From the Inside Flap
“[Negotiating Race and Nation] breaks new ground in our understanding of Noguchi’s constructed identity and career. [Lyford’s] account is lively, vivid, and engaging. [Her] scholarship and analysis are impressive in their breadth and depth. Presenting new material as well as contributing to our understanding of familiar material, it addresses a broad audience of scholars and students in the fields of modern art history, Asian-American studies, race and ethnicity, Orientalism, and identity construction.†―Joseph Henning, author of Outposts of Civilization: Race, Religion and the Formative Years of American-Japanese Relations “While there is general consensus that Noguchi is a pivotal figure in twentieth century America, when it comes to an analysis of his artistic significance, his biography has often played an overriding role in explaining the meaning of his art and his importance as a sculptor. Lyford accurately assesses this conundrum and locates this problem in matters of “race and nation.†Her work is well-conceived and organized, and written with precision and elegance. It illuminates aspects of twentieth century American artistic modernism in a nuanced and convincing fashion.†―Karin Higa, Japanese American National Museum

I am endlessly fascinated by the rough-and-tumble politics of America's 19th century and the colorful, sometimes absurd characters who rose to prominence. And, as a Civil War buff, I enjoy reading about the various commanders both great and small. Among the books in my ever-growing collection this is a true delight. Pillow was a wealthy lawyer and planter who knew the right people in high places and finagled commands of great responsibility in both the Mexican and Civil Wars despite lacking military training or, apparently, common sense. Yet he was recklessly brave and his men - some of them - and his public - most of it - adored him. Every page of this highly readable biography is packed with documented facts that boggle the mind, such that a certain level of wryness in the prose style is unavoidable. But this is far more than a "gee whiz" account, as the authors find evidence to dispel some of the worst disasters for which Pillow has been blamed, especially the surrender of Ft. Donelson in 1862. A self-promoter, brown-noser, and back-stabber he may have been, and it came back to haunt him even when he may not have deserved it. You will probably be most amazed to think Gideon Pillow had as good a chance to be President as some who made it, like Zachary Taylor or Franklin Pierce.
Pillow was a key player in the early stages of the war but very few people know his story. This book offers a very good insight to the vain Pillow, the man, politician and General. He is also an example of never giving up. He lost a lot during the war but never really believed he was "wrong." A good book to read.
Fascinating book!! Sheds new insight on a relatively unknown Civil War General, as well as other aspects of life in Southern Nineteenth Century America. Painstakingly researched.
Good book - used for genealogy purpose
Gideon Pillow is someone most people who study the Civil War or antebellum politics have heard of, but not much is ever said of him. Some might know him as the General who fled Ft. Donelson or the guy who helped get James K. Polk elected and became a general in the Mexican War, but is that all he did? After reading this biography you'll learn he did a lot more. If you're like me you only have negative opinions of Pillow and might not be very interested in learning more about him, but I urge you to reconsider. This biography is very fair handed in its criticism and praise. In the end Pillow was an ultimate failure in warfare, but not in life.
Read this book in college after taking the author"a class. It was incredibly boring. The most uninteresting civil war book I ever read.

I got this to help teach honesty with my 3 and 4 year old. They both love the book & ask to read it a lot. I purposely bought this one because I read the sheep are all killed at the end. I wanted the more dramatic ending to make an impact. I've heard some of the other versions of this fable have a softer ending. It's a thin, paperback book which I like for space saving on my bookshelf.I would recommend this book.
I wanted a book that showed the results of telling a lie and, of course, I remembered this story from my childhood. The illustrations are good and the storyline very good as it is also enjoyed by a 6-year old and a 4-year old. Easy to discuss with them also.
Great Aesop fable with a moral to teach young children about honesty. I bought this for my 6 year old grandson and we love reading it together. This is not a Bible story, as another reviewer thought it was.
Good story that teaches an important lesson but it's a very short book and not really worth the price. I ended up finding it at the mall for half what I paid here.
Read this classic version to my GA Pre-K class several times. Was having trouble with a couple of the boys not always telling the truth. It helped.
The book does a great job with the story, and makes the danger of the wolf just real enough, but without the gore. The kids keep asking to read it.
My son loves this story and its been a huge help to talk about why honesty is such an important characteristic
Good portrayal of the story and the moral; our twin 3 year olds always liked the story now have a book with pictures and all for it a lot. Only thing to make a decision for your kids, does say the wolves kill the sheep, so have to determine if your kids are ready for that explanation.

Bought this for my teenager at the recommendation of his percussion teacher. The kid has lots of band/orchestra percussion experience but just got a drumset. He's been very enthusiastic about working through the grooves, reading the book's explanation for each, watching the video demo of technique, then practicing with the playalong tracks. Apparently the playalong tracks are a lot of fun, because he often picks them over video games. There's a code in the book that he used to download the audio to his phone, more convenient than playing them off the DVD. One suggestion for players who wear earplugs or muffs: You'll want a pair of isolation headphones to hear the audio at reasonable volume over the drums.
You cannot go wrong with Tommy Igoe. His personality and delivery will hook you from the jump. You cannot manufacture personality, so despite all the other products on the market that teach drums, this one pulled me right in and made me feel like I am sitting in a room with Tommy rather than watching a DVD. I guess you'd have to experience it to understand, but he's just a terrific teacher and you feel like you are being totally supported in your learning.
This is an excellent set. It has dvd ancd(but be aware, the cd tracks are in mp3 format. They will not play in a regular cd player unless it has this feature. You download them to you mp3 player or a cd player with mp3 format. Tommy Igoe starts you from the beginning, but it is helpful if you have some drum basics. Groove 2.0 IS FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS. Get the combination from amazon cd/dvd 1.0, then move onto 2.0 I highly suggest both cd&dvd packaged together. Amazon stands by their products. So again if the cd does not play, you download to your computer, or play there. The dvd will play on any dvd player. It is by far an excellent resource on all the different types of grooves you can learn with examples of who to listen to-example James Brown_funk groove etc. This was well done and very comprehensive. I rarely write reviews. If you want to learn, this is a "5 star" item-Robert Martin
Great book and DVD. My daughter is using it and she is getting good. I will minus 1 star and wish Tony would update the styles more in tune to todays music. Still a very good book worth the investment in money and time to learn how to play drums.
Not only is this package a great deal, it's a great deal on two must-have products. The book is written in the same casual, personable manner in which Tommy speaks on his DVDs, which keeps things lively and light even as the grooves get progressively more difficult. I am a neophyte drummer, but Tommy's clean charting style makes everything seem easy. Furthermore, the play-along pieces on the DVD are perfect; playing along with your favorite artists is one thing, but this DVD allows the beginner to really feel as if he or she is part of the band rather than just robotically following another drummer. Finally, Tommy's emphasis on grooves over fills (which come in time as your creativity and skills develop anyway) ensures that the student isn't distracted by the flashy stuff before learning the real business of rock-solid drumming. If you're even remotely interesting in learning to play drums or expanding your existing drumming skill-set, buy this package deal NOW before the publishers realize it's worth three times the price.
Great!!!
The only thing I did not like about this product was that I was expecting a cd, but had to download it online. I like the fact that it covers just about all you need to know on the drums.
CD didn't work. DVD didn't show the variations. But overall, a good book.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of June 2018: Reading ruminations on middle age and mortality is not typically a cheery exercise, unless David Sedaris is doing the writing. Many of the essays in Calypso are set at the “Sea Sectionâ€â€”Sedaris’s retreat on the Carolina coast. There, his family whiles away the holidays playing cutthroat board games, baking in the sun, and feeding tumors to snapping turtles (yes, you read that right). In others, he describes shopping shenanigans in Japan (you can thank him for the resurgence of the culotte, or not), his unhealthy Fitbit obsession, and a side vocation picking up trash near his Sussex home. All provide the sort of everyday fodder that is ripe for his beloved brand of witty repartee. But Calypso is as dark as it is droll; it also touches on his late mother’s alcoholism, his sister’s suicide, and a sometimes strained relationship with an irascible father. Any one of these things could fracture a family but it’s clear from these pages that their bond is strong. Calypso is David Sedaris’s funniest, most outrageous, most moving offering yet. —Erin Kodicek, Amazon Book Review

Review
"This book allows us to observe not just the nimble-mouthed elf of Sedaris's previous work, but a man in his seventh decade expunging his darker secrets and contemplating mortality...The brilliance of David Sedaris's writing is that his very essence, his aura, seeps through the pages of his books like an intoxicating cloud, mesmerizing us so that his logic becomes ours...The geeks really do inherit the earth."―Alan Cumming, New York Times Book Review"The king of the humorous essay returns with a brand-new collection -- his first in five years. Sedaris fans will find plenty of familiar delights: His misanthropic charms and wry wit are as delightful as ever, even if some of the subject matter has changed. From his new vacation home on the coast of North Carolina, he writes about the concerns of health and aging, treating us to a story about the persnickety doctor who refused to let him keep a noncancerous tumor that he'd planned to feed to a snapping turtle once removed. We can only assume that the audiobook version of Calypso will be the perfect travel companion during road trips and getaways this spring and beyond."―Maris Kreizman, New York Magazine"Age and family occupy beloved humorist Sedaris's latest collection of essays. His observations feel sharper and often darker than in previous collections, as he ponders the inevitable breakdown of the human body, the shame attendant with illness and age, the nature of addiction, and the eccentricities of his family. Though middle age may have made his shades of gray blacker, the wit and incisiveness that make Sedaris much-adored remain."―Lauren Hubbard, Harper's Bazaar"Killer...Sedaris is practically his own genre now...Whether it's a compulsion or a decision, Sedaris isn't holding back anymore."―Rachel Manteuffel, The Washington Post"Honest, reflective, and even tender...Eloquent and silly, Sedaris' collection could probably find unshakable life even in the dust kitties under the bed...He gets you laughing even as he gently turns you toward the darkness we all must face."―Caroline Leavitt, San Francisco Chronicle"David Sedaris's new essay collection is the sharpest retort to anyone who thinks they know what our favorite curmudgeonly humorist will be up to next. His charming observational humor is still the engine, but there's nothing frivolous about it. In the wake of his sister's suicide, Sedaris grapples poignantly and satisfyingly (and yes, often hilariously) with death, the aging body, and just how far the bonds of family can stretch."―Alex Postman, Conde Nast Traveler"David Sedaris's biggest strength as an essayist and a humorist lies in his remarkable power of observation, of detecting the humor and pathos is the everyday conversations most of us don't register. His attention and wit are as incisive as ever, but Sedaris brings a stronger sense of self to the pages of Calypso...It's both warmer and bleaker than any Sedaris that's come before."―Laura Adamczyk and Caitlin Penzeymoog, AV Club"If there's one thing you can count on in life, it's Sedaris to leave you giggling on the beach in both humor and horror. His latest collection of stories is a bit more serious than his previous, but even when the Sedaris clan is at its worst, the humorist reveals their antics with his characteristic wit in a way that manages to both soften and sharpen the dark truths behind the stories he tells."―Allison McNearney, The Daily Beast"Sedaris is widely considered is widely considered America's leading humorist, and his new book Calypso does nothing but burnish that reputation."―Nic Brown, Garden & Gun"Laugh-out-loud funny, true and introspective."―Holly Silva, St Louis Post-Dispatch

I felt like it was Christmas, my birthday and all the holidays rolled into one when I won a print copy of Calypso on Instagram from Little Brown a few months ago along with a ton of Sedaris swag - jackpot!! His first collection of essays in almost 5 years! I sat on it, and savored the cover and the early reviews, and finally decided to sit and get lost in it. Only knowing how sad I would be once I had finished.I LOVE every book he's written. I've gone to readings and shows more times than I can count, and I snatch up his books the minute I catch wind there is a new one. And I get way sad when I finish them. Because I devour them. I read them typically in one sitting and can't get enough. This one was devoured in about three hours flat. I know, I know. I should have paced myself. Savored it. But what I love the most about his witty stories - is those that revolve around his family. And this one is chock full of them - once I was in, it was all over. He delves into his deepest, tragic memories of his long passed mother, her alcoholism, his sister Tiffany and her 2013 suicide, his aging father, now in his 90s, and of course his sister Amy (love!) and his other siblings getting older as well. There's plenty of Hugh and snippets of the Hamrick family, and I felt a bit like I was getting the yearly family Christmas update letter of the Sedaris family - but with the good and the bad all mixed in with old memories and fresh ones being made...It's peppered with classic Sedaris social commentary including some relevant political stuff - Trump and Comey are both mentioned, but it is not the focus of the book. Most of the essays take place at the family beach house - The Sea Section (lololol) and recollections of the past are aplenty. Some of my favorite parts revolved around Davids FitBit obsession, his signature stage culottes, "Your English is So Good" a guide to REALLY learning the language, the story of a lipoma tumor, learning about that cover image, and how the title Calypso came to be. I found a lot of animal themes that I loved as well! Stories and references to dogs, turtles, sharks, kittens, a fox, and many more.I read several reviews that Calypso is "dark" but I felt it was more sad and somber, if anything. Not dark at all. As he gets older in life, his observational humor tends to head in that direction - aging, death, sickness, tragedy, tumors! But the sadness comes with a hearty does of one-liners and you will not be disappointed in this one! Dark and depressing - nope. not at all.Calypso is fresh, it's funny, and it was so real and so honest, that Me Talk Pretty One Day has been bumped from my top DS book and Calypso has officially taken the crown.
Some parts of this collection of essays are exquisite, and even I read them twice, but as always with Sedaris, it ‘s a mixed bag. “Your English Is So Good†made me howl. However, for some reason Sedaris has this fascination with people pooping. Such humor is not my cup of tea, so to speak. The essay “I’m Still Standing†made me gag several times (elderly people bepooping themselves in the close quarters of a crowded plane doesn’t tickle my funny bone, I’m sorry); furthermore, poop allusions can be found splattered across the text. Come on, David! That is just so juvenile, or maybe I’m just a squeamish prude. And I do understand that Sedaris is trying to bring out the humor that accompanies the decrepitude and disappointments of getting older and then of getting much older. Of course, most of it is black humor that can be a little depressing, but some of it is just straight-foward humor related to the ironies of life. Overall, I still recommend reading this collection because it contains more gold than dung.
If you love David Sedaris’ writing, I promise that his newest book of stories entitled CALYPSO will make you laugh, perhaps cry a tiny bit, and love him even more (which I didn’t know was possible), and wonder how can a grown man have the imagination of a child (a slightly twisted one) at times, anthropomorphize foxes but not think it necessary for him to be locked up, realize that his siblings share the same language and sick sense of humor and should be crowned as our own American royalty because their humor is so badass, and I am still holding out for a Sedaris family documentary written by David, starring David, directed by David but equally starring his father, sisters, his partner Hugh, and bit roles to Hugh’s mother and sister, as well as his brother Paul’s wife and daughter must be playing Sorry! as they do so well and absolutely get producer credit. If you need me, I’ll be re-reading CALYPSO. When you finish it and want to talk about escapades at his house in Sussex, their family trips to the beach on Emerald Isle, or when he and his sisters go shopping in Tokyo, think of me as your go-to virtual book club member.
This is a collection of essays mostly about family and relationships: between Sedaris and his husband; Sedaris and his siblings; Sedaris and his father. The author has the rare talent to make descriptions and observations about mundane day to day existence, extremely entertaining. Reading Calypso is like eating comfort food. It sits well and you don’t want it to end.Chief among the characters is paterfamilias Sedaris. The Sedaris clan are a close-knit bunch and as Sedaris states: their father waited until late in the game to steal their hearts. Growing up, their Dad was a somewhat detached figure. But with the passage of time and a softening of his edges; he is a lovable curmudgeon who regularly nags the author about looking after his health.Among my favorite passages were Sedaris’s reflections on: middle age, Fitbit obsession, shopping sprees and hanging out with family on vacation. Sales for the board game Sorry may have spiked as a result of his observations about game strategy and the play of his 12-year old “show no mercy†niece.Sedaris muses about his sister Tiffany. She was estranged from the family (what fun she missed out on!) and lived a hard scrabble, tragic life. Also, very sad, is his description of an unfettered public expression of racism that he witnessed as a boy after his family had settled in North Carolina. The only passage that didn’t work for me, was his comparison of swearing and cursing in various cultures. It goes on for way too long and it felt like filler material.Reading Calypso often made me laugh out loud and usually had me grinning. I wholeheartedly agree with one sentiment that Sedaris expressed; I have zero interest in hearing about the dream that you had last night.

Review
"Ken Mansfield and I unknowingly shared the experience of the famous Apple rooftop session. Ken was not only working for the Beatles through their heyday, he was also their trusted friend. There is no one better equipped to tell the Beatles' story truthfully—and more important—factually, from the inside." (Alan Parsons, Alan Parsons Project, Multi-Platinum producer and engineer to the Beatles/Pink Floyd)"Ken Mansfield worked in our offices in London and we crashed at his pad in Hollywood. We all hit it off immediately and he became an instant member of the Apple team. Even the Beatles took to him straight away. He is one of the few insiders left that bore witness to the highs and lows of those insane days when we ruled the world." (Jack Oliver, former president, Apple Records (1969-1971))"Ken Mansfield brings us a new and closely personal perspective not only on the Beatles, but on a whole cast of characters. I lived through those Apple years with Ken and we became friends. It is a pleasure to experience so much of it all again through the accuracy of his storytelling and the clarity of his memory." (Peter Asher, Peter & Gordon/A&R chief, Apple Records/producer-manager (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King))"Ken has a unique gift. He can take you in the room and you sit with the folk he knows and make you one of the gang, part of the plan. And considering these folk include the Beatles, that is some doing. I respect the affection he has for our game, and what he brought to it will get you." (Andrew Loog Oldham, manager and producer, Rolling Stones)

About the Author
Ken Mansfield has experienced a life that most people have only read about. He was in the heart and heat of the music industry when it was young and vibrant—back when creativity and passion made the music. A simple young man from the Indian reservation lands in Northern Idaho, Ken found himself propelled into the center of a Rock ‘n’ Roll whirlwind when as a Capitol Records executive the Beatles asked him to be the US Manager of their Apple Record label as well as acting as their personal liaison between the UK and the US. When the Beatles breakup seemed inevitable, he moved on to become a Vice President at MGM Records and then President of Barnaby Records a CBS label owned by Andy Williams. Wanting to fly even higher and faster, he left the corporate world to set up his own company, Hometown Productions Inc., where he produced famous artists of that era such as Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Don Ho, David Cassidy, Claudine Longet, Nick Gilder, The Flying Burrito Bros. and more. Ken is the author of six books including the top selling The Beatles, The Bible and Bodega Bay (Broadman and Holman) and The White Book (Thomas Nelson). Other titles include, Between Wyomings (Thomas Nelson), Stumbling on Open Ground (Thomas Nelson), Rock and a Heart Place (Broadstreet) and Philco (Post Hill Press.) Ken now lives, loves and writes on the beautiful Florida gulf coast with his wife Connie.

Admittedly, I'm a fan of Ken Mansfield's past work, which offers fresh and original takes on the Beatles. In "The Roof," Mansfield manages to top himself. It's hard to believe, but the Beatles' rooftop concert on Apple is approaching its 50th anniversary on Jan. 30, 1969. Ken was one of a handful of people on the roof that historic day. This book, however, is much more than about that one singular event: it's about his relationship with the Fabs, the formation of Apple, the "Get Back" sessions, filming for "Let It Be" and how they ended up on the roof. I really enjoyed this book and Ken's Lennon-esque style of writing.
This is the first book of Ken's that I've read, but won't be the last. The writing style is engaging and fun. It provides a rare look into the people behind the Beatles that you so often see in the various pictures scurrying around the band (most clearly in the video documentary "Let It Be") while at the same time giving insight as to how the FAB Four interacted with each other and the people that keep the business running. I can't say I'd really care to read about just any Band's activities behind the scenes, but Ken does a great job of taking you into a world that most anyone would have loved to experience, but at the same time, come out realizing what a long and winding road it was. I was initially interested in learning about what happened that day on a roof top when one of the greatest show on Earth took place. I learned not only what I was interested in, but also some really interesting history about England, and how the various individuals that made up Apple fit together. One question I would have loved to ask Ken is, "Who is the individual that pops in an out of the 'Let It Be' video documentary that has the spitting image of Woody Allen?" He appears in various scenes on the roof top, specifically, when the British Police make there way onto the roof, and appears earlier in the film while the recording of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is filmed as providing the talent for the hammer "bang bang" sounds earlier in the video. Caught my attention and I was hoping there would be a clue in the book. :)Update: After reading the entire book, I believe the individual that is standing by the entrance to the roof and, as I said, looks (to me) like Woody Allen, is Mal Evans, Apple Executive. As I mentioned before, he can be seen in the "Let It Be" documentary film banging the hammer during the filming of the Beatles recording "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". I thought at first that Woody Allen was in the studio that day and always wondered if it was Woody Allen. So, although I am green with envy, I have believe I have found the answer. Now, if only Ken would confirm it is Mal :) Crazy I know, but putting together the history behind some of the 60's bands can be interesting. Ken's book is certainly a great book in my opinion!Update (2). I just read one of the review postings confirming my suspicions. I can now sleep :) Thanks to that individual (Ken?). As I said, this book is great and a fun read.
Boring and very little about the Beatles. The author just recounts his time at Capital Records and Apple. When he FINALLY get to the concert the only remarks were about him and three others being the only audience members. Got tired of I,I,I, in just about every sentence. To be fair I got about 2/3 through and gave up. Have much better books to read.
Undoubtedly, the best book on the events surrounding the Rooftop concert! Ken takes the reader right to the "core of the Apple" with insights on everyone that was there in 68/69 and the very day that the Beatles performed. I loved every chapter and all the fresh insights-which i had never read before in any Beatle book. It's humorous and touching. Don't miss out on Ken's story- you will love it!
Ken Mansfield book ‘The Roof’, the story about The Beatles final live concert on the roof of the Apple Records building, is a great memoir by one of the few people to have personally witnessed this historic musical event. Filled with great insight by a person who was there during the early days of Apple, Ken brings the reader into The Beatles world with a lot insider observations. Through his remembrances, you feel like you are there on the roof watching The Beatles perform live for the last time. This book is a must for any Beatles fan’s library.
The Rooftop Concert has been dissected over the years as to what happened and what did it all mean. The Roof takes us into Apple Records to see how this concert came to be the way The Beatles wanted to end their Get Back recording sessions. You are sitting on the Rooftop as The Beatles set up for their final concert. Billy Preston joins the lads to lend his keyboard to the session. Yoko is off to the side to give her support to John. The Beatles start playing and that Beatles magic takes hold once again. In the end, they just hope they passed the audition.
The positive points about this memoir is the inside look you get of both the “Roof†event and the early days of Apple Corp. There were some new revelations for me here and little restating of already presented Beatles’ history. The negative here for me was the book wanders over the last third with a lot of personal musings that obviously were important for Ken Mansfield, but it took away from my overall rating. Still, worth a read for hardcore Beatles’ fans.
I didn't know who Ken Mansfield was (is). That was pretty interesting. The overall story is pretty interesting for any Beatles fan. The miss for me was the take on the actual performance. Mr. Mansfield missed a great opportunity to shed insights into the short time the Beatles played on the roof top. What where the changes between takes? Interactions between the band. Interactions with the small audience. I kept expecting that chapter. So interesting, but a bit underwhelming,

A must read for anyone with a teen on the spectrum!
Great insight.
Tells it like it is and is very up to date on all the facts you need to know about handling young people with this dreaded disease that has no cure.
I gave this only one star because after numerous calls to Amazon, I still barely see the pages. It is like reading thru a cloud!
Disappointed in the content. Honestly, there are no tips specifically for Asperger's. Honestly, this could be a parenting book, but not what I was looking for.I already know how to be a parent. I need more information about the nuts and bolts of the disorder and the proper way to help my son.If you need a basic understanding of parenting a child. This would be an okay book.
