This book can be used as the textbook for a New Testament survey course at the graduate or seminary level. David DeSilva provides a wealth of historical, cultural and literary background information to help us understand the 1st century message of each book in the New Testament. He helps us to think about the pastoral motivation behind each gospel and letter in the New Testament. What audience were these gospels/letters written to and what were the pastoral needs of that audience. These concerns helped shape the contents of each book that makes up our present New Testament. In addition DeSilva provides an easy to understand introduction to source criticism, redaction criticism, literary criticism, feminist criticism and many other tools of scholarship that help us understand the New Testament. I highly recommend this introduction to the New Testament.

I've had the great pleasure of being one of Dr. deSilva's students at Ashland Seminary and the somewhat lesser pleasure of having read nearly every chapter in this book in the process. The main weakness in this book is in the editing. The writing could be more concise and clear in many places. This makes it difficult to read from cover to cover, but presents less of a problem when using the book as a reference. It almost seems as if each chapter was written to stand on its own. Many of the same points are made repeatedly throughout the book as they apply to different books of the New Testament. That said, the book also has many strengths. At the end of each chapter is a section on "ministry formation" which draws practical lessons for ministry and discipleship based on the previous reading. I found these to be very insightful and the most interesting and valuable parts of the book. The "exegetical skill" and "cultural awareness" sections that are sprinkled throughout the book are also very good. Separating the exegetical skill material from the main text makes it easy to find and apply to study of parts of the NT other than the immediate context in which the particular sections appear.Overall this book is very good seminary level course and reference material that I know will be very useful to me in the future. It's a poor substitute for the lively and highly interactive teaching that you would get in one of the author's classes, but it's a lot less expensive.

DeSilva kept me hooked as I read through the New Testament letters. This text has been recommended now a few times to some of the guys around my church. As a pastor / teacher, and seminary student with an undergrad in Religion, I've compiled a few NT books and commentaries, and so far this has been at the top of the list. It's not a commentary, but is inviting in its approach to bring the reader into the setting, history, and in-depth context of each book. Certainly a worthy investment, in my opinion, to have in your study library.

Oh, I have used this for so many bible study references, its a great resource book to have.Purchased for NT class and glad the instructor insisted we buy, could not have made it through class without it.

Truly a testament to biblical scholarship. As a scholar of OT, this volume pulled me in and made connection I never even knew were there. If you're looking for a definitive guide to the NT look no further.

Let me begin by saying that I am enjoying the content of this book, but I am struggling with the digital format. While reading on a kindle/kindle app, the two-column text is tiny and very difficult to read. Further, if you zoom in too far, the text get pixelated. (I think they just saved the book as a PDF and uploaded it.)Conclusion: buy the physical version of the book.

This text brings into focus the context of the New Testament that will change the way you read and interpret it. I'm sure reading this will help my grade.

A deep dive without needing a PhD to understand.

Super helpful map that got us around Spain in a rental car. The green boxes around cities denote that there is something very worth seeing there. Follow those. The bigger the box, the bigger the city. We tried to avoid the big cities and see the smaller venues where fewer tourists go. We were not disappointed.

I'd probably give it 5 stars but I'm just one of those people that rarely does give anything a highest rating unless it's obviously the best thing I've ever encountered. This is a good map. It has a laminated cardboard "cover" which lends stability and will no doubt improve on longevity. The scale's good and includes some of the smaller roads which I was interested in and it highlights scenic routes which is great as I will be doing some motorcycle riding and this will help me decide those routes. Good level of detail with road numbering, sights, etc and the legend's in 4 languages. The entire southern half is on one side, the northern half on the other. It does not include zoomed in mini-maps of the cities so if you need city level information another map will be needed. It has a good index of all the cities/towns and includes all the islands and ferry routes.

Per usual, Michelin did a great job with the map. All roads shown including the very secondary roads. It pretty large, measuring about 42"x38", but you can't show all this detail with a smaller map in my opinion. Be aware it is not in English, but I expected that having purchased other Michelin European maps previously. I have a Garmin GPS for navigation, but sometimes you do need to check details when deciding exactly where to go before plugging in waypoints. Even though I love the GPS, I still like to see "the big picture" that you simply cannot see on a 5" GPS screen. And this is the latest 2013 version, so the new highways are all there.

Happy to see the 2012 edition is now available. Last issue was 2007 and lots of new roads, especially E highways have been built. Nice to know if getting from point A to B is necessary, but drive the two-lanes, they are much more interesting. Be careful when buying this Michelin 734 map as most vendors still have inventories of the 2007 edition and would like to get rid of them. The 2007 edition has a map of Iberia on the cover.

Even thought I had a new Garmin as well as the country SIM, I bought this (and one in France) as a back up in case my Garmin was stolen, lost, or quite working. The maps are great, clear, and sufficient detail and were a real help in planning daily trips. Note that you can also buy regional Michelin maps that provide even more detail.

A little to congested for what I wanted it for and hard to read when trying to ascertain what state you were looking up.I had been reading a series on the "Peninsular Wars" back when Wellington and Napoleon were going at it, and wanted to get an idea of the specific movements of their armies as they fought the many protracted battles and sieges.

The maps content is good, however I was expecting it to be of similar quality to the mapof Ireland I got from them which was made of a more water resistant paper and had the map on both sides. This is one sided which may be better for some peoples needs but for me, biking across Spain, more compact would have been better.

This map was very inconsistent in the numbering system. I thought it would coordinate with the guidebook, but it was just too small and not detailed enough. The route numbers were all over the place and often did not correspond with the roads we were actually on. Often there were connections through the many round-abouts that were not indicated on the map. It was also very difficult to tell which roads were toll and which were not. All in all, very confusing.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of May 2015: Most people recognize the famous black-and-white photo of the Wright brothers on a winter day in 1903, in a remote spot called Kitty Hawk, when they secured their place in history as the first to fly a motor-powered airplane. That brilliant moment is the cornerstone of the new masterful book by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough, who brings his deft touch with language and his eye for humanizing details to the unusually close relationship between a pair of brothers from Dayton, Ohio, who changed aviation history. Bicycle shop owners by day, Wilbur and Orville taught themselves flight theory through correspondence with the Smithsonian and other experts. But the brothers soon realized that theory was no match for practical testing, and they repeatedly risked life and limb in pursuit of their goal—including when Orville fractured a leg and four ribs in a 75-foot plunge to the ground. McCullough’s narration of ventures such as this—their famous first flight at Kitty Hawk; the flight in Le Mans, France that propelled the brothers to international fame; the protracted patent battles back at home; and the early death of elder brother Wilbur—will immerse readers in the lives of the Wright family. Like other great biographies before it, The Wright Brothers tells the story about the individuals behind the great moments in history, while never sacrificing beauty in language and reverence in tone. – Manfred Collado

Review

“A story of timeless importance, told with uncommon empathy and fluency. . . . A story, well told, about what might be the most astonishing feat mankind has ever accomplished. . . . The Wright Brothers soars.” (Daniel Okrent The New York Times Book Review)“David McCullough has etched a brisk, admiring portrait of the modest, hardworking Ohioans who designed an airplane in their bicycle shop and solved the mystery of flight on the sands of Kitty Hawk, N.C. He captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished and, just as important, the wonder felt by their contemporaries. . . . Mr. McCullough is in his element writing about seemingly ordinary folk steeped in the cardinal American virtues—self-reliance and can-do resourcefulness.” (Roger Lowenstein The Wall Street Journal)“The nitty-gritty of exactly how [the Wrights] succeeded is told in fascinating detail.” (Buzzy Jackson The Boston Globe)“Few historians have captured the essence of America — its rise from an agrarian nation to the world's dominant power — like David McCullough. . . . McCullough has defined American icons and revealed new dimensions to stories that long seemed exhausted. . . . An elegant, sweeping look at the two Americans who went where no others had gone before and whose work helped create a national excellence in aviation that continues today." (Ray Locker USA Today)"McCullough’s magical account of [the Wright Brothers'] early adventures — enhanced by volumes of family correspondence, written records, and his own deep understanding of the country and the era — shows as never before how two Ohio boys from a remarkable family taught the world to fly." (Reeve Lindbergh The Washington Post)“[McCullough] takes the Wrights’ story aloft. . . . Concise, exciting, and fact-packed. . . . Mr. McCullough presents all this with dignified panache, and with detail so granular you may wonder how it was all collected.” (Janet Maslin The New York Times)“David McCullough’s The Wright Brothers is a story about two brothers and one incredible moment in American history. But it’s also a story that resonates with anyone who believes deeply in the power of technology to change lives – and the resistance some have to new innovations.” (Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google)"McCullough vividly re-creates the failures and disappointments as the Wright brothers puzzle out the scienceof bird- and insect-wing design. . . . [McCullough] continues to deliverhigh-quality material with familiar facility and grace." (Larry Lebowitz The Miami Herald)"An outstanding saga of the lives of two men who left such a giant footprint on our modern age." (Booklist (starred review))“[An] enjoyable, fast-paced tale. . . . A fun, fast ride.” (The Economist)

I enjoy McCullough's works which tend to be thorough, eminently readable and informative but often on the long side. This one, however, is quite short in comparison and since much of the material is based on the personal papers of the Wright family it can get a bit bogged down in repetitive minutiae. While the engineering and mechanical accomplishments are certainly impressive, I really had no idea how much study and experimentation went into their accomplishments. I would have preferred a bit more insight into their personal issues such as why neither brother ever married, why Orville felt so betrayed once his sister did marry at age 58, why the litigation aspect of their inventions became such an obsession, etc. I don't know If I ever knew and forgot but during the process of proving the worth of their work one of their passengers became the first person to die in an "aeroplane" crash (Orville severely injured). Also interesting that they were far more accepted in France than in the U.S. during those early days but skeptics did abound, even there.

David McCullough is one of the preeminent American historians of our times, the deft biographer of John Adams and Harry Truman, and in this book he brings his wonderful historical exposition and storytelling skills to the lives of the Wright brothers. So much is known about these men that they have been turned into legends. Legends they were but they were also human, and this is the quality that McCullough is best at showcasing in these pages. The book is a quick and fun read. If I have some minor reservations they are only in the lack of technical detail which could have informed descriptions of some of the Wrights' experiments and the slightly hagiographical tint that McCullough is known to bring to his subjects. I would also have appreciated some more insights into attempts that other people around the world were making in enabling powered flight. Nevertheless, this is after all a popular work, and popular history seldom gets better than under McCullough's pen.The book shines in three aspects. Firstly McCullough who is quite certainly one of the best storytellers among all historians does a great job of giving us the details of the Wrights' upbringing and family. He drives home the importance of the Wrights' emphasis on simplicity, intellectual hunger and plain diligence, hard work and determination. The Wright brothers' father who was a Bishop filled the house with books and learning and never held back their intellectual curiosity. This led to an interest in tinkering in the best sense of the tradition, first with bicycles and then with airplanes. The Wrights' sister Katharine also played an integral part in their lives; they were very close to her and McCullough's account is filled with copious examples of the affectionate, sometimes scolding, always encouraging letters that the siblings wrote to each other. The Wrights' upbringing drives home the importance of family and emotional stability.Secondly, McCullough also brings us the riveting details of their experiments with powered flight. He takes us from their selection of Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a flight venue through their struggles, both with the weather conditions and with the machinery. He tells us how the brothers were inspired by Otto Lillienthal, a brilliant German glider pilot who crashed to his death and by Octave Chanute and Samuel Langley. Chanute was a first-rate engineer who encouraged their efforts while Samuel Langley headed aviation efforts at the Smithsonian and was a rival. The Wrights' difficult life on the sand dunes - with "demon mosquitoes", 100 degree weather and wind storms - is described vividly. First they experimented with the glider, then consequentially with motors. Their successful and historic flight on December 17, 1903 was a testament to their sheer grit, bon homie and technical brilliance. A new age had dawned.Lastly, McCullough does a fine job describing how the Wrights rose to world fame after their flight. The oddest part of the story concerns how they almost did not make it because institutions in their own country did not seem to care enough. They found a willing and enthusiastic customer in the French, perhaps the French had already embraced the spirit of aviation through their pioneering efforts in ballooning (in this context, Richard Holmes's book on the topic is definitely worth a read). Wilbur traveled to France, secured funding from individuals and the government and made experimental flights that were greeted with ecstatic acclaim. It was only when his star rose in France that America took him seriously. After that it was easier for him and Orville to secure army contracts and test more advanced designs. Throughout their efforts to get funding, improve their designs and tell the world what they had done, their own determined personalities and the support of their sister and family kept them going. While Wilbur died at the age of forty-five from typhoid fever, Orville lived until after World War 2 to witness the evolution of his revolutionary invention in all its glory and horror.McCullough's account of the Wright brothers, as warm and fast-paced as it is, was most interesting to me for the lessons it holds for the future. The brothers were world-class amateurs, not professors at Ivy League universities or researchers in giant corporations. A similar attitude was demonstrated by the amateurs who built Silicon Valley, and that's also an attitude that's key to American innovation. The duo's relentless emphasis on trial and error - displayed to an almost fanatical extent by their compatriot Thomas Edison - is also an immortal lesson. But perhaps what the Wright brothers' story exemplifies the most is the importance of simple traits like devotion to family, hard work, intense intellectual curiosity and most importantly, the frontier, can-do attitude that has defined the American dream since its inception. It's not an easy ideal to hold on to, and as we move into the 21st century, we should always remember Wilbur and Orville who lived that ideal better than almost anyone else. David McCullough tells us how they did it.

McCullough has written a serious and riveting review of the lives of Wilbur and Orville. His writing style is concise, thorough, and unpretentious. I was able to read it easily and enjoyably and learned many things about the Wright family that I didn’t know. The book was thus valuable to me.FAMILYMcCullough makes it clear that the Wilbur and Orville were a product of their family environment. Their father was the major influence. Milton Wright was a minister and finally a bishop in the United Brethren Church in Christ.McCullough writes — “He was an unyielding abstainer, which was rare on the frontier, a man of rectitude and purpose— all of which could have served as a description of Milton himself and Wilbur and Orville as well.”His strict values molded and focused the views of the three younger Wrights (Katherine, Wilbur, and Orville). In addition to his strictness, he was a true classical liberal in his beliefs in the scientific method and equal rights for all people, no matter their race or gender. For example, Milton wrote to his sons when they were in Paris trying to get support for their flying machine: “Sons—Be men of the highest types personally, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Be clean, temperate, sober minded, and great souled.” As grown, experienced, and highly successful inventors, they responded: “Father — All the wine I have tasted since leaving home would not fill a single wine glass. I am sure that Orville and myself will do nothing that will disgrace the training we received from you and Mother.”McCullough writes — “Years later, a friend told Orville that he and his brother would always stand as an example of how far Americans with no special advantages could advance in the world. ‘But it isn’t true,’ Orville responded emphatically, ‘to say we had no special advantages . . . the greatest thing in our favor was growing up in a family where there was always much encouragement to intellectual curiosity.’ ”BUSINESSMcCullough records Wilbur’s thoughts on being in business in a letter to his brother Lorin in 1894:“In business it is the aggressive man, who continually has his eye on his own interest, who succeeds. … There is nothing reprehensible in an aggressive disposition, so long as it is not carried to excess, for such men make the world and its affairs move. . . . I entirely agree that the boys of the Wright family are all lacking in determination and push. That is the very reason that none of us have been or will be more than ordinary businessmen. … We ought not to have been businessmen.”In 1911, Wilbur wrote:“When we think what we might have accomplished if we had been able to devote this time [fighting patent infringement suits] to experiments, we feel very sad, but it is always easier to deal with things than with men, and no one can direct his life entirely as he would choose.”The Wrights never built, or even tried to build, an industrial empire as Ford or Edison or their Dayton neighbors John and Frank Patterson (National Cash Register) had done. The Wrights were intellectual men and women.ENGINEERINGMcCullough's book is quite light on technical discussions. But the Wrights' unique approach to technology development is the essence of who they were and why they were such successful engineers when others better funded, better educated, and better connected failed. For example, McCullough ignored the following examples.Wilbur and Orville were superb engineers, though neither went beyond high school. They found by trial and error that the existing data held by the science of aeronautics was flawed even though its principles were generally correct. They zeroed in on weight, power, control, lift, and the propeller as the main technologies that had to be solved. What is so astounding is not just that they solved these technical problems and reduced them to practice, but that they did it in record time. In a matter of three years, they invented or reinvented virtually the whole field of aeronautics. For example, the wind tunnel had been invented thirty years before, but Wilbur and Orville developed it into a precise quantitative instrument. With it, they developed not just the wing configurations, but coupled with the understanding that a propeller is simply a wing on a rotating shaft, they rewrote the rules of propeller design and optimized its efficiency dramatically. These two men had an insight into, and a reverence for, quantitative empirical data that was unique in aeronautical engineering at that time.McCullough shows how that reverence for truth (data) grew out of their family standards. But there was more to it than the principles of a strict Protestant upbringing. It also has to do with time and place. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of great minds applying the rules of The Enlightenment and the experience of science to practical problems. The place was an industrial axis, which was anchored by Dayton and Detroit and included Flint, Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and many other cities in the Midwest. This is where Edison, Ford, Dow, Firestone, the Patterson Brothers, and the Wright Brothers lived and created their technologies. There was a culture of boundless innovation and an infrastructure that included materials and support equipment that fostered great invention. It was similar in many ways to Silicon Valley today.REINFORCE THE NARRATIVEAnother area that could be strengthened in the book is its niche. There has been so much written about the Wrights that each new book needs to distinguish itself in some way with a different point of view, a new set of facts, or a fresh interpretation of old facts. For example, McCullough writes — “In early 1889, while still in high school, Orville started his own print shop in the carriage shed behind the house, and apparently with no objections from the Bishop. Interested in printing for some while, Orville had worked for two summers as an apprentice at a local print shop. He designed and built his own press using a discarded tombstone, a buggy spring, and scrap metal.”That last sentence about building his own printing press defines so much about Orville and his simple pragmatism. To reinforce that point requires some expansion of that event or similar other defining events in the lives of Wilbur and Orville. I wanted to read more about Orville's compulsive act of invention, but it wasn't there. The 81 photos McCullough includes in his book are treasures. Many of them are familiar, but so many are new looks at the Wrights. I wish there were greatly expanded captions below each photo, for each one is a story in itself. One source of knowledge about the Wrights’ approach to aeronautics is the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. It is normally overshadowed by the more popular Air and Space Museum in Washington, but the exhibits at the Air Force Museum walk you through the Wrights’ engineering exploits with a degree of detail and insight I have found nowhere else.

A good map of a difficult region to map out, with enlarged map portions for various island groups. However, it isn't super-specificfor very small islands, and there were several tiny islands we went to, in Papua New Guinea's Louisiade Archipelago, which were barely indicated on the map (by a tiny dot) or not at all. I think I'd almost need a detailed atlas for getting those on a map.I am not sure that such an atlas even exists.I was on a National Geographic expedition to the region (its first to these specific islands) and even the maps in the ship library had very little detail, although the islands were shown.I think that for most purposes, this map would be just fine. I like the way it groups islands together according to which nation they belong to, by using a line border around nation-groups. This map makes the region more easy to understand politically.

This map will only be useful to you if you don't have any other basic resources, like a general world atlas or travel guides, at home. The main map itself shows the entire South Pacific region, with country boundaries clearly marked, but individual islands reduced to the size of dots.Major islands are shown on inset maps, however even these are still tiny - you will find bigger, more detailed, and more accurate maps of the same islands (and many more) in travel guidebooks to this region by Lonely Planet or Moon.In short, unless you just want a general map to hang on your wall, don't waste your money on this one!

This is a great map. We studied this area in homeschool this year. This map worked perfectly.

This is a pretty detailed map. I bought it to plan a vacation around the Fiji islands and it provided me a good overview of how the islands are located relative to neighboring islands. The map folds out nicely and everything is labeled clearly. Contrasts are good and islands are not too small.

Being able to track my family as they sail around the world .

A great map for getting around this part of the world. It's big - the area - so the map by definition cannot be too small-scaled. But if you only want to carry one map - this is it.

It's exactly what it says it is - a map of the Pacific Islands to show the general geography of the area, but not in as much detail as a guide book. These maps are hard to find but I got exactly what I wanted. It shows a big map of the Pacific Islands plus smaller maps of specific islands in more detail. The only thing I would like it to show which it doesn't, is the markers to show where Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia are(although without having all of NZ in it, obviously the bottom of the Polynesian triangle would be cut off.)

Useful map in planning travel in the Pacific.

One of my favorite books. The art is beautiful!

I received this book as a gift in high school, unfortunately someone stole it from me. When I found it on here I was ecstatic. It has all of Poe's best works and the artwork is bright and vivid and just beautiful.

I am a fan of Greg Hildebrandt's illustrations. Which to my opinion are absolutely beautiful.Poe's stories are in my memory from high school. Alway intense sometimes frightful but will remain as litature's favorites.

The artwork is beautiful and the cover is seems to be felt like all around a beautiful book :)

I'm not sure why this book costs so much on this listing. You can buy it brand new directly from the publisher, Easton Press, for about $ 240.

This book is not worth the read as it is another book that provides limited information. For $0 dollars you can find the same information by searching on google. The author provides extremely bare bones basic knowledge. He emphasizes the fact that dividends are great passive income but provides no information for picking stocks. While the information is basic the author does not outline basic fundamentals associated with picking dividend stocks. The entire book involves picking stocks off of the dividend aristocrats list but provides not fundamental analysis for analyzing and picking these stock. Just telling people not to seek or chase high yields is common sense. But the other does not outline the most basic concepts such as payout ratios and cash flow. This is a boring read that will not increase your knowledge of investing.

This book had a lot of good information about dividend investing. The author listed several companies that paid out dividends, and he gave strategies for what to do when the market was down (buy stock instead of selling, and don't panic). Dividend investing is a good way to build wealth over the years.Matthew gives sound advice in his book, and I intend to follow it. Great book, and I highly recommend it.

Very clear, concise, and complete guide to dividend paying stocks and how to invest in them. No fluff or filler. The author's other books are useful, too.

I purchased this book thinking that there might be some content of interest to a person when considering investing in stocks for their dividend yield. Unfortunately, what I found was some extremely basic investment advice that was simplified to the point of being misleading (e.g., attributing dividend returns to the growth in value of a portfolio that was almost certainly driven quite substantially by capital appreciation). There was almost no discussion at all of portfolio construction beyond picking either an ETF or a handful of the "dividend aristocrats". The author explains some basic investing concepts like dollar cost averaging, but there is nothing in this book which makes it worth the price tag. The Investopedia page on "Introduction to Dividends" actually contains more information about how dividends work than this book. If your investing knowledge is at the level where this book is actually helpful for you, you would be better served with a general book on investing rather than one targeted specifically toward dividend stocks. On top of all this, the author uses large font with lots of white space on the page in order to inflate the page count (as well as a large section full of ads for other books). It took me about 30-45 minutes to read through the whole thing, and I'm usually a slow reader.

This is an excellent book. Very easy to read and understand. Matthew R. Kratter explains things so a beginner can understand. Highly recommend this book.

This book is quite simple to understand. Among all the stock's investment, high dividend stock's investment is probably the only easy and low risk way to get returns. Timing makes all the difference.

Book has some good info for beginners. Especially the chapter about buying aristocrats when they go lower. It's worth the time to read

This is another excellent book from Matt Kratter, easy to understand like he said it's simple and it's powerful. If you want an automatic cash flow wealth builder, following his strategy.I would recommend reading this book!

Christopher Bram’s Hold Tight: A Novel is a curious thing. Most novels with gay themes that I’ve read have contemporary settings. They also deal with romantic relationship. Hold Tight, however, is set during WWII, and it is essentially a spy story. Yes, there is a romance, but it mostly propels the plot, rather than being the plot. Bram has taken an interesting premise—gay men in the Navy during the great war—and turned it into a tightly written, well-plotted story. Hank is a lanky enlisted man from Beaumont, Texas, who is naïve and very gay. I say “very” because in a time when being gay was a hidden thing, Hank is very open to his shipmates and to the world. Because of this, he is drawn into a government plot to snag German spies. Hank is placed undercover in a gay brothel with the hopes that some of his clients will be spies, and thus the government can apprehend them and their contacts. The rest of the intrigue is quite compelling. And the character development is wonderful. There is a love story, a friendship, a possible murder. And along the way, the US government’s dealing with the whole thing parallels Hitler’s treatment of the Jews and other “undesirables,” as Hitler termed them. Hold Tight makes us question the US government in that time. It also has a ton of sexual tension between Hank and his handler, Eric. And all is resolved in the end to satisfaction. This novel by Gods and Monsters author Bram is a good read.

This book was about the beginning of WW II. But it showed not only the problems of shortage the black outs and fear of espionage. It showed the prejudice of the country not only against Germans and Japanese but the use of what are now considered politically incorrect terms for other ethnic groups. The biggest group of people was handling those who where gay. Arrest and lock up the transvestites. Send the man with strong sexual tendencies or doing act of sodomy to the mental hospital. Give them electric shock or worse a lobotomy, so they would have no personality or life. To see how the gay men would meet and live in fear or just hide them selves among others. The other interesting part how the government would try to hide acts and other things from it citizens, rather than be exposed to discussion or evaluation of their way of solving a problem. Many gays do not understand even the difference in gay life right after stone wall. Many changes have come and the road ahead has many problems that need to be resolved.A good historical fiction. Recommend this book to every one, It is an eye opener.

On first glance, the lead character in this story appears to be simple, one-dimensional. But for those who care to pay attention, he is multi-dimensional and full of surprises. His accent might make him appear to be a hick from the sticks, but Frankie is smart. He watches, he listens and he learns. Frankie is skilled at hiding his sexuality until captured by the Shore Patrol one night in a house where men go to rent rooms by the hour to have sex.He is used through the majority of the story when he is forced to work as a prostitute by the Navy in an effort to find spies. The friendship he strikes up with his primary "handler" turns out to be rich and lasting and was also a joy to read.

This is bitter sweet story, old yet current. Life is better for many of the hank's and Erich's of this world, and dreaming isn't fulfilling. I suppose, however visions do empower action. Hugs to both of them. May we all continue to strive for a better today.

For me this was a novel about how a good person can be ground up by the cold forces of institutions, intrigue and privilege. The simple, goodhearted and naturally uninhibited protagonist is manipulated cruelly, and is saved only by subversive decency. The ending, while not really happy, is appropriate to the story.

this was a great peak into the past and what role the gay men could have in war time.great spy novel with the added gay story line.Bram has never disappointed me.big thumbs up

The lead character serves as the modern view into the attitudes and prejudices of the 40s, with the war and a potential Nazi spy ring as a background to an examination of race and sexuality in the middle of the 20th century. Smart and well observed.

This was a good book, much more depth than I anticipated. Well constructed, some suspense & a good ending with somewhat of a surprise. I liked the realism of the characters & the historical setting dealing with gay life of that time period. A good read!
