I'm a teacher, and I use these books to write animal reports with my 1st and 2nd grade students. Each animal has a two or four page spread with an average of 12 facts. The text is large so even my students can try reading the facts. After I read about one animal I ask my students what they remember about the animal. Then we decide what to write. I take suggestions from the students and we write two to six sentences about the animal. I keep the writing to just what we learned from the reading and not prior knowledge. I use paper that allows the students to draw a picture and write on lines below. I do a directed drawing to guide them. We select animals with a theme such as, the ocean, African, and forest animals. I usually pick five to six animals to write about per theme. We do a simple intro page where we list all the animals and where they live. We staple all the pages together with a cover page that I create with bubble letters such as, My Ocean Animal Report. Since the students helped come up with every sentence, they can read all the pages. They love the final results.
This is a fabulous book for young kids! The pages have many stunning and large photos of a good variety of animals. The book is broken up into sections like Desert, Forest, Ocean, etc. What is nice about these sections is that they don't all stick with the "typical" animals commonly classified with each time of habitat. An example is tigers being in the forest section. This shows children that there are other types of forests as opposed to just the American and Canadian types they may be familiar with.Each animal has a section about 2-4 pages long. These pages have very short and simple facts, and big, colorful images. It's short and sweet, but still captivating. There are also plenty of images of cute baby animals, which are always fun to look at!Another great thing about this book is that it actually has a Parent Tips section with small activities to do with kids based on the animals in the book, and each one works with a different skill. They're all very simple to do, and some are more fun than educational, but fun and education should go hand in hand with kids to keep them interested. There is also a map with names of the animals labelled in each country.Overall, this is an excellent beginner's book. It's not super detailed, but there are enough facts in there for a young child to retain, and with over 100 pages, that's a relief for parents who end up reading the whole thing to their kids in one sitting like I just did.
I bought this for my 3 year old, but my 5 year old likes it too! It includes a lot of common animals you would expect to find in a kids’ animal book (giraffes, lions, tigers, penguins, polar bears, etc) but also a few animals I didn’t expect (desert jerboa, garden spider, meerkats, thorny lizard, a few ocean animals). For many animals, pictures of both babies and adults are shown which my 3 yo loves. Most animals have 4 pages devoted to them but some only have a 2-page spread. Animals are grouped by habitat (desert animals, grassland animals, etc).My 3 yo doesn’t have the attention span to listen to me read all the text, but we name each animal and I read a few interesting facts for him. Kids ages 5-6 or older would probably listen to or read all the text if they were interested in animals.
We love the 'First Big Book' series of National Geographic. I have already purchased the remaining of the series and my kids (2 and 4 years old) love them a lot. This is the latest edition to the series and is no exception.Like the other books in this series, they are hard cover books containing over 100 pages. (This one is 128 pages) Although it looks like a preschooler book, it is written in a very professional way (similar topics are organized in 8 different chapters and it has a detailed introduction with information on how to use as well as an index at the end.) It rather looks like first big textbook of bugs. However, being organized in a scientific way does not make it complicated for kids since every information is given with either a photo or a schematic diagram to make it easier to understand. Each bug is allocated a few pages and on every page the ratio of pictures to text is 1:1 or greater. The interesting facts (sizes, number of eggs, behaviour etc.) about that particular bug is given on the first page with an informative picture that is accompanying. Then some more information follows with more pictures which could get the kid into the world of that bug.At the end of each chapter there is a game which is like matching the picture of larvae and the adult forms etc. What I like most about these books is that there is no minumum or maximum age for them. My 2 years old likes looking at the pictures and my 4 years old is kind of pictures plus games with a sip of information about the bugs, and I at 31 years old can find many things to learn about the bugs we see arround all the time.The only complaint is the binding quality which does not match the excellence of the paper and image quality. Other books had pages that got loose a few days after purchasing and this shows the signs of the same weakness already.For those who have not owned any books from this series, I can say this is a good book to start with since it is about the organisms we see in our daily life and younger kids would find it more interesting compared to the book about the space or other abstract things.
This was a birthday present for my (now 5-year-old) grandson. When it arrived and I looked though it I thought maybe it was a bit too much for him to take in, but other books on the subject were too babyish. When he opened this he lost interest in his other presents and wanted to look at every page! We had to remind him that he had other presents to open -- I also got him a bug study / collecting set. The book has really beautiful photos of many different insects and spiders, and is well organized. It also has just enough information to keep him interested for a couple of years, and I'm sure he will be trying to identify the bugs he finds in his yard. By next year his little brother will probably be old enough to be interested too and they'll have a great time hunting in the yard!

Very interesting background about the glass, its original manufacturing companies in several countries, and how these companies made the glass. There are great photos along with the historical info, and I learned a lot! Helped me as a beginning collector.
This book was mainly about European glass. Although a beautiful book and all, it did not have much about USA carnival glass which is what I was interested in.
Has more info about European carnival glass than US.

The author has woven her words together well to create a novel well worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed how the characters developed and I’m looking forward to the next installment. Rory and her new family definitely have some teething problems to sort out but I’m sure they will make enchanting tales for everyone to read. Go on! Grab a copy. You will not be disappointed.
Lots of curious adventures with a lot of fun people. It was a fast read with lots of twists. I look forward to further adventures in the new amazing library. It was riveting and kept my attention through the entire story .
It's a fantasy novel in a world I would like to live in. Spending life in a magical library sounds perfect ... I'd like to vacation in their town. The characters are very likable. The plotting is a bit imperfect, but the setting and characters make up for this. I also appreciate that it isn't too violent or sexual. My seven year old loves magic, and I'm not rereading it, this time out loud to her.
Entertaining book to read. Part of the story takes place in a sentient library that reminds me of Hogwarts. Fun read.
I liked that the author has created a new form of magic that I wished I could have. Magic with books ! How many readers won't want that type of magic. Great series can't wait to read the next in this series.
This is reminiscent of the Harry Potter series. There is just enough magic. And the storyline is held together well. I would recommend this to anyone. Can't wait to read the next book in the series
A good start to a new series. A bit haphazard in places as it seemed to 'frenzied' but this should settle down in future books. The characters need a bit more work as they still need to become 'real' at present they seem a bit two dimensional.She has worked in the bookshop since her father died. Trying to keep his legacy alive even though his partner wasn't helping much. When a group of strangers enter, she is concerned which proves apt when they try to set the shop on fire after demanding her father's journal (a journals he saved from the owner but couldn't read). Now fired she heads for her small apartment only to see the same men outside her building. Chased as she tries to run away she is rescued by women who claim to be her aunts and cousin. Vampires, witches, a magical library, familiars, murder and a grim reaper! How will she cope with her new life and people out to kill her?

I use this in conjunction with MODERN States clep course and it is great. It reinforces what you should be learning. It isn’t a study guide. Use modern States course as well. It’s a free course that prepares your for clep. Thank me later
This study guide is much more a reference book on what material will be covered by the respective CLEP tests, as well as being full of practice tests (one on each of the 33 topics). It does not however include the material itself that you need to study to pass said CLEP tests. I still highly recommend purchasing this book, but also partnering it with the website Modern States to actually educate yourself on the course material.
Just a practice test guide, literally the same questions as the 2016 and 2017 varieties, except chapters are shuffled. This will not help you learn, but is a great gauge if you're interested in multiple exams and want to see how much you rememeber.
This is good if you are taking multiple exams. It gives tests and an answer key, but does not explain why the answers are right. You will need other materials to be prepared for the exam. I am taking the macroeconomics test later this summer and am using Khan Academy as a free teaching guide and this as the practice exams.
This guide gives practice tests and answers for all of the available CLEP tests. It does not give any explanation as to why the answers are correct or how to learn the material to prepare for the test. My son and I used it for the Precalculus CLEP exam and found that the practice questions did not reflect the actual test questions. We both passed, but we got more insight on where to focus our studies from the verbal study hint paragraphs before the practice test than from the practice test questions. I recommend using free online resources like mathisfun dot com and even the ACT test prep books instead of this study guide for the Precalculus test. I'm planning to take the Information Systems, Statistics and Calculus tests, too. This study guide helps one to gauge the speed with which he/she can answer test questions and how the questions are worded, but I use other test prep resources, such as the Princeton Review AP exam books and free online websites like Khan Academy to prepare for the exams. It's probably worth buying if you are taking multiple exams, but I wouldn't buy it for one or fewer.
This book is great for preparing to take any CLEP exam. It gives an overview of the exams and provides a full practice test for each of the 33 exams they offer. It's a great guide to gauge where you are at and how much you need to work on. This is written by College Board who also writes the exams. Great for anyone considering taking a CLEP exam and only a fraction of the price here than at College Board's website!

This is so helpful. Even if you are taking just a few CLEP tests or a gazillion of them, this is great to have on your side. It will give you a synopsis of what the test is about, run you through a sample test or two, and provide the answers! The tests, of course, are not what they will actually test you on, but they prepare you well for the wording and the difficulty of the test.

Joel Stein grew up in Edison, N.J., and went to Stanford. From 1997-2017 he was a staff writer for Time magazine, writing a regular humor column and more than a dozen cover stories; he was also the back page columnist for Entertainment Weekly and the opinion section of The Los Angeles Times. He has contributed to Bloomberg Businessweek, GQ, Esquire, the New Yorker, Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, The New York Times Book Review, Elle, and Men's Health.Stein was a Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton and has appeared as a talking head on television shows such as Real Time with Bill Maher, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and VH1's I Love The '80s. He's interviewed celebrities for HBO, Cinemax, and Comedy Central. In addition to writing on staff for two television shows, he created an animated show for VH1 (Hey Joel) and wrote six network pilots. His 2012 book, Man Made: A Stupid Quest For Masculinity, was a bestseller, and Fox hired him to adapt it as a film script. I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.
With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.†I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,†and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.
THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.
Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.
