Christopher Bram’s Hold Tight: A Novel is a curious thing. Most novels with gay themes that I’ve read have contemporary settings. They also deal with romantic relationship. Hold Tight, however, is set during WWII, and it is essentially a spy story. Yes, there is a romance, but it mostly propels the plot, rather than being the plot. Bram has taken an interesting premise—gay men in the Navy during the great war—and turned it into a tightly written, well-plotted story. Hank is a lanky enlisted man from Beaumont, Texas, who is naïve and very gay. I say “very†because in a time when being gay was a hidden thing, Hank is very open to his shipmates and to the world. Because of this, he is drawn into a government plot to snag German spies. Hank is placed undercover in a gay brothel with the hopes that some of his clients will be spies, and thus the government can apprehend them and their contacts. The rest of the intrigue is quite compelling. And the character development is wonderful. There is a love story, a friendship, a possible murder. And along the way, the US government’s dealing with the whole thing parallels Hitler’s treatment of the Jews and other “undesirables,†as Hitler termed them. Hold Tight makes us question the US government in that time. It also has a ton of sexual tension between Hank and his handler, Eric. And all is resolved in the end to satisfaction. This novel by Gods and Monsters author Bram is a good read.
This book was about the beginning of WW II. But it showed not only the problems of shortage the black outs and fear of espionage. It showed the prejudice of the country not only against Germans and Japanese but the use of what are now considered politically incorrect terms for other ethnic groups.The biggest group of people was handling those who where gay. Arrest and lock up the transvestites. Send the man with strong sexual tendencies or doing act of sodomy to the mental hospital. Give them electric shock or worse a lobotomy, so they would have no personality or life. To see how the gay men would meet and live in fear or just hide them selves among others.The other interesting part how the government would try to hide acts and other things from it citizens, rather than be exposed to discussion or evaluation of their way of solving a problem.Many gays do not understand even the difference in gay life right after stone wall. Many changes have come and the road ahead has many problems that need to be resolved.A good historical fiction. Recommend this book to every one, It is an eye opener.
On first glance, the lead character in this story appears to be simple, one-dimensional. But for those who care to pay attention, he is multi-dimensional and full of surprises. His accent might make him appear to be a hick from the sticks, but Frankie is smart. He watches, he listens and he learns. Frankie is skilled at hiding his sexuality until captured by the Shore Patrol one night in a house where men go to rent rooms by the hour to have sex.He is used through the majority of the story when he is forced to work as a prostitute by the Navy in an effort to find spies. The friendship he strikes up with his primary "handler" turns out to be rich and lasting and was also a joy to read.
This is bitter sweet story, old yet current. Life is better for many of the hank's and Erich's of this world, and dreaming isn't fulfilling. I suppose, however visions do empower action. Hugs to both of them. May we all continue to strive for a better today.
For me this was a novel about how a good person can be ground up by the cold forces of institutions, intrigue and privilege. The simple, goodhearted and naturally uninhibited protagonist is manipulated cruelly, and is saved only by subversive decency. The ending, while not really happy, is appropriate to the story.

The lead character serves as the modern view into the attitudes and prejudices of the 40s, with the war and a potential Nazi spy ring as a background to an examination of race and sexuality in the middle of the 20th century. Smart and well observed.
This was a good book, much more depth than I anticipated. Well constructed, some suspense & a good ending with somewhat of a surprise. I liked the realism of the characters & the historical setting dealing with gay life of that time period. A good read!

The Golem and the Jinni is a genre bender. There is a lot of historical fiction woven in, so if you are looking for a straight fantasy novel this may not be for you.The writing in this book reminds me a lot of The Bear and the Nightingale in that it felt very atmospheric as well as giving off a strong classic fairy tale vibe. This book has a very slow pace overall, most of the action happens in the last 15% of the book. The author gives of us a lot of backstory interwoven with the characters present day actions, and none of it is really tied together until the end. The ending was sort of fantastic, like the lynch pin that holds everything together. For these reasons, this book will take patience to read.The characters take time to grow on you. Maryam Faddoul, Arbeely, and the Rabbi I liked right from the beginning, but the Golem and the Jinni you grow to love over the course of novel and again, it isn't until the end that you really feel anything for them.My only real issue with this book, involves big spoilers so read ahead at your own risk: The deaths of Michael Levy and Dr. Saleh seemed to be glazed over. No real gravity was given to their deaths. They seemed so tragic in that they were completely innocent and Dr. Saleh's was completely heroic, but none of the characters in the book seem to acknowledge their deaths or their sacrifices and this kind of bothered me. I personally didn't feel much about them one way or the other, and I felt like I should have. I should have wanted to cry about it but I didn't, which is why I gave the book overall 4 stars and not 5.
My new favorite book of all time.Yes, it's got a slow pace, that worked out for me. As and adult, I can only read on my lunch breaks. If I came back to the book over the weekend, I'd have no problem jumping right back in. Perhaps if I tried to read it all in a day, I'd find myself a little annoyed. The pace picks up at the end though...I'd say around the time of the dance.We get pretty in depth with all these characters early on, finding out their backstories and all, but Wecker's prose makes it a joy. And every character we get to know shines in the end. This is a cast of essentially good people. They believe in the goodness of humanity and want what's best for others. This is not at all a cynical book. It's about freedom, and people who are just a little odd finding ways to be themselves in society.Ice Cream Saleh, Anna, Arbeely, they are all awesome to read about, but the titular Golem and the Jinni really so shine as characters. The Jinni's impulsive, passionate, is endlessly curious about humanity despite thinking himself as superior to it, values freedom and life. The Golem is a new soul, also curious but more cautious, so empathetic it hurts, and is naturally a protector. You want them to meet, and then you want them to be happy together. They are believable as friends or as lovers. They bicker a lot, but have a lot of respect for one another too.This book makes me grin so wide even a month after finishing it.
The Golem and the Jinni is an extraordinary combination of historical novel (set in New York City during the height of immigration) and fantasy. Bptj the historical and fantasy elements are strong and credible. Wecker does a great job at establishing the novel's constraints and sticking to them. But beyond the mechanics, her storytelling expertise is stunning - especially for a writer's first novel!!! The characters are revealed through action and dialog in the most natural way. The pacing is perfect, the transitions between story-lines seem effortless. Through all of this, she manages to tell a compellingly complex story both from the perspective of the fundamental plot lines and in her development and maturation of the main characters.As I was reading it, I even found myself deliberately slowing my reading pace down so that I could savor the novel, to better appreciate Ms. Wecker's artistry. I sincerely hope that she doesn't wait another 7 years to produce her second novel!
I found this book enchanting and beautiful to read. The story is interesting, the characters are well developed and relatable, and it's set against the background of 2 fascinating cultures. The premise is this: golems come from the Jewish mythology, which tells that a particularly skilled rabbi can create himself a servant by animating a clay image of a person. The jinni is a disembodied, supernatural being from the Middle Eastern mythology, and can be enslaved by humans through the use of magic. They both find themselves in the immigrant communities of New York, trying to find their place in the world, torn between their true nature and the need to blend in among beings that are so similar and yet so different from them.I found the snapshots of daily life in the Syrian and Jewish immigrant communities fascinating, I learned much I didn't know about them. The way the author interweaves the magic and mythical part into the mundane was very well done. The book is just well written, start to end, I couldn't find any faults in it. I look forward to this author's future books, but this will be a hard act to follow!
The story was interesting, if a bit slow moving. The writer has a bit of slow, fluid way of writing, which works for the story overall, but some of the scenes just seem so...unnesscary.The Golem's story, almost entirely throughout, is very unique and you can really feel some sympathy for her. Even very small little scenes really enrich your idea of her.But the Jinni...the whole side thing with the heiress seemed so pointless to the book overall. His attitude and artistry were interesting, amusing and illuminated his character, but the heiress seemed only to fill up some pages till he finally met the Golem.

This tale introduces the Fibonacci sequence in a simplistic tale which can be fascinating to children and adults. These numbers are also mentioned again briefly on a back page as in the number of petals in a daisy, etc. inviting more investigation into nature. Some children may not learn about this until they study higher math, if in fact they do, as well as other associated principles. Fibonacci was a great Italian mathmatician.

This is a delightful book that introduces the idea of the Fibonacci sequence to children.
I loved this book. On it's own it's a fun story with great illustrations, but throw in the educational content and it is amazing. What a fun way to make Fibonacci accessible to children. I am a big fan of "living math" books and this is a must have for any living math library.
McCallum does an excellent job of blending an entertaining children's story with the Fibonacci pattern. Rabbits Rabbits Everywhere keeps your mind working from beginning to end. It's a fascinating, fun math theory tale with rich illustration children will read again and again. Destined to be in every classroom!
I am teaching the Fibonacci Sequence to students, and this was a great story and visual. I am teaching this to third graders, and this story helped them understand Fibonacci's rabbit question.
I don't remember why I ordered this, but I'm quite thankful I did. It's such a joyous piece of literature.
One of the pages came out the first time I read it. It's good for an extension for lessons on patters for upper elementary.

The book covers all of the important capabilities of Simulink, including subsystems, masking, callbacks, S-Functions, and debugging. The book is meant to be used with Simulink 5 and subsequent revisions. The examples were produced with Simulink Version 5.0. Simulink is a programming language specifically designed for simulating dynamical systems. Therefore, in order for you to use Simulink effectively, you should have the appropriate mathematical preparation. We assume you have a good understanding of the concepts usually covered in the introductory courses in calculus and differential equations. However, as many new users of Simulink may be unfamiliar with block diagram notation, we included a chapter that introduces the notation. USING THE BOOK Here, we offer suggested reading sequences for new users of Simulink, for users experienced with a previous version of Simulink, and for advanced users ready to take advantage of all of the power of Simulink. New Users It is possible to model fairly complex systems with basic proficiency with Simulink. The fastest way to gain this basic proficiency is to adhere to the following sequence: If you are new to block diagrams, read Sections 2.1 and 2.2. These sections introduce block diagram notation and illustrate using block diagrams to model scalar continuous systems. Carefully work through all of the examples in Chapters 3 and 4 to master the mechanics of building and running models. Read Sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.4 and experiment with the examples. After completing this material, you should be comfortable building and running models of scalar continuous systems. As you gain proficiency with Simulink, complete Chapter 2, then work through the rest of Chapter 5 and Chapter 6. If you have access to Stateflow, work through Chapter 14. If you have access to Real-Time Workshop, work through Sections 15.1 through 15.3 and read Section 15.4. If you have access to xPC, also work through Section 15.4. Experienced Users If you are experienced with a previous version of Simulink, or, if you are a new user, after you have acquired basic proficiency, we suggest you proceed as follows: Read Section 3.4. The new help system provides detailed online documentation for all Simulink blocks. We believe that you will find the help system to be easy to use and to be a real time saver. Review Chapter 4. The Simulink user interface has many improvements over the previous version of Simulink. Pay particular attention to Section 4.8 concerning selecting and configuring a solver. Scan Chapters 5 and 6. Pay particular attention to Section 5.2.1. Read Sections 7.1 and 7.2, then work through Sections 7.3 and 7.4 in detail. Learning to use conditionally executed subsystems will allow you to build efficient models. Read Chapter 8, even if you don't plan to use the analysis capabilities right away. You may well discover that the analysis tools will make your use of Simulink much more productive. Read Chapter 12 carefully. The new debugging features can save lots of time. Review Chapter 13. An understanding of the numerical issues can allow you to build models that are faster and more accurate. Advanced Users If you are already experienced with Simulink 5, we suggest you proceed as follows: Scan Chapter 4 to review the basics of model building, and scan Chapter 13 to review the numerical issues. Read Chapters 7 and 8 to review subsystems, masking, and Simulink analysis tools. If you intend to build graphical user interfaces or interactive animations, read Chapter 9 and study the examples. Review Chapter 10, particularly Sections 10.1 through 10.4. Even if you don't need to use S-Functions right away, understanding the capability will allow you to recognize situations in which S-Functions are appropriate. I bought this to help me learn Simulink and while it did help, it doesn't very little in helping you get started learning. This book goes into detail about each block and gives you the "life story" of said block. It doesn't really touch on how to connect multiple blocks together into a working simulation and it barely touches upon items such as the model workspace, the block library interface, it doesn't touch on how to tie Matlab scripts into a model, etc. If you are just starting with Simulink, this is not the book for you. If you already semi-know how to use Simulink and you want a more detailed knowledge about each block, then this might be of some help.
This is the best Simulink text book that I have found for those interested in learning it or just to keep as a reference.
Bought this to help me boot my Simulink 'kung fu'. This really did help me get up and going quickly.
Not the best ever. Does not flow smoothly. I ended up returning it. Kind of a bummer. I think there are some better books out there.

The story would have been interesting but there are so many editorial errors that it makes it hard to read with the normal flow. I bought the entire series and will not purchase further from this author due to the errors. After reading the first 3 books in the series, they all have about the same story line in different settings and many many edit misses. I am now reading book 4 which appears to be better but some words are used too many times in the story such as "Ninny". I have read Amish books exclusively for the past 3 years and have not seen this word appear in any of them before this set. So disappointed.
Why must you make me cry? For a wonderful story with so much heart, I guess I shouldn't be surprised when the tears come. Heartfelt joy, heartfelt agony, heartfelt love. That's what you are going to get when you read this book.

What interests me most about those reviews is that this book is all about grace and the people leaving negative reviews still miss the point. They don't give grace on what they disagree with.Phillip Yancey's use of stories and modernized parables help paint a picture of grace that, if I'm honest, I knew already...but I never really envisioned. This book and the idea he presents are both game changers for the Christian community, and in our society today it couldn't be more relevant.Read this book. Buy this book. Live this book.
This is the fifth book I've read by Philip Yancey, and they've all been sizzlingly alive and inspiring. Many types of Christian books annoy me: they're either heavy-handed and doctrinal, or simplistic and trite. In contrast, Yancey stands on the same scruffy ground the rest of us stand on, and he tells stories about people we might know or might be. Sadly, the history of the Church contains much ungrace, which has driven and still drives people away from Christ. Yancey says, "...the Gospels make clear the connection: God forgives my debts as I forgive my debtors. The reverse is also true: Only by living in the stream of God's grace will I find the strength to respond with grace toward others." Yancey also points out the danger of mixing politics and religion. Though the book was published in 1997, it rings hauntingly true today: "...while a coziness between church and state may be good for the state, it is bad for the church....The state which runs by the rules of ungrace, gradually drowns out the church's sublime message of grace." Trans-formative. I thought I knew Grace but I did not. This book is thorough. It could almost have been a lot shorter of a book but the stories in it do make it for an interesting history lesson also which I am enjoying. I have to say this book is transforming my paradigm about being a Christ follower, being an effective father of 2, loving husband, and as a community leader. Philip Yancey was a recommended read from a friend - and I have pretty much decided I like is writing style and what comes across as honesty to himself about his own life and the experiences he has had trying to follow Jesus' teachings himself.
This is one of the most inspirational books that I have ever read in my life and if you're looking for God and Grace this is the perfect book to explain and help you grow in HIS outstanding love for you and I.Highly recommended as a self read or a gift for someone going through a hard time. This book was so beautiful that (despite hording all of my favorite books) I couldn't help but pass it on.
This book came highly recommended by my wife and from a member of Peace Church. Yancey says that he would rather convey grace than explain it, which is why he writes with stories rather than syllogisms (Yancey 1997, 16).There are certainly a lot of stories in this book. Part one is about the sweetness of grace. Yancey tells the story of Babette, a woman who served as a housekeeper for twelve years for two sisters, Martina and Philippa. The sisters had lived difficult, graceless lives. Babette wins the lottery, and the sisters fear she will leave. But Babette spends all the money on a lavish French feast for Philippa and Martina and their guests in honor of the anniversary of their father's birth. Grace came to them in the form of a feast and in the form of a loyal friend (Yancey 1997, 19-26).Yancey tells the story of Peter Greaves, who was angry at God and life because he contracted leprosy while stationed in India. But he testifies that he experienced grace through music while at Bible college. He played piano for hours on end. He also experienced grace through the beauty of nature, as he walked through pine forests, watching dragonflies and flocks of birds. He then experienced grace by falling in love and these experiences gradually led him back to his childhood faith in Christ (Yancey 1997, 40-42).Yancey also tells a modern day version of the prodigal son story, where a teenage girl runs away from her home in Traverse City, Michigan. She heads down to Detroit, gets into drugs and prostitution to make ends meet. But she misses her family. One day, she writes her parents and tells them that she will be taking the bus home. She arrives at the Traverse City bus station at midnight. She is shocked to discover her family and about forty other relatives waiting for her, wearing party hats and saying "Welcome home!" She hugs her dad and tries to apologize, but he says "There's no time for apologies. We need to get home and celebrate. There's a big banquet waiting for you" (Yancey 1997, 49-51). That's grace.Part two deals with breaking the cycle of "ungrace." Yancey tells stories of people who lived bitter, miserable lives because they harbored anger and could not forgive (Yancey 1997, 75-81). Yancey says that we should forgive because forgiveness offers a way for us to start broken relationships over and to heal the hurts of the past (Yancey 1997, '98-99). He tells the story of Jean Valjean, the French prisoner from Les Miserables, whose life was transformed by grace (Yancey 1997, 101-2).There is also the story of Rebecca, whose clergy husband cheated on him with a woman named Julianne. She was bitter, but she phoned them one day and "I choose to forgive you." Years later, Julianne phoned Rebecca to say that the man had been doing the same thing to her and she needed someone to tell. The women got together, and Rebecca led Julianne to Christ, and they became friends (Yancey 1997, 104-6). That is grace.The rest of the book is in the same vein, pictures of grace, mixed with the occasional picture of ungrace. The researcher has already used the Les Miserables story in a recent sermon, but this book is a veritable treasure trove of grace stories that can be mined for future sermons. But taken as a whole, What's So Amazing About Grace? was one of the most enjoyable and heartwarming books on the reading plan.
What's so amazing about Grace? Without Grace we are nothing. Grace is the forgiveness of ALL sins through Jesus Christ. Can you imagine what that would feel like?This book is a must read for the Christian community, because most of us have forgotten or never really knew what Jesus was talking about.For non-Christians it's an introduction to the greatest gift mankind has ever been given. Free to all, no church membership necessary - in fact, you may actually access the gift more readily. We, Christians are not so free with dispensing Grace, a gift from God, through Jesus Christ.You cannot come away from this book unchanged, it's impossible, I beg you to read this book, you deserve to know that you are loved regardless of your past.
