I wasn't thrilled when my Catholic women's book club chose this for our December selection. After reading the reviews here I was afraid the book would be polarizing. It wasn't, the book stimulated a wonderful lively discussion. I am glad we read it and recommend it.Berg tells us up front that this is her imagining of the events that took place in what we know as the Christmas story. She acknowledges she has taken license with the "varying and contradictory facts". The reader isn't required to accept Berg's imagining as the reader's own. But Berg's book will stimulate the reader's own imagining of the story. Berg's telling made me think and for that I am glad.I enjoyed Berg's rich vision of Mary and Joseph as they may have lived in Palestine 2000 years ago. It made me think about the foods they ate, the house they lived in, the work they did, the life lived by two human beings who lived and walked the earth. It made me think anew about what the birth of Jesus would have been like for these two people, their families and friends. And finally Berg's telling made me think about what I believe and why I believe what I believe.
In standing with Elizabeth Berg being my favorite writer, she stood up to my expectations on this book. I got it for Christmas in 2006 and waited until 2007 to read it, but I thought it started out slow, so I put it aside. Now a few years later, I have converted my religion, but still decided to give the book a shot. It didn't even speak to me as a religious book, because it's not really. It's only the authors take on what she thinks happened -- all the day to day things that you don't get to see in the story of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. I just loved it. I read it as an awesome story with a great plot, and was not at all put off by the story that it was representing. This book is a quick read (as are most of Elizabeth Berg's books because you just can't put them down), and I just loved it. There were so many ways she could have gone into more detail and made the book longer, but I think the way it is is just fine.
This delightful, short book, which is perfect for Advent reading, tells the story of Mary and Joseph in a way you've never before read. Author Elizabeth Berg uses the Gospels as the foundation of the story, but then she fleshes it out in novel form to make these ancient biblical characters come to life as real people. She shows their humanity, exploring the myriad of feelings and emotions Mary and Joseph must have felt with the miracle birth of Jesus. A lovely story.
Elizabeth Berg's The Handmaid and the Carpenter: A Novel is a richly detailed saga of an historic time and a Biblical couple; it is a tale that she has imbued with her special skill of immediacy and an everyday voice, and as a result, we can visualize this young couple as they struggle with the effects of a miraculous conception on their relationship and their lives.We follow them in their journey to Bethlehem and the events that unfold there, just as we come to see the other small and large miracles that accompany them throughout their lives together. And we watch as Joseph's doubts rise up again, and how, finally, he comes to believe.This brief and powerful account is memorable and evocative, and one which adds another dimension to Berg's body of work.Five stars!
I enjoyed this story. The love story between Mary and Joseph was was beautifully depicted and I love the way they were presented as human beings and not perfect. My only two problems with this book were tha it was too short and there was no character development. Mary and Joseph were chosen for the faith they displayed. Mary was discontented throughout most of the book and Joseph never beleived Mary at all. That was a little dissapointing but I think the author was just trying to depict the very human doubts and fears they must have had. Just don't read the story expecting some great revelation on the part of the characters
I knew how it would come out and still cried like I was reading a love story. Details like the incident with the Roman soldier at the river brought the "big question" into focus. Was the conception immaculate or a figment of a victims imagination? And, does it matter in the face of love and faith?
Elizabeth Berg is one of my favorite authors. She really knows how to bring the characters in all of her books alive. The same is true here. Realizing that this is FICTION, helped me to overlook some of the behaviors displayed (sexual undertones). I loved the fun loving personality of both Mary and Joseph in their youth. This story stayed with me for a long time after I finished the book. I would not call this a "novel." It was more of a short story. Personally, I loved it!
I would not recommend this historical novel. Very uninspiring.

Used this when teaching a lesson to a kindergarten class about solid and flat shapes, worked great!!! Loved it!
My 4 year old loves this book. He asks me to read and reread this story. I personally think it is silly, but I am reading it for him not me.
My wife loves the books and as a kindergarten teacher she will use them often in her class.
Good book
I used this as part of my 3d shapes lesson during an observation. The boys in my LOVED this and it's comic book like style. It was a great reinforcement to our introduction on shapes.
My students loved this story! If you read it in your best astronaut voice, it's a great intro for a 3D shape unit!
The comic book format was a real hit with my kinders. They also got to review 2-D & 3-D shapes as I read this. The pictures are bright & colorful. Great read-aloud or book that the kids can do along with you using manipulatives.

About the Author
Born in Peterborough, UK, Kerry Fisher studied French and Italian at Bath University, followed by several years working as an English teacher in Corsica and Spain before topping the dizzying heights of holiday rep and grape picker in Tuscany. I am a snotty English major with a few advanced degrees, hooked on science fiction and the headier type of literature. I needed an audible book for the car and grabbed this one because it was the first on the list. I could have driven across country without stopping. Fantastic characterization, intriguing plot, really a perfect summer read and the audible narrator is delightful. I have already purchased another book by Kerry Fisher for my next long car journey.
I had yet to find a book I enjoyed as much as " Girl on a train" until now. I can"t put it down and will be sorry when it ends.
This book was really well written and enjoyable. It did mention in the reviews that she was similar to Liane Moriarty, who I'm a big fan of. Unfortunately, I came across this book while I was browsing thrillers. This book is categorized as a thriller, but it is not a thriller. At all. It's a wonderful story about family that is very emotionally charged, but it's not in any way a thriller. Anyone specifically looking for a thriller will be disappointed by this book.
The Silent Wife is the story of two women who at the beginning are only connected by the men they have married. In time, they become friends and later on each other's support system.The book begins with Maggie getting married to Nico Farinelli. She knows his mother Anna disapproves of her but she has fallen in love with him. After so many broken relationships, she has finally found a man she can count on and who thinks of her son Sam as family. Nico also has a daughter from his first marriage, Francesca. Maggie hopes to become a friend to her.Lara is married to Massimo, Nico's brother and they have one child, Sandro. Lara's also the second wife. Massimo divorced Dawn when she refused to have children. Lara couldn't believe when Massimo started courting her and soon he makes her forget all her reservations but after the wedding everything changes.There were so many things I like about the story. Lara and Maggie were both strong in their own way. They both had to deal with Nico and Massimo's mother Anna. She was not an easy person to like. She was always looking for ways to offend the "new wives". As the matriarch of the family, she made sure both sons lived in the same street as her. She even has a key to enter their homes uninvited.Not only did Maggie have to deal with Anna but with her teenage step-daughter, Francesca who was trying very hard to make Maggie feel like an outsider. Lara's life was not any easier. Hers was a hotter hell.These women were both so different but life brought them together. They both were dealing with secrets that could affect their whole family's dynamic. I rooted for both of them to make it.The Silent Wife is a very entertaining tale full of emotion, heartache, complicated relationships, love and friendship. I would recommend it without reservation.Cliffhanger: No4/5 Fangs
This book was completely out of the range I normally read but it was wonderful. A family always has problems and usually we all have our secrets. Yet being a step parent you always walk a fine line yet give to where at times you wonder if it is worth it. When I was not reading this book, I was thinking about it! I put myself in all their places and I just HAD to get back to reading to see what was going to happen. Kerry Fisher did a beautiful job on making you feel as if you were part of this extended family and now I'm sad I am finished .
The topic of abuse that is feared and hidden behind the walls of a home is not a pleasant, "feel-good" topic, but I am pleased to know that this difficult topic is making its way into novels. The two women who have married brothers seem unlikely to form a bond or friendship. However, as more and more secrets are revealed, they begin to help one another manage life, though their challenges are very different. Thank you for writing about a topic that needs to see more light of day, with an occasional phrase or sentence that made me smile.
I think it was a great summer read. Not what I usually pick, but I was delighted with it. It dragged a little at the beginning but then as the drama increased, I looked forward to my reading time more and more. I could definately see myself in one of the characters, and could imagine the turmoil of all the family feelings. I liked the way she wrote it from both the 2 womans prospective. I think its well worth your time and enjoyment.
The language is a bit difficult. Lots of British slang and nuances made it difficult to follow. And the promised twist was nothing as promised. There was no twist at all. Predictable, all the way to the end. I was disappointed and a bit mad at the time and money wasted. It was a big promise to make, and the only one that led me to buy this book. I don’t feel as if there’s anything I could honestly recommend to anyone considering this as a purchase. All I can say is “don’t botherâ€.

Professionally speaking, I’m no realtor nor do I do anything Real Estate related for work; so, I didn’t exactly have a specific reason for buying this book. However, the simple fact that I love the Big Apple and appreciate the fact that New York has some of the most amazing structures I’ve ever seen – provoked curiosity. I happened to come across this book and curiosity got the best of me. A book that will specifically prepare you to take the exam to get a real estate license? In New York City? Absolutely had to have it. I had no idea how New York real estate was in a class of its own. Binders replace what every other state call a real estate contract and attorneys are required to sign off on all of these before finalization. However, in most other states, attorneys are not required? I think after I take the exam, I just might investigate getting my license in other states too. This book is amazing for preparing for it. I’m completely hoping that I can find books exactly like this one for other places in this country.
I just took and passed the exam in New Jersey and want to renew my license in New York. Most of what you need to know, is interchangeable across states except when you get into state-specific license laws etc. That's why I say, this book would be most useful as a "real estate dictionary".They have not added NY state license law in this book. For instance, my NJ book has state information throughout, including a chapter with the State License Law in its entirety. This book is very generic and looks like it was written for ANY state exam, with "New York" added in a few select, inconsequential, places. As for the seller, I recommend buyers try to avoid "third-party" sellers.
I've been preparing to take the NY real estate exam for a while. I wanted to get some extra help and more info before I took it. A friend recommended this book to me and I'm glad he did. After reading it it was easy to pass the exam. This book is a must have
This was a great resource - exactly what I was looking for in prepping for the exam! All the quiz and exam review questions were really useful, but to me the best parts were the real estate math review and all the calculation practice questions. That was always the hardest for me so I'm glad there were a lot of chances to practice. Plus they offer you a full refund if you don't pass the exam, so how can you go wrong?
This book is the best! The information is well organized, and easy to understand. I love how there are practice tests throughout. Definitely buy this book if you want to get your NY real estate license!
Don't waste your money, non-user friendly book, doesn't bring real life examples, it is not engaging, I regret buying so much.I have tried to use it as a study guide but it was completely waste of time, there are many other grear books out there.
This book is a lifesaver! It is incredibly comprehensive and truly preps you for the test. It includes quiz questions that are similar to the real test. I couldn't recommend it more!
Somewhat useful but full of typos and grammatical errors! Also found some incorrect answers to test questions which I found very confusing! Needless to say, extremely dissatisfied with this purchase...

4.5 stars — OK, first thing you should know about me is that I’m a scared crier…meaning tears fall out of my eyes uncontrollably (b/c it’s not normal crying) when I get scared. And this book is NOT scary people. I mean, there are suspenseful bits, sure. But apparently just the concept of ghosts scares the crap out of me. I started this book at 1am while my husband is away on business, and you better believe I freaked myself out. I don’t know why I said first thing, that was more just an aside because it amused me.This book really did suck me in despite scaring me…and I think I was scared because the atmosphere surrounding the school and Johnny was described so well. The way the story was laid out was really interesting as well — there were 2 or 3 glimpses into the past near the beginning to help us understand what happened, but mostly it was set in the present. And we also got quite a few POVs. Now, that’s not always my favourite, but in this case the bits we saw from other people felt right for the plot. However, there were a few times with just Maggie and Johnny where I felt like the POV changed without a clear break (like sometimes maybe even in a paragraph) and that’s a pet peeve of mine. It’s not incorrect at all, I believe this is a case of 3rd person omniscient…but I guess I’m just not as big a fan of that, and it’s not what I’m used to reading so it feels wrong to me even when it isn’t.I loved Maggie, even as she frustrated me. She was so vulnerable and desperate for love that would stay, my heart broke for how hard she worked to not be a bother to Aunt Irene. I totally understood her connection with Johnny, and truly felt their chemistry…I didn’t doubt the love she developed, but I was just as concerned about her lack of awareness of the untenable situation that was their relationship. At times it felt like she did become obsessed. I understood why, I just wanted more for her, you know? I appreciated the little detail about her having dyslexia, and how becoming a foster kid kind of let that fall through the cracks so that no one noticed or helped.Johnny totally got to me too…honestly, I wouldn’t have minded being in his head even more. He was such an interesting character because he was this popular kid when he was alive, but then he had 50+ years of loneliness to shape him into someone…more I guess. I felt for him and what that kind of isolation must have done to him. I understood his connection with Maggie, and I appreciated that he tried to do the right thing, but found that hard to maintain.I adored Gus and Aunt Irene…they were a wonderful pseudo-family for Maggie, and I loved that Maggie automatically had someone who believed her in Gus. Shad was a mixed bag for me…he was written so perfectly, this lonely, awkward, 14 year old boy just trying to survive high school. I would get annoyed with his crush on Maggie, but it was so perfectly realistic for a kid his age. He was hilarious and annoying and my heart ached for what he was going through.I’m super interested to see what happens next. I wouldn’t call that a cliffhanger ending, but I was also glad I could just buy the next book and get answers right away. There were so many little tidbits of plot that felt like hints, and I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds.
I've put this book off for so long. I figured it's Halloween. Why not pick up a ghost story? My biggest fear with paranormal romance is that it would either be incredibly unbelievable or incredibly cheesy. Rest assured and true to Amy's nature, this is neither.Maggie uncovers her school's tragic history and Johnny Kilcross. Their friendship builds so slowly and beautifully and eventually leads to such a sweet, old-fashioned love.I have fallen in love with these characters and all the old-fashioned charm that is in this book. Amy takes us back to a time when gentleman still courted their girls and would steal a chaste kiss.Amy sets us right up for Prom Night in Purgatory. I can only anticipate part two being just as beautifully written.
3.5 Stars... A story about getting a second chance at love with a supernatural twist... Overall I enjoyed this ghostly tale with the throw back to the 50's; it was a sweet and romantic read with likable characters and an interesting storyline... I think my struggle simply came that it didn't hold the depth that I am accustomed to with an Amy Harmon book... The simplicity of the read was disappointing; I wanted the characters to have more complexity and the love to be a deeper struggle with more conflict... It seemed like the main characters went from wariness to a bone deep love instantly; I wanted to watch that progression and feel their emotional journey as they found their connection to one another... There were some twists and turns along the way and the story alludes to a mystery to be revealed which piques my interests, so I will certainly read the second book and see how it all unfolds:)

The characters in this book are great. There is such depth to Maggie and Shad along with Gus and aunt Irene. I'm really loving everything I read by Amy Harmon. The story flows nicely and keeps you wondering how things could ever work for these beautiful people but doesn't make any ending seem impossible. I feel like I know what the school actually looks like and have walked the halls myself. Like I've known a girl like Mags and can see her clearly. I'm ready to move along to Book 2 and see where this story goes and thankful that I don't have to wait. ♡
After having read all of Amy Harmon's books, I knew that rather sooner than later, I'd be reading this one and the sequel as well. Now that I finished them, I want to slap myself a dozen times over as why I didn't read these already ages ago!Beautiful, heartwarming story with very lovable characters. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Captivating and gripping story. I barely read any paranormal books but I know that if they were all written in the way Amy Harmon writes them, I'd read them all.All of the characters touched my heart, each in their own way. I must confess I was a bit confused with their names in the beginning but the further I got in the story, it became more clear as of who was who and when/where they were.If you're a fan of Amy Harmon's writing, and you haven't read this (and the sequel) yet, don't wait any longer! Get on it, asap!

Not all guide books can be all things to all people. This slim (184 pages), well thought out volume, concentrates on being really useful without weighing the traveler down. The cover promises "22 Smart Ways to See the Region" and it delivers most of the 22.If this is your first trip to the Yucatan and you are an archaeology/history/sociology buff you need to read up on the Maya before you travel. A good place to start is The Ancient Maya, 6th Edition and/or The Maya (Eighth Edition) (Ancient Peoples and Places).Some guide books have fairly decent but short descriptions of Mayan culture and sites that at least provide better information than what you are going to get from your average tour guide at the site. Unlike the thick, standard guide, this particular guide by Frommer provides only outlines and brief descriptions because that is what it sets out to do. It tells you what's important and how to get there and what to do along the way.The Yucatan is not just archaeology sites. It has amazing beaches and reefs and underground lake-filled caves, jungles and ecotourism sites. There is something to interest almost everybody. I was traveling with a fairly diverse and opinionated small group who had all visited the Yucatan before. One liked beaches, another scuba, another eco-sites. We all used this guide and were easily able to strategize what we were going to do each day without getting bogged down in confusing details and we never got lost. The Yucatan is broken down into three day, one and two week car tours to pick and choose from. All sensible and manageable and worthwhile.This guide has excellent maps. Additionally, there is a fold out map on the front cover and a removable larger map in a plastic pocket at the back.Nothing appears to be left out. There are chapters on ecotourism, underwater and extreme sports, traveling with families, golf, spas, pre-Colombian sites and culture, regional touring, cities and towns and where to stay and dine in each area. The dining suggestions were good to excellent. Nothing too touristy nor too dangerously "native" either.My favorite part of this guide is that it starts with "16 Favorite Moments", a list of the the author's favorite things to do. Yes, I can enthusiastically say that "#1 Standing above the azure sea at the ruins of Tulum" is one of my favorite moments as well. While I didn't accomplish all 16, I found what I did experience on the list almost entirely worthwhile. The last suggestion, #16, to eat at Oscar y Lalo's at Playa Soliman was an excellent dining suggestion even though the restaurant had moved to a less awe inspiring spot evidently after the guide had gone to press. This explains the four instead of five star rating.
Save your money. This is a digest of Cancun and the Yucatan and poor one at that. For only a dollar more you can get "Frommer's Cancun and the Yucatan 2011" which is a vastly superior guide. I took four guides for my time in Cancun and the Yucatan and hands down this is the worst of the group. Though it has pretty photos and informative maps it is deficient in its accommodation & restaurant recommendations. It has scant information about the history, culture or what to see in the area. Best advise: Upgrade to a full guide.
