Recommended by my doctor as a diet for dementia and general health. If you buy only one by Dr. Perlmutter, buy this one. It has recipes and his explanation of why he recommends certain foods.

and I've read his first two books. A thoughtful progression from Grain Brain and Brain Maker, and built on the essential principals of these previous works. Others can comment about the nuts and bolts advice of diet, exercise, and sleep. I am contemplating how I need to adjust my life to handle stress better, on account of the revelation in this book of Dr. Perlmutter's personal health crisis, which landed him in the hospital. He shares what happened in his life that may have contributed to this event, and of the power of love and compassion to heal. The story is captivating, and profound. It made me think of my whole life plan - am I in a place where I can truly love and minister to others, and is there needless stress I must be rid of? Because our health depends on these things as well as diet, exercise, and proper sleep. Thanks, Dr. Perlmutter, for sharing more personally in the book, as well as for all the updated information! May the power of gratitude to you be evident in this review!

One of the best books I have ever read. I have lost 8 lbs in 14 days on the no glutten, no sugar, smart fats, lo-carb plan, all organic, grass fed food items. I can't believe it - it only took 1 week to take away all cravings for wheat items (pretzels for me) and sugar. Sugar is in so many foods. Now I clearly see that after years of failing dieting, this nutrition plan and decontaination of my household and beauty items, is the only way to live healthy. I mean who wants to wear petroleum made products on their face and hands or in the containers where they put food? I used to gain weight counting points on Weight Watchers because they do not teach you healthy smart eating selections. and I craved food all day long. Not anymore. I am satisfied with this new way of eating. I also decontamined my house (better filters, threw out all plastic containers and chemical cleaners, black covered pots and pans). Dr Perlmutter has changed my mind-set on healthy living. THANK YOU DR PERMUTTER. Forever grateful.

Permutter is pulling it all together for us in this new and quickly changing view of the microbiome, ketogenic diets, hypothyroidism, etc. Couldn't be a better read for the money.

As usual the world's leader in neurological health offers a straight forward, balanced program for preventing, stopping and reversing dementia, heart disease and the majority of autoimmune disorders. I love Dr. Perlmutter's style laced with humor and relatable examples to make his points. This is a perfect mate for "Grain Brain". Read both for your life long wellness.

Amazing! I have changed my diet because of this book. Such an eye opener!! Highly recommended!

The wave of the future folks. How and why to clean up your meal plans to become healthier and stronger.Dr. Perlmutter is one of the most renowned Neurologist with extensive experience in research and Functional medicine. Lots of good information, helpful tips. The newest of his many best seller Grain Brain books. Get the book, get the understanding of what to do, get really healthy!!

was even better than his previous books.....excellent guide to a better life

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill: Defender of the Realm, 1940-1965, by William Manchester Paul Reid

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The second volume of the late Manchester’s Churchill biography (The Last Lion: Alone, 1988) left its audience in suspense with Churchill’s appointment as British prime minister in May 1940 and in anticipation of how Manchester would present Churchill’s and Britain’s finest hour in WWII. Foiled by illness, Manchester tapped Paul Reid, who has magnificently completed Manchester’s work. Opening with a character sketch of Churchill in his multifaceted guises of sentimentality, egotistical insensitivity, and brilliance, Reid dives into Churchill’s war leadership in 1940 that is the cynosure of his place in history. Reid’s got the research right, down to the day, down to the minute. He shows Churchill defying Hitler and appeasers––the French leadership and figures in the British government––who even in 1940 thought peace could be arranged with the triumphant Nazis. As Reid chronicles Churchill’s public speeches, communications, and strategy sessions, he affords regular glimpses at Churchill’s private aspects—his wittiness, sybaritic consumption of scotch and cigars, and moods bordering on depression. If reading Churchill’s life after 1945 entails an unavoidably anticlimactic quality, Reid nevertheless ably chronicles its main events of writing his WWII memoirs and assuming his second premiership of 1951–55. Manchester was one of the best Churchill biographers, and this capstone to his magnum opus ought not be missed. --Gilbert Taylor

This is the third volume in a three volume series, a biography of Winston Churchill, begun by William Manchester. When it came time for the third volume, health problems forced Manchester to seek assistance--and Paul Reid finished the work after Manchester's death. Despite that sad history, the book works well and completes the trilogy very well. This volume covers Churchill's life from 1940 until his death in 1965. At the outset, Churchill is named Prime Minister, achieving the goal of a lifetime. The book begins with the grim reality of the start of the Second World War. Poland had been overwhelmed by the Wehrmacht. England and France finally had the gumption to take a stand against German, declaring war on Hitler's Third Reich. Churchill moved British troops to France to protect Western Europe from what Churchill referred to as "the Hun." As we know, the German Panzers, using Blitzkrieg, devastated the Allies' defense, and many British troops barely escaped at Dunkirk. Then, the story really begins, with Churchill rallying the people back home with his rhetoric, his confidence, his will. The Battle of Britain, the loss of territory in the Pacific to the Japanese (Singapore, Burma, and so on), the loss of major warships to Japanese planes. . . . At the same time, German U-boats began destroying goods and food being shipped to Great Britain by cargo vessels. A time of great peril. Again, the volume highlights Churchill's efforts to rally his people and get the Americans to provide support. The story in this work considers the double cross by Germany against its erstwhile ally the Soviet Union and the awkward alliance of Great Britain with the Soviet Union. The odd triangular relationships among Franklin Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, and Churchill is well described. Including the seeds of future problems as the leaders jockeyed for position. And the war effort itself. We read of the African campaign, with Edwin Rommel dueling English forces. What would be the plan after that? We read of Churchill's intense efforts to carry out his strategic vision as to military efforts and the increasing head butting between him and the Americans (and, later, the Soviets). One of the hallmarks of this book is the graphic depiction of Churchill's idiosyncrasies and how hard he could be toward his aides. He was single minded and often created misery in others as a result. Over time, the book makes clear the shift in power from Great Britain to the United States, and the tensions thereby created. The story of World War II and Churchill's role is well told. So, too, is the stunning fall from power after Germany's defeat, Churchill's years in the wilderness, and his reaccession as Prime Minister )PM). His age was a burden in his second time serving as PM, but he persevered. The family problems and his declining years are well told. All in all, a most estimable biography. Reid served well in completing Manchester's final volume in the Churchill series.

I have been nervously awaiting this book for years. My first encounter with Manchester came when volume one first came out. I was a child, and I went to visit my grandmother (who was in London during the Blitz); she held the book up to show me what she was reading. "The man." she said. "The great, great man."Years later, I read the first two volumes almost in one sitting - couldn't put them down - and have reread large parts of them over the years (every time I looked some piece up I'd find myself sitting down for an hour or two because I couldn't stop). I remember when Finest Hour reported that the trilogy would never be finished: it was like a punch in the stomach.I had my doubts about the ability of another author to write worthily of Manchester, and I was afraid this volume wouldn't measure up. No need to worry: this is every bit as much a page-turner as the last two volumes. It's not QUITE Manchester - I thought I could feel a bit of a difference in style, somehow - and yet it IS extremely good, much better than I had expected.Like the first two volumes, we begin with a preamble ("The Lion Hunted") in which we are (re-)acquainted with the book's subject. There is a certain amount of repetition of material from the two earlier preambles, but much good new material as well. I've read thousands of pages on Churchill, but even I found some good new anecdotes and quotations here. After that we're hurled right into the middle of the most dramatic days of World War Two. The unexpected, catastrophic defeats; the incompetence and perfidy of the people in charge of France - it doesn't take much from a writer to make this an exciting story, and yet I don't think it has ever been told better than this. Really, just what I had hoped for from Manchester himself. If the later parts of the book don't quite keep the same level of excitement, neither do the events they recount. My only complaint is the ending: really, the book just stops. Read the end of volume II: I would have expected Manchester himself to end with a climactic summary, perhaps returning to his major insight from the start: the central significance of Churchill in history is that he was a product of the late nineteenth century who was able to bring the virtues of the era of his formative years to life again at a time when they were needed, and when the British people were not yet too far from them. Actually, I do have one other complaint, and it's with the publisher: the dust jacket doesn't match the first edition dust jackets of the first two volumes. Doesn't look as good on the shelf as I would have liked. All in all, this is a worthy final volume. Manchester himself would be proud, and there can be no doubt that this trilogy would be Churchill's favourite biography. Highly recommended, to fans of the first two volumes and newcomers alike.

This is an excellent finale to the three book series. I have read an awful lot about Winston Churchill by now. He was by no means a perfect person and this book does not represent him as such. But when it is all said and done,,,, Charles DeGaulle, (who had a complicated relationship with alot of the leaders of the Allies), had the band play Fr'ere Victoire when Churchill came to Paris.... And said it was "Only Justice" that it was so.Papa Victory....Father of the Victory pretty much summed it up. He stood up to Hitler when England was all alone and many in England were trying to figure out how they might arrange a truce. The darkest days of the initial German Invasion... he was in France as the Prime Minister.... He undertook grueling airplane trips to meet with Roosevelt in North Africa and Canada.... he went to Moscow via Africa.... he was not a young man at the time... I was impressed by many things about Churchill, his leadership. His willingness to put his own bacon in the fire without hesitation.... he was a great man and I don't think he is appreciated for how great he was.

I listen to baseball on the radio. For the Texas Rangers, we are completely fortunate to have, for the last 40 years, the amazing Hall of Famer Eric Nadel. In 2018, the Rangers were rebuilding with a young team, so some radio "diversionary tactics" was thought necessary to help keep us, the audience, engaged & entertained. And thus Eric began the "8th Inning Limerick of the Day". It was such a fun moment of every game. We'd have to wait for a pause in action for Eric (and sometimes Matt Hicks) to get the limericks in. So great, haha! This is the collection of the topical & timely & witty limericks that we heard over the radio each game this past summer. They are not only about the Rangers but also includes teams we played like the Dodgers & Yankees & Astros, among others. There are non-baseball limericks, too, like about the World Cup Soccer matches. Eric invited some "pinch hitters", some famous names & listeners who contributed, as well. It's really a fantastic book with some fantastic illustrations.

If you like hearing "That Ball Is History",Then this will not be too much of a mystery. The book is real great, you don't have to wait.Just buy it and you'll have a victory !Great add to my collection of books written by Eric Nadel !

The DFW area has been blessed with the vocal talents of Eric Nadel for decades, and as a baseball broadcasting nerd I’ve considered myself fortunate to catch he and Matt Hicks on the air since I moved here, but never moreso than this past season when they started doing limericks about the games they were calling. It made a rough season enjoyable! Now, we have a compendium of the creativity that Mr. Nadel came up with all summer long to have with us forever to remind us of the good parts of a sometimes trying summer! The comedic aspect is by far the best part, but to fit it in around baseball, rhythm and rhyming is absolutely phenomenal. Let’s not forget the fantastic illustrations either! It’s the perfect “color commentary” to the limericks’ “play by play”. If you’re a baseball fan or a fan of creative prose, this book is worth the money for the hard copy!

Speaking as a forever Texas Rangers fan, 2018 was a season that ranked near the top of forgettable years. Fortunately, radio listeners were treated to the Rangers Hall of Fame broadcaster Eric Nadel's 8th inning "Limerick of the Day" during each game. The collection of 8th inning limericks and the exceptional artwork that make up this book are a real winner!

This is an interesting take on baseball and local and national music scenes! The limericks are creative and get the reader thinking about topics they are likely already familiar with, but in a different way than before. Eric shows his ability to write brief, rhyming poetry to reflect his vast knowledge of the history of baseball! Overall, it's a fun read that any baseball fan should have to refer back to over-and-over again....this book will leave you with a smile!

Having been a FAN of Eric Nadel's for many years, this book is just one more way to enjoy him, his thoughts and the fun and dedication he brings to the game of baseball. It is a great read and lots of fun. Thanks for putting this together for us to enjoy.

If you enjoy baseball and the off beat comedy and the art of Mad magizine, this is for you.Eric Nadel, Hall of Fame radio play by play voice of the Texas Rangers, creates funny, family friendly rhymes to chronicle his life in baseball journey.

This book is awesome! Eric Nadel hit it out of the park with this one. If you are a baseball and/or sports fan like I am, this is a must have book for your collection. I'm really excited to gift these books too. I just ordered 2 more.

The Eighteenth Century was less hindered than our age by copyright restrictions. Thus much of what Benjamin Franklin, in his "Poor Richard" persona, published was in fact gleaned from earlier writers. Never mind that: these witticisms and pithy sayings are genuine Americana and well worth reading -- and owning. This inexpensive Dover edition is far from comprehensive, but what's in it is good.

So many nuggets of truth. Many of these short sayings have been passed down to is over hundreds of years, yet so many people have no idea that they were attributed to Benjamin Franklin. These are words to live by and if you haven't read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, please do yourself a favor and read it. It's available for free.on Kindle, and is arguably the best autobiography ever written.

I had no idea how much of American culture and my upbringing came from this small book. With famous phrases like "glass houses" and "no pain, no gain" and insight like "If Jack's in love, he's no judge of Jill's Beauty" and "Historians relate, not so much what is done, as what they would have believed," I found myself highlighting way too much. I have found myself referencing and re-reading sections of the book, only a week or so after finishing it. It's worth going through thoughtfully and slowly, just like "Dark Souls."

This is the first item I've ever returned to Amazon, out of hundreds of items we've purchased here. To be clear, I'm talking about the softcover "Poor Richard's Almanack" published in "print on demand" format by General Books ([...]Apparently the contents were scanned by an optical character reader, and clearly no human bothered to look at the resulting text, as the pages are filled with typographical errors and odd layout. I'm not talking about the differences between Colonial English and modern American English, I'm talking about incorrect substitutions of "d" for "c," multiple words run together without spaces, etc. This is inexcusable. The uncredited introduction was apparently written by someone whose first language is not English, and parts of it are practically indecipherable. Not so important if you're reading for the B. Franklin content, but again, inexcusable. This "book" is only about 1/8" thick, and that includes five blank pages at the back. The type is 10 point Times, which is very small for anyone who has difficulty reading small print. Although printed with the "print on demand" process, the soft cover and interior pages are good quality. This might be worthwhile if you picked it up for $1 or $2 at a rummage sale, but otherwise you may wish to find a more usable version of "Poor Richard's Almanack."

A Great Almanack ! A Smart Man He Was > The Proverb"s and Verse"s Apply Even Today , Good Word"s of Wisdom To Contemplate in your Mind !!!!!!

This little book contains much wisdom. Benjamin Franklin was a treasure and a very impressive man. He is, indeed, remembered fondly as one of our greatest Founding Father!

There's a reason why it's such a classic. The wisdom in this book is timeless.

****** The following review is for the small hardcover version of "Benjamin Franklin Wit and Wisdom" which sells on Amazon for about $4.70, not for "Poor Richard's Almanack".******If you learn 50% of what's in this book, you'll learn 90% of what life's all about half the time. Except math. Really, EQ or IQ, B. Franklin was probably the savviest American that ever lived, and anyone can learn from this little book. Especially Congress.

The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness

Review

Walter Freeman believed that "the despair of psychiatric illness demanded a decisive, drastic remedy." And that remedy was lobotomy, "cutting the neural connections in the prefrontal regions of the brain," a practice that these days, writes Jack El-Hai in The Lobotomist, "seems so obviously wrong." Freeman performed nearly 3,500 lobotomies and "aside from the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele . . . ranks as the most scorned physician of the twentieth century." And yet, "many of the era's most important medical figures . . . lent support to Freeman's work." Nor did he intend to cause harm. "I had to recognize," writes El-Hai, "the persuasive evidence that at times he acted in the best interests of his lobotomy patients, given the limitation of the medical environment in which he worked and the perilous nature of scientific innovation." (Washington Post Book World, March 18, 2007)

Praise for The Lobotomist "Written with such clarity and engaging detail that a reader has difficulty in putting it down." —The New York Review of Books "One of the many virtues of El-Hai's text is the rich detail he provides about Freeman's life and ideas." —Los Angeles Times "Fascinating . . . an important and disturbing contribution to the history of psychiatry." —New Statesman "Captivating. . . . No history of modern psychiatry is complete without this story." —Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon The Lobotomist explores one of the darkest chapters of American medicine: the desperate attempt to treat the hundreds of thousands of psychiatric patients in need of help during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Into this crisis stepped Walter Freeman, M.D., who saw a solution in lobotomy, a brain operation intended to reduce the severity of psychotic symptoms. Although many patients did not benefit from the thousands of lobotomies Freeman performed, others believed their lobotomies changed them for the better. Drawing on a rich collection of documents Freeman left behind and interviews with Freeman's family, Jack El-Hai takes a penetrating look into the life of this complex scientific genius and traces the physician's fascinating life and work.

Great biography providing insight into what drove Freemen. On one level I think he truly wanted to help others but primary driving force of his mass lobotomies was to fulfill his own needs. Intelligent man but he had some of his own issues bubbling just below the surface - ones he could hide from the public but not from those who truly knew him

This book is a shocking look at Walter Freeman's uninhibited war against unacceptable behavior in the early to mid 1900s. It's shocking to read about the perception of mental illness, what constituted illness, and how a husband could "control" a wife's mental illness (misbehaving or undesirable attitudes) by "curing" her with an ice pick to the brain. Which is exactly what happened to Rose Kennedy. This was also performed on children. A stunning read.

Jack El-Hai tells the fascinating story of Walter Freeman, a neurologist in the first half of the 20th century who performed the majority of the lobotomies in the U.S. El-Hai clearly wants to show us what drove Freeman to the perspective and approach that he used and he kind of succeeds in this endeavor. Yet the apologist point of view is very hard to take in many places. For example, el-Hai mentions almost in passing the many children that Freeman operated on. El-Hai does not go into this, doesn't give us the basic facts like the number of lobotomized children nor does he explain whether Freeman approached operating on children with any trepidation. Did he worry that the effects on children and adults would be different? In the end, I found Freeman's consistent approach of playing fast and loose with data truly stomach-turning. And the disappointing bit of el-Hai's rendering of the story is the superficial treatment of the story. There is no analysis of the data at important points along the way, no attempt to see how Freeman, a clearly intelligent man, could have run amok with such a potent weapon, even after it was clear that it did not work more often than not. I am now looking forward to reading the Valenstein book which appears to be a more reasoned, sober, and thoughtful account.

This is a marvelous, extremely well written, and very well researched account of the personality of a medical genius who sincerely thought he could cure almost everybody with psychiatric disease by performing lobotomies. The book gives an unbiased account of the personal, family, medical and academic life, the motivation and the personality of Walter Freeman, aka the lobotomist. It is a must read for everybody who has a mediatized negativisitic view of this medical doctor, whose intentions were to do good for patients and humanity, but are distracted by his showmanship. It explains where and why he went too far, but in historical context, and based on his individual personality characteristics. All too often, even neurologists, psychiatrists and neurosurgeons give a personal opinion of Walter Freeman, without ever having read his original papers and books and without putting them in their historical context. If one only wants to read one book on the person who made lobotomies (in)famous, this is definitely the one. It will change your view on one of the most villified doctors in the history of medicine. It certainly changed my opinion.

It is a good book..........But keep in mind it was written with the subject's family. So the dirt about what a cheating jerk he was to his wife...........Was not included in the book. Not that I read "kitty kelly" type of books. But he seemed like a jerk to me.He cheated on his wife and it did not seem to bother him when he killed a patient.

It's easy to look back now and consider lobotomy only with horror. But this book puts it squarely in its true context of failure after failure to treat severe mental illness in the early 20th century. The author has clearly done an exhaustive job of research and presents it in a very readable way, painting the subject in a complex and subtle light.

In this biography of a once infamous, but now little known doctor, Jack El-Hai has created an outstanding history of a complex and interesting man. We not only learn about the man, but also a great deal about he world and society that he lived and practiced in. The background and historical information that the reader is given is relevant, engaging, and adds a great deal to the story. As with any great biography, the reader feels as if they have really gotten to know Dr. Freeman, and have some understanding of his motivations, goals, and human faults. I honestly thought that Freeman would end up being some sort of mad scientist, who would be easy to despise. That just didn't happen. The man we meet is a brilliant, workaholic healer who is embarking on his career in the shadow of his Grandfather - quite literally a legend in the medical community. He had set the bar high, and Freeman put superhuman energy into trying to reach it. Yes, he had an ego and ambition, but no doctor would put forth the effort that he did unless he possessed a genuine concern and love for his patients. This is a great book because it fairly and honestly puts Freeman's career, and the highly controversial procedure he championed into historical and technological perspective. Because it is fair and factual, it is a vindication of sorts. He was human. He was trying to solve a very complex problem using the tools, knowledge, and technology that was available to him. In retrospect, what he did may seem horrible. At some point in time, to future generations, chemotherapy used in the treatment of cancer may very well seem the same way. History judges all great men, but superior biographies such as this help ensure that history's judgment is fair. It is difficult to conceive of a better quality biography about this man every being written.

I love the book, however when I received it, it was quite dirty

To someone like me who has no knowledge and want to learn SQL, this book is definitely not easy or dummies enough.

It's not that it's a "bad" book, but it isn't what I would expect from a "for Dummies" book. I was looking for something that would help me writing ad-hoc queries using SQL Developer for quick data analysis. Unfortunately, it's more a book for writing procedures, etc. While I don't dispute it's useful for that, b/c of the procedure focus, it doesn't have a lot of information specific to individual commands. I've been able to ferret out some information, but it's an effort to find what I'm looking for. Oh well. I'll probably stick to "trial & error" in most cases.

The book is excellent, way better than the myriad of SQL "For beginners" books out there, skip all of those as you can find that stuff by googling "SQL help." There are a number of Free SQL training sites as well, but when you need to do something more than a simple query, this is a great reference. Now be aware as with most "for dummies" books the first section of the book is informational but a waste of time for someone trying to get something done. When you do get to the meat of the book (I use mine a reference only) the segments are quick and easy. Very easy to find what you are looking for. I already had a database (for work) and didn't need to know how to build a database. But if you want to build a database, that first section may be helpful. Page 137 is where I started and gained a quick understanding of how to pull and manipulate data. Now I consider myself fairly well versed because of this reference book.

Great for beginners and a good reference

good for the price

Works as designed.

I help maintain a scientific cluster computing facilty which relies on a mysql database. Before joining this project I had almost no direct experiencewriting SQL, but had done 30 years of other kinds of programming. I found the book pitched at just the right level for me, and recommend it highly.

Great reference book for newbies to SQL.
