It is obvious that the author has tremendous respect for the ways the communities he has worked with manage local resources.Within these pages is a treasure trove of sustainability solutions for pressing land use and natural resource management challenges that we can all learn from. Overall, this book left me inspired of the wonders of science, field research, and the cultural practices of communities who have intimate relationships and knowledge about their surroundings.
Great read. Dr. Peters does a wonderful job of blending the scienticific with the anecdotal. I oftentimes felt I was in the forest with him. He shows great respect and affection for both the forests and the people who inhabit them. As the book went on, he seemed to grow as a scientist and as a human being. It left me wanting to read more about his life and his adventures.
Very accessible, each chapter stands alone. I 'm not a scientist but I do love trees (I have acreage in the Sierra Nevada mountains) \impressive fortitude on these various projects with no apparent footsteps to follow, just good science.
The author and scientist, adventurist-Chuck Peters- takes you on a journey into the many global remote forests of our planet. He introduces you to the people living in these regions, many are faced with the struggle of survival-living off the what the earth provides, and the fact that the world has demands on their resources. The scientist comes to the rescue, by providing ways learned from the inhabitants of these forests, he combines their traditional ideas with modern scientific ones to create a realistic, sustainable way to manage the wilds. A great read by an extraordinary person who is committed to preserving the wild habitats, by facilitating a possible solution for healthy world forests and to benefit those whom are dependent on it, as it turns out, people like you and me. Great story about an awful event and provides a thorough review of how cases proceed and navigate. The problem is the authors’ writing style. They repeat themselves to ad nauseam. Likewise, the authors struggle with paragraph development. Many themes take a hard left mid paragraph, only to be repeated three more times. Tragic story and educational value: 5 stars. Writing style: Two and 3/4 stars. It was a GREAT 250 page book that lasted 400 pages.
Class Action is one of the best books I have ever read. I simply could not put it down once I started reading it. The story, itself, is gripping. If this were a work of fiction, it would stretch the imagination to believe that such things could happen. The fact that this is a true story just stuns the reader to the depth of the soul. But, beyond the nature of the story, is the excellent writing. It is as engrossing as the best novel - cohesive, fast paced & intelligble. There is just enough legal background and explanation given to make the events understandable to the lay person without making the book a lesson in Civil Procedure. I cannot recommend this book too highly. Thank you to the authors for bringing this story to the public in such an empathetic and understandable way, and to the women of the story who changed the lives of all human beings for the better.
Extremely well written that it provides a historical record. We forget how far we've come and those who fought before us.
Excellent book. Written very fast-paced while giving a ton of detail.
I assume that you will have seen the Movie first. I would have never heard of this book, without references in the DVD. BUT it is not necessary that you see the movie first. AND if you see the movie after reading the book be prepared for differences. But aside from comparisons, this is a terrific read about the first successful Sexual Harrassment case in the USA. It is set in the North Country made famous by Mr. Zimmerman. In fact some of the scenes and some of the characters are from Hibbing. Hero is one of the many misused words in Americana. But hero could be safely applied to the Lawyers who defended Lois Jenen.
This is a great read, a page turner, and heartbreaking saga of women's endurance and sacrafice.
My wife was high school best friends with the heroine of this story. Ergo, I have access to more complete information than revealed in this story.Still, it is much more fact than fiction, despite the 'poetic license' sometimes exhibited by the author. Sometimes the author was simply denied access to the whole truth. In the end, the story unwinds in this book much as it did in real life, but some of the details aren't always right on target.This was a landmark legal case that changed things on a national scale, and as such it can be viewed as history.And the history as put forth in this story is clearly more accurate than what was presented in the movie "North Country", which is another telling of the same tale.The writing is good enough to carry the book, even if it were totally fiction. But it's not -- I can recommend it.

This book is excellent at teaching ANTLR, I only wish the author had re-ordered some of the chapters to teach you critical concepts first. Much of this book feels like an extremely long sales pitch instead of actually trying to teach you something.In chapter four the author is showing a lot of cool things that ANTLR can do for you, and the grammars that help accomplish that. However, he does not officially teach you how to write a grammar until chapter five. Chapter six shows you how you could use ANTLR to parse existing syntaxes, but it does not really teach you anything new. I wish the author had condensed his sales pitch to five pages or less, instead of dedicating whole chapters to it. In other words, I would have put chapters four and six somewhere farther back in the book, and focused on really teaching you the syntax of ANTLR grammars, and how to use its features.Despite that, the book did a great job of explaining how to write ANTLR grammars and use them in your code. All of the online documentation I found on ANTLR was horrible, trying to get by without this book is crazy. Along the way, I came to love ANTLR as a tool, since it could save me a ton of development time, and since it supports so many great features. It's just a really powerful tool by itself.I would highly recommend this book to anybody.
I have no formal training in computer science but have been mucking with them since core memory times. This book is a joy to read (I am slow and had to read it a couple times.) The language is immensely powerful but very easy to use. I was able to translate the book java to C# easily and write a solution that I needed by sundown without knowing anything about lexing or parsing till I got to page 13 early one morning. On page 14 I learned that "you can't put too much water into a nuclear reactor." The co-author Sam Harwell has done the C# translation and the Visual Studio bits. Also look at antlrworks2 tool. It is amazing that something so powerful is free. After reading this, I bought the author's other popular book: "Language implementation patterns" and learned a lot more. There is a large public domain library of ANTLR4 grammars for a host of situations so you may not need to start from scratch. If you are trying to write code to parse stuff, stop playing with RegEx's and learn this.
I hadn't really worked with parser tools in over 20 years, and the last time I used Lex/Yacc it was painful enough that I just hand coded my parser.It turns out that Terence Parr seemed to have a similar experience, and decided to do something about it. ANTLR4 is an amazingly powerful tool for parsing. The reference is a great place to start to develop your own *.g4 ANTLR grammar file.I found getting a parser using ParseTreeListeners was pretty easily accomplished, and the resulting JAVA code can be given to other non parser folks (the Listener code you write... not the auto generated stuff). In the past I always found anything associated with lexx/yacc/bison was too convoluted to explain to anyone. But ANTLR4 care and feeding is human managable.The one issue I have with the language deals with large HUGE files which consume too much memory. I'm trying to figure a way to use parse tree listeners and "dump" the parse tree periodically. The solutions for large files currently appear to require you use grammar actions, which are great, and easier to develop than the parse tree listeners... but ANTLR4's advantage over ANTLR3 is that you don't have to put any parser actions into the grammar... I find that a bonus, but that seems to limit processing for large files.
This book is a definite purchase if you want to get into ANTLR4 quickly, or if you aren't very experienced working with lexer/parsers. The content is well written, and goes into much more depth than what you get from the ANTLR documentation online. It has definitely helped me get up and running in a very short period of time.There is just one shortcoming in this book: it is very difficult to find exactly the information you're looking for.- Want to know how to import grammars? Well that's clearly under the "Matching an Arithmetic Expression Language" section of Chapter 4: A Quick Tour.- Want to split a lexer and parser into separate files? I know I read that *somewhere* in this book, but now I can't find it. Let's turn to the index and look up "options", but there's no entry for "options" in the index. Ok, found it under the "Grammar" index heading.Maybe I'm nitpicking, but when I'm buying a Capital-D Capital-R Definitive Reference of anything, I'm expecting to be able to navigate easily to the information that I need quickly. This book suffers shortcomings in these three things:1) The book needs a more detailed table of contents that includes section subheadings, which is where all the useful detail headings exist.2) The book needs a better cross-referenced index. Put an "O -> Options -> See Grammar Options" so that new readers aren't penalized for not yet having a firm grasp of a new vocabulary they're trying to learn. Good indexes are actually a helpful learning tool.3) The Reference portion of the book could use it's own TOC, or a cheat-sheet with corresponding page reference within the book. Often, you forget the exact thing you're looking for, and seeing a grouped list of keywords is helpful when you're trying to get something to jump out at you and jog your memory.As a result of these shortcomings, I'm more frequently turning to Google to find what I'm looking for because this book makes you work hard to find what part of the reference has the references you need to refer to. I would say that this is a flaw in any reference book, not a feature.

Volume #2 starts off light-hearted enough, but will quickly change into a more dark arc as Amir's family comes a-calling...It shows us how one side of the family views arranged marriages as a need for political power and money. While the other side of the family shows us a more loving and nurturing side to marriages. This volume touchs base on just about everything; from Amir to Karluk to Mr. Smith and even the little ones get some spotlight! Well worth the read!
This is my favorite manga, the attention to detail, historical accuracy, and interesting characters are all amazing
'A Bride's Story' is not a typical, cliche manga. There is a solid plot with real heart and lovingly-rendered art in this series. The historical setting and its characters is original and full of fascinating details of the real culture of this region. For those who like their manga with real craftsmanship and storytelling quality, 'A Bride's Story' can't come more highly recommended.
If you have read the first volume of this then you already understand the beauty of this manga, how ever if you have not then let me explain. This manga is like a masterpiece of painstakingly detailed art every page, with great story to go along with it. This manga can be enjoyed by either men or women, it may be pink, it may be named "A Bride's Story," but if you are willing to give it a chance then you will not be disappointed.
And the content is super sweet to me. I'm actually fed up with silly puppy romance in manga so that I haven't read manga for a long time. Then I found this book and I'm drawn to it. It's not only beautiful in drawing but the plot is also plausible. The context of the manga is also quite historical, which is absolutely not boring if you like ancient knowledge. What else can I say? I have never bought any manga, but reading this online, I knew I had to get it. I'm so satisfied with this hard cover book. It makes the manga more elegant? I'm bad at words. I love it. Kaoru Mori is such a devoting artist. I do not remember names, but I know such a mangaka.
A Bride's Story is a slice of life story and this volume stands pretty well on it's own, with the key situational elements easy to pick up on. That said it is a direct continuation from volume 1 and features the same characters, so it's best to start there.** This review contains no spoilers either volume. **Volume 2 continues to follow Amir as she adjusts to life in her new village with her young husband and new family. The first half picks up the pace a bit from volume 1. The spotlight is on Amir further integrating into her new home and the ties she's formed, culminating in a touchy political situation with her former family boiling over. As always Mori's focus is firmly on the characters and everything evolves naturally from their reactions to unfolding events. The second half quiets down again with enchanting chapters about swirling emotions and the weight of tradition, and ends with a change in the status quo. I really enjoyed everything here, and it's little character moments and the depth of emotion conveyed that elevates this manga to something unique and special. The accessibility Mori gives to a time period and way of life that is very strange to today's mindset is a wonderful accomplishment in itself.Adding to A Bride's Story's impressiveness is the most amazing art I've ever seen. Perfect composition and flow, an absurd level of detail, and incredible facial expressions and body language. Every panel of every page is carefully designed and of extremely high quality.Overall the second volume of A Bride's Story is just as great as the first and expands its engaging look into Amir and Karluk's world and lives.Highly recommended.

I study comics about women and girls from a scholastic standpoint, so when I picked up Volume 1 of this series, I was impressed with, not only the artwork, but Amir, this interesting, empowering character. But this empowerment goes downhill with the start of Volume 2 and only plummets further with the subsequent chapters. As a rule, this is how most shojo manga narratives run:1. Woman/Girl is strong, independent, and effective as a protector and leader.2. Woman/Girl meets a naive, weak, or immature man/boy.3. Woman/Girl slowly falls in love as the man/boy matures.4. Woman/Girl gradually becomes more dependent on the man/boy.5. Man/boy rescues woman/girl, who has become weak and helpless. Her helplessness makes the man/boy appear strong.6. Woman/Girl tries to be noble and strong but is ineffective. Her male love interest must rescue her repeatedly throughout the series.6. Story ends with "rightful" gender roles in place.This story is heading in this direction like many other female-centric manga. It saddens me that Amir is going to be forced into the traditional role of damsel in distress. Mangaka have the power to change this sexist and inaccurate dynamic by not following such cliche conventions, but rarely do they ever deviate. If you want a series that empowers women, read the first volume, then find something else. "A Bride's Story" completely removes its focus from this amazing character and transforms her into the "weaker sex." For more empowering, female-centric manga, I recommend "Revolutionary Girl Utena," "Sailor Moon," "Maximum Ride," "Cardcaptor Sakura," and "Magic Knight Rayearth." Sexism aside, the story is turtle-paced unless Amir is at the center.With all that being said, the artwork is amazing and unrivaled. Few artists from around the world could match Mori's skill. But she needs better writer...
