannibal, we learnA"we" because Harris seduces reader complicity with third-person-plural narrationAis not as we presumed. The monster's aim is not chaos, but order. Through his devotion to manners and the connoisseur's life, in fact to form itself, he hopesAconsciouslyAto reverse entropy and thus the flow of time, to allow a dead sister to live again. He is not Dionysius but Apollo, and it is the barbarians who oppose him who are to be despised. Hannibal may be mad, but in this brilliant, bizarre, absurd novelAas in the public eyeAhe is also hero; and so, at novel's end, in blackest humor, Harris bestows upon him a hero's rewards, outrageously, mockingly. Agent, Morton Janklow. 1.3 million first printing; film rights to Dino De Laurentis. (June) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I was very hesitant to buy this book after seeing how evenly divided people were between loving and hating it. But then I realized that some of the best books drive fans to polarize this way, so I gave it a chance. To me, this book did reach a feverish nightmare quality that felt heightened compared to its predecessors. However, for Harris to pull off the ending, that height was necessary. Yes, it was shocking, but also utterly satisfying, and it couldn't have been accomplished any other way.I didn't entirely enjoy the middle section in Italy, but perhaps it only made me that much more glad to return to Starling and her action-packed chapters. If you're someone who gets particularly thrilled by a blazing showdown at the climax of a book, I'd recommend this book.If you're more interested in Harris' craft as a murder mystery writer, this book may have veered too far into ethereal horror territory for you.But either way, I think it's worth giving it a try.
I give the book four stars. To explain: the story seemed choppy to me. Perhaps I'm a fan of architecture in writing; avid description and character development. The psychology Harris tackles in these novels is what makes them a pleasant read, in my experience. I enjoy the descriptions of characters, their thought processes. Harris' brief allowance into the mind of Lecter, specifically, and other characters was rewarding. Note I said brief. Something seemed rushed with this novel.I wasn't upset with the ending, as so many fans seem to be. I get the strong female lead, Clarice Starling, and the reasons why, perhaps, fans wanted her character to remain ABOVE the influence of Lecter, to forever stand for some sort of invisible integrity placed upon what a "strong" female should be. Fans seemed disappointed because Clarice became human, through her untimely empathy and understanding of Lecter as, not a monster, but as another human being. The monster became human and for a moment we understood him, but we don't like to acknowledge we can understand monstrous behavior. The lamb, our strong female lead, then became lesser, almost monstrous herself, because she came to this understanding, and eventually offered herself as sort of a sacrifice to not only curb the monsters appetite, but in her own way, heal her own wounds.I found this novel to be a delightful read, along with the others. I really enjoy seeing how the writing and characters were woven together to create the "Hannibal" television series. That series was a fantastic, and visually stunning adaptation of Harris' work. To which I highly recommend! If your mind is open, and you simply enjoy reading, these novels are truly a treat.
While not as satisfying as Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, or (to a lesser extent) Hannibal, Thomas Harris manages to cook up a decadent appetizer to an already loaded three-course meal. It's hard not to see Hannibal Rising as a last-ditch effort to revive an ailing franchise by further developing one of the most complex characters of modern fiction. By offering a traumatic origin story as explanation for how a human being could become Dr. Lecter, Harris walks a dangerous tightrope in making his magnificent creation a less-fascinating avatar of evil. What this novel gives readers is a sumptuous look at Hannibal's youth, the plot of which is not much more than a thrilling story of grisly vengeance. A young Lithuanian aristocrat loses his parents and darling sister, Mischa, in the final desperate days of World War II. Hannibal is forced to watch as little Mischa is devoured by callous Nazi-sympathizing ruffians whom Hannibal later tracks down and gruesomely dispatches in the natural course of the novel. By the end of Hannibal Rising, the reader is left with a better understanding of the epicurean psychiatrist, even if the book doesn't exactly conclude with the satisfaction one would wish from an examination of Lecter's tenebrous beginnings. The action is swift and often fleeting, and the chapters brief (often only four pages), and the sentences are, for the most part, simplistic and lacking the eloquence found in Harris's preceding works. The dialogue is occasionally stilted and the character of Lady Murasaki, who sensually introduces the impressionable teenage Hannibal to a rarified world of Japanese art and poetry, exists only to be beautiful.Thankfully, Hannibal Lecter remains a preeminent literary icon, a dominant fictional boogeyman, and that's primarily due to Anthony Hopkins's unforgettable screen incarnation. Hannibal Rising reads like the novelization of a screenplay; not surprisingly Thomas Harris wrote the screenplay in the course of writing this novel. That isn't to say the book is a complete loss, for even after so many years since writing Red Dragon and Silence, Harris still possesses a keen aptitude for depicting the animal nature that lurks beneath mankind's veneer of civilization.
LOVE this book. Ive read it no less than ten times and this digital version is because the pages started to come off the paperback. The writing is spell-binding and the plot-line takes the reader on a whirlwind. I also LOVE that Lecter and Starling get together at the end. I know so many think it was crazy but it makes perfect sense to me. The Lecter back story is also enthralling and humanizes the character in a way that the entire SUCKY rendering of Hannibal Rising could not deliver. Id give this ten stars if permitted. LOVE THIS BOOK!!

Review
"This book demonstrates the singular significance of America's brief but crucial experience with modern war in 1917 and 1918."--Michael S. Neiberg, The Journal of American History "But do you want Uncle Sam? Capozzola's fresh history of the American past is a bracing challenge to the American present--and future."--James Carroll, author of House of War"Capozzola does an excellent job of rendering the jingoistic, dogmatic mindset that characterized the country at a crucial time...All this the author captures in eloquently rendered and assiduously researched detail."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)"A well crafted and important work that adds critical depth to the historical understanding of this transformative period of American history. Capozzola convincingly argues that during World War I the power of the state grew at the expense of citizens' rights."--Andrew Wiest, History: Reviews of New Books"A sharp sense of irony and dry wit undergird this eloquent history of how Americans remade their understanding of the relationship between state and citizen in the crucible of World War I. We now live with the massive structures of state power that were first constructed then; we share many of that generation's obligations and anxieties. Can we learn from their mistakes?"--Linda K. Kerber, author of No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship"Uncle Sam Wants You immerses readers in one of the formative moments of the twentieth century, when the fervent production of war-time loyalty collided with much weaker voices of civil liberties and dissent. In an eloquent blend of historical narrative and political theory, Capozzola pursues the question: what can the state legitimately demand of its citizens? This is a powerfully told and eye-opening history whose implications will bring readers right up to the present."--Daniel T. Rodgers, author of Atlantic Crossings: Social Politics in a Progressive Age"The stresses of wartime inevitably change a society, both in the short and the long term. Christopher Capozzola's Uncle Sam Wants You brilliantly illuminates the powerful and often unnoticed impact of World War I on American culture. By so doing, it sheds essential light on contemporary controversies that will affect the United States for years to come."--Geoffrey R. Stone, University of Chicago"Capozzola brings politics into social history, and paints a more vivid picture of the pervasiveness of wartime repression than has so far been available...[R]eaders are unlikely to find a fresher, more substantial exploration of the repressive atmosphere of World War I anytime soon."--The History Teacher"You will gain many fresh insights by reading Capozzola's finely nuanced study about how the domestic impact of the war did and did not change the conception of what it meant to be an American citizen."--Michael E. Parrish, Journal of Interdisciplinary History"Capozzola succeeds in bringing political theory to the ground level. Engaged writing style and compelling analysis will make the book useful in advanced undergraduate and graduate history, political science, and political theory courses alike."--Beatrice McKenzie, The Historian"Capozzola writes with a vividness and verve. Essential reading not just for experts in the period but for anyone interested in the broader themes of American history, especially those wanting to learn about the development of its political culture."--Steven Casey, War in History"Readers of Capozzola's book will be struck by the stark contrasts concerning US participation in the Great War and the current war on terror."--CHOICE"Subtle, complex, and remarkably balanced. A very well-written book on a period of American history just now starting to get the scholarly attention it deserves. A book all historians of modern America should not only be familiar with, but be able to enjoy reading as well."--Mark E. Grotelueschen, Journal of World History"This is a fine study of the way US society was changed by the stresses of war and society as well as to the history of the US."--Times Higher Education Supplement

Capozzola brings life to the days of American involvement in WWI and a period in our history few learn about in school. The effects of Selective Service, the marginalizing of minority populations by their fellow citizens and the many stories, all well-documented, should be read by everyone lest we don't forget our real past. A good read as well!
Very intriguing topic, Capozzola provides the reader with an alternative view of home font athmosphere during WWI. He brings to light the many intricacies of volunteerism, coercion, patriotism, and civic responsibilities. Highly recommended for individual pursing a master's degree in American History, especially if ones emphasis is on 20th century social history.
Extremely well researched history that relates the war time home front environment and its massive changes.
Great read, especially for those like me who got curious about the dichotomy in American life between federal power and social goals on the one hand, and individual freedom on the other. While the War Between the States certainly advanced federal power, this history reveals that it was World War I and the first unified national effort in global war that the necessity of federal controls to produce a monumental war effort ran headlong into the culture of individualism, and the greater influence of state and local governments that pre-existed it. Without the experience of World war I, it would likely have been impossible for the US to have mobilized as it did for World War II, the Nazis might very well have won, the Japanese might very well have held onto China, and the US would be a second rate power, the Soviet Union a hodgpodge of German colonies, and Europe a pale poor place.
I'm not a fan of books pieced together from dissertation notes--which is what this is. Capozzola makes great points early on about the connections between enlistment and perceived masculinity but doesn't continue any consistent themes throughout this book. The result is a mishmash of arguments and unfinished conversations.
History everyone should know
