- First: Don't buy at full price. Some Amazon marketplace sellers are selling this as low as $9. I was expecting disappointment based on the low-balled price, but I was wrong!- Second: Don't confuse this with TSR AD&D 1st Ed Unearthed Arcana or Sword & Sorcery Arcana Unearthed. Both cool books.- Third: Don't read the Amazon description. It makes you think this book is all about strongholds for some reason...- A minor annoyance is that WOTC already have a DMG2 released and a Player's Handbook 2 planned, and the material herein would be better placed/organized into a larger 500+ page Player's Handbook and larger 500+ page DMG respectively or just merge all these things entirely. Monte Cook did it with a huge Arcana Evolved. Why can't WOTC do this? Why all the individual books (this one is barely 200+ pages)? It's stupid to flip through 100 different books to see all the different classes and races available, make 1 race book, 1 class book and so on...Everyone else is doing it (Moongoose, Green Ronin) but WOTC. I think Hasbro has enough money.- Its variants, house rules, and draws from a variety of sources and influences old and new as others have suggested. You have race variants (desert elf, aquatic gnome, etc. not terribly exciting), class variants (new paladins, etc., cool), Gestalt classes vs. multi-classes (nice), many "Bloodline" race-types (a succubus mates with a human creating a human with some demon bonuses - very interesting), Character traits and flaws, item familiars (very cool), insanity (which goes back to the original AD&D DMG 1st Ed), Rep and Honor (goes back to original AD&D Oriental Adventures 1st ED), Spell points instead of Spell memorization (fire and forget method) (many people use this spell pt house rule), the racial Paragon (sort of like a Prestige Race). On and on. Very neat stuff...Criticism that this book has contradictory rules or not-well-thought-out cohesiveness is missing the point. I like this book more than the regular DMG or PHB.
Ok, its time to start a new campaign and I've played everything there is to play (aside from the myriad of prestige classes that don't interest me). What am I going to play you ask yourself for hours. If you have ever had this problem, like me, probably because you've been playing D&D for far too long, this book is your savior, plain and simple.Back in second edition there was a game called Player's Option, if you recall, and it gave you a good deal of freedom to customize your character. This book goes well beyond that. Its actually quite interesting. There are little tweaks for all sorts of races due to climate or elementally based races. Follow this up with a lot of variants for classes which are basically swapping a few things in and out in most cases, sometimes losing a trait from one class and gaining another, while some are new. In my opinion, this adds a lot more depth to the game because if you do want to play one of the 10,000 prestige classes, it gives you more than one avenue to get to them. If you do not like prestige classes, then this gives you more options than the dozen or so base classes that currently exist. I would particularly recommend this if you're fond of playing Specialist Wizards (in which case this is a MUST), Barbarians, Monks, or have ever wanted to see a quality representation of an "Anti-paladin." This may be the section of the book you most commonly use, and that would be mostly at character creation. There are some feats, which are so-so on the usefulness scale but are just so very interesting and characterful. Then, traits to make your character more attuned to how you envision his personality, and flaws to give him special vulnerabilities (and of course there is a benefit to them as well). Its an interesting section to say the least but after that you get into some very wild and, indeed, very fun options, including a variant on weapon proficiency based on weapon groups, variants on armor systems, D&D without levels, and even D&D without hit-points. All I can say is, despite how crazy that sounds, someone obviously put a good deal of thought into it since it is at least mostly viable.Basically, if you're bored with D&D sometimes, this book is curry powder. It would DEFINITELY spice things up again.
this book is easily my favorite 3.5 book to own. it keeps the game fresh and offers modifications to some of less popular rules, or rules that some may think werent completely developed properly. adds in the addition of character flaws with the reward of more feats, get rid of spell slots for a more mana/MP type of casting, even class variants like fighters with sneak attack instead of bonus feats. the book keeps games fresh when you run out of official content to use and dont like most of the homebrew content. i would recommend this to ALL 3.5 players, even new players that havent explored all the regular official content
Good reading for those considering tinkering with the D&D 3.5 system. It presents some very interesting alternatives to give your game a different feel. The good news is that they are fairly thought out. Many of the "house" rules are extensively tested and they include information on the second and third order effects for the proposed changes. Generally, it convinced me to just leave the existing system alone for my games, but it's always there.I wouldn't buy if you're a player, much more of a DM resource. However, if you have a very flexible DM that likes external ideas, it might be worth a look.
A rules variants book. If you want to try changing rules to suit your need, it's a good book. I found very limited use for this book, though.

I'm kinda offended that the book doesn't include the Mosrite guitar--especially The Ventures Model Mosrite. From the '60s to this day, The Ventures remain popular. These guitars now sell for $4000-$6000 on eBay and retail. THE PREMISE of this book is stated in the amazon description: "In this spectacular full-color deluxe volume, Guitar Aficionado magazine--today's preeminent luxury guitar publication--presents THE WORLD'S MOST EPIC GUITARS, the stories behind them, and the people who own them." (And note that it is presented by "Guitar Aficionado Magazine", notably NOT entitled "Famous Guitar Owners Magazine".).UPDATE: The title of the book is "The Most Famous, Rare, and Valuable Guitars in the World". To not include a guitar that is revered, considered a collector's item, and sells for $4000-$5000 is a serious failure of this book and so it deserves ONE STAR. Instead, it is really a book about FAMOUS people and their guitars, NOT "The Most Famous, Rare, and Valuable Guitars in the World". HENCE ONE-STAR...I cannot claim to be familiar with ALL "The Most Famous, Rare, and Valuable Guitars in the World", so knowing that one of "The Most Famous, Rare, and Valuable Guitars in the World" (Mosrite/ Venture's Model) is NOT included, I wonder WHAT ELSE is not included. HENCE, ONE STAR.
if you are truly a person that loves guitars and the music that comes from them . you need to have this book. I thought as fan of guitar I might place this book on the coffee table to have too look at ever now and than. Once i open the book couldn't take my hands off for 4 days . Just keep going thru the collection that these people had and just couldn't but it down.
Good coffee table addition.Just what it professes to be...good for casual collectors, less so if you want a very detailed, specific book about guitars. I liked the format as well as the pictures. Not for the hard core...mostly entertainmentRick Wise. San Diego
This book is beautiful! Well written with stunning photographs of some of the iconic guitars of our time. I bought it as a Christmaspresent for my nephew who is learning to play and is constantly looking at guitars on his computer... I can't wait to see his facewhen he gets it. Not to nitpick but what is up with the section on James Hetfield? There are two pages of text devoted to hislove of custom automobiles and barely any mention of the guitars on display in the book. I for one would have loved to hearthe story behind the guitars. Other than that, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the six-string!
This book has beautiful photographs and good narrative discussing each guitar. It is of high quality, well put together and has gold leaf on the page edges which adds to it's nice design. I bought this for my husband and he loves it. This book is great for any guitar lover and would look great on a coffee table.
Nice in-depth look into some great guitars.Very well written with great photography. The "caretakers" of these instruments were very kind to open up for these interviews and photo sessions,
Bought for a client for holiday gift. He loved it. Professional man who loves music and plays in clubs. When it arrived, the cover was marked with black marks. I was able to get them off with some cleaner but it was annoying to receive a dirty item.
It is very well produced. It's not five star because some of the guitar collections, in the beginning of the book, have been featured in the magazine already. Feel this is a bit of a 'cheat' since the recipient has already read mags cover to cover and keeps them all. Other than that, certainly worth the price.
Super collectible coffee table book. I was fortunate to purchase this book before the price took off. Great photography coupled with the stories behind some very notable guitars and guitar collections. A must read for any guitarist.

I've lived in DC for 11 years and was really hoping for a fun coffee-table book showing LIFE then and now. Instead, this book focuses on the big buildings, which pretty much all look exactly the same. "Look! It's the National Archives in 1926! And in 2000!" The difference? Color. And so on, page after page, same big impersonal building on the left (in black and white), exact same building on the right (in color). If anything, it's a testament to the consistency of stone and marble. To be fair, there are a handful of interesting (if standard) images: the swamps around the Lincoln Memorial, the early Capitol building, the White House with sheep, the old stone house at 17th & Constitution. But really, I've seen these before and they certainly aren't enough to justify the book.At least it's a nice looking, well printed book. I'll leave it on the coffee-table for now. I just won't open it much.
Mitchell's book is the fifth in the "Then and Now" series that I've bought, and it is every bit as good as the others. If you are not familiar with the concept, old photographs of particular street corners or buildings are contrasted with corresponding current images. The author displays his detailed knowledge of the area as he recounts stories that accompany each set of photos.Due to the consistency of some of the buildings in Washington, D. C., the main difference between pictures of a certain structure from 100+ years ago and today is only that one is black and white while the newer one is in color. But some locations have been dramatically transformed over time.Any student of history and especially people interested in Washington, D. C. should really enjoy this book.
In a nutshell, if you like pictures, especially old ones, then you will enjoy this photo book. I love the old pictures of Washington D.C., New York and Philadelphia and just enjoy seeing what looked like a better time. This is one of the three I ordered about old Washington D.C. photos and they all follow the what I've stated above.
My son loves this book. He's going to DC in October and learned so much...
I am a 6th generation native Washingtonian and always enjoy reading about my city. It is nice to pull this off the shelf and share the good old days with grandchildren and other guests.
Very interesting.
on time and as advertised
I bought this book as a gift for my 14 year old nephew who will be visiting DC next spring. The pictures from then and now looked really interesting when I thumbed through the book. I think he will enjoy having the book for his trip.

Amazon.com Review
History will probably remember Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Democrat of New York, as one of the great American senators and rank his name alongside Stephen Douglas and Daniel Webster. He isn't known as a topnotch legislator--his name is attached to no ground-shaking bill--but he is respected by colleagues in both parties and by the media as one of the brightest men to work in Washington in recent years. He's also had a fascinating political journey, which took him from liberalism in the 1950s to flirtations with neoconservatism in the '60s and '70s to old-style Democratic loyalties in the '80s and '90s. "In contact with both liberalism and conservatism, he belongs to neither," writes Moynihan biographer Godfrey Hodgson, an English journalist who previously penned a history of American conservatism, The World Turned Right Side Up. "Supported by both, he seems to link them, and to transcend them." Hodgson covers Moynihan's whole life--from growing up (it wasn't in Hell's Kitchen, by the way) to his time in the navy, his controversial role in the Johnson administration (where he wrote the so-called Moynihan Report on the black family), his Nixon-Ford days as ambassador to India and the United Nations, and finally his career as an elected pol. He moved about constantly, writes Hodgson: "It is a record that suggests impatience, dissatisfaction, persistent difficulty in getting on with superiors, and the troubled emotions that afflict a man of immense ability and energy who cannot quite find the right task and is afraid that his time will run out before he does." Following four full terms in the Senate, he has finally found "increasing serenity." (Moynihan announced he would not seek reelection in 2000, which opened the door for Hillary Clinton's candidacy.) Hodgson himself has known Moynihan for several decades; the senator even attended the author's wedding in 1970. This relationship allows the biographer to include firsthand reflections at appropriate moments ("When Pat announced that he was going to work for Nixon in the White House, I almost fell off my chair"). An interesting, favorable, and admiring book, The Gentleman from New York serves as a fitting tribute to the man. Of Moynihan's legacy, Hodgson writes: "After the dazzling speeches and elegant essays, the wit and the prophetic utterances are largely forgotten, he will be remembered as the man who ... had the lucidity and courage to restate the enduring propositions of the American political creed ... [and] above all a faith in the redemptive power of republican government." --John J. Miller

Though it may not rank as the definitive Moynihan biography, this informative study brings clarity to the Democratic senator's 24-year career as a legislator and his even longer career as a political thinker. Moynihan has called his career a series of "chance encounters, random walks"; Hodgson (The World Turned Right Side Up), an Oxford-based historian and a friend of Moynihan's since 1962, manages to lend that random walk a narrative coherence. Giving a colorful if not always balanced account of the senator's extraordinary journey from the sidewalks of New York to the chairmanship of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, Hodgson, who had access to the senator's political papers and personal letters, peppers his account liberally with charming anecdotes and vivid biographical details. He portrays, for example, a young Pat, back in New York City after three formative years at the London School of Economics, devouring cheese and onion sandwiches between beers at McSorley's Ale House. He also gives a nicely detailed account of Moynihan's momentous 1975 speech as delegate to the U.N., where he denounced anti-Semitism amid a furious debate over a resolution declaring Zionism a form of racism. And he follows the legislator as he went on to become, in the words of the New York Times, an "aggressive debater, outrageous flatterer, shrewd adviserAindeed manipulatorAof Presidents, accomplished diplomat and heartfelt friend of the poor." Hodgson's summary of the senator's legislative record is uncritical, and his prose gets cumbersome in places. But as an eyewitness account of Moynihan's colorful career, this biography is a welcome achievement. (Aug.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Prett well done biography but and admiring intimate.Hodgson is an excellent scholar but his admitted fandom of this compleiing figure is the books srenth and weakness.Moynihan who was embraced at various time by both right and left, came from a prgressive New Deal background worked for NY Gov. Averill Harriman then later for the Kennedy and Johnson adminastrations,he came to nationalm prominece at Harvard after writting the famous (or infamous depending on your take),"The Negro Family: A Case For National Action" otherwise known as the "Moynihan Report".He was invited by Richard Nixon to join his admintration were he had some influence.Stints fllowed as Ambassador to the U.N. and India before hs tenure as Senator of New York.Though he penned very little legislation he was a major influence in the Senate. His ability the seek answers across a wide political spectrum while still insisting on a progressive/liberal identity makes him dfine the term "Neo-Liberal".Hodgson personal closeness may have led to too little skepticism or critical approach but ackowleges this in his introduction. What this closeness lends to the biography out weighs it weaknesses.CKatz
Godfrey Hodgson, the author of this new biography of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, is admittedly a long-standing, close friend of his subject. This is at once the major strength and major weakness of this portrait of the senior Senator from New York. On the one hand, Hodgson has enjoyed unprecedented access to Moynihan in writing this book, which stops just short of being an official biography, making the book extremely revealing. Yet as an intimate of Moynihan's, the author cannot seem to achieve the distance and perspective which objectivity demands.Nonetheless, anyone interested in American or New York politics--or contemporary American history--is bound to find this an absorbing volume. After all, Moynihan's friends and associates have ranged from Averell Harriman to Henry Kissinger, from Arthur Goldberg to Richard Nixon, from Lyndon Johnson to Irving Kristol. He has exercised power in locales as varied as Albany, the U.S. Labor Department, the Nixon White House, the United Nations, New Delhi, and the U.S. Senate. Perhaps more than most political biographies, this is not just the story of one man but a political and intellectual history of the period in which his career flourished.Yet the author's biases are apparent. He strives mightily to reconcile and explain Moynihan's political inconsistencies, styling him at one point an "orthodox centrist liberal"--whatever that means. (It strikes me as an oxymoron.) He tries to find consistent strains in what seems to me to have been a political career characterized most of all by opportunism, if not outright caprice. He tries to explain away Moynihan's alcohol problem, while reporting that his staff employs the euphemism that the Senator is "with the Mexican ambassador" to explain that he is enjoying Tio Pepe, his favorite dry sherry. He justifies the Senator's long-standing feud with the liberal wing of his party in light of some early slights at the hands of liberal New Yorkers, referring at one point to "the authoritarian left," an interesting turn of phrase in the wake of Gingrich and Co.There are a number of obvious errors in the book. The author notes that in 1953, the Democrats had been out of power in New York State for 20 years, ignoring the fact that Democrat Herbert Lehman served as Governor through 1943, following FDR and Al Smith. He refers to the Comptroller General of the U.S. as a "Treasury official," although the C.G. is in charge of the U.S. General Accounting Office, a Congressional agency, not part of the Treasury Department. He suggests that President Clinton pledged that he would "vote for" the welfare reform legislation he eventually signed, missing the fact that America is not a parliamentary democracy.Despite the weaknesses, this is a beguiling biography, which is for the most part well written, and sure to captivate anyone with more than a passing interest in U.S. politics. I do not regret for a minute the time I spent reading it.
Good read.
as advertised
I found this to be a fascinating biography, which a good author can accomplish regardless of what one thinks about the subject.Unlike another reviewer, I do not think that History will remember Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the same thoughts as the great American senators, alongside L.B.J. or Daniel Webster. As noted, Moynihan is not known as one of the Senate's great legislators. Critics regularly pointed to the fact that he was never (at least, in a leadership role) associated with any sweeping legislation, and his lofty presence made accommodation and the give and take of the Senate was difficult for him. This is a wonderful biography, which (except for the occasional errors pointed out by other reviewers) remains well written and an engrossing story. Biographer Godfrey Hodgson is admittedly a long-observing and apparently close friend of his subject. Some assert that this the major strength and major of this work while others assert that this is the major weakness of the biography. However, I remain unconvinced that for such an intimate portrait, complete (or even relative) objectivity is impossible to attain. It is hard to imagine a subject letting someone get close enough to do a thorough job who is not a friend. And as we too often see, without the at least tacit blessing of the subject, many people who can offer good insights will not cooperate.Moynihan was seldom predictable from an ideological perspective. Who else could work for both Kennedy and Nixon, and end up vilified by both liberals and conservatives? Yet, he was consistently respected by Senate colleagues in both parties. Few seriously question the fact that he had a massive intellect. This makes even more interesting the fact that Moynihan so assiduously sought verification and validation of positions which he had taken years before (evidenced by the satisfaction he took as seeing the NAACP - endorsed writings with regard to his decades-earlier call to alarm with regard to the state of the Black family). While many on the left decried some of his positions (the author seems to infer that the occasional, but continued reference to his comment re "benign neglect" was more painful that the stenosis which afflicted his spine), he remained a champion of those whom society left behind. All of those who are interested in American or New York politics will enjoy this read. However, I do not find it to be (nor do I think it tries to be) as much an in-depth tome on contemporary American history as another reviewer has suggested. For anyone looking for a study (and an attempted explanation) of an incredibly complex figure in 20th century American history, this is a fine addition to the mosaic. The book concludes with Moynihan's musings regarding what now means to be a liberal, and the role (and ability) of government vis a vis social problems. This is thought provoking and a challenge to many readers (including myself). What else can we expect from a biography?
As a lifelong Republican, I have admired the Senator from New York for decades. Honesty and integrity is an apparent oxymoron when defining any politician - Senator Moynihan was a man of great intellect, integrity, and purpose. The book was excellent. Well written and presenting the Senator in an honest and forthright posture. It left me with the question; "Where have all the good and honest men gone?"Kudos to the author - A serious study of our times and a page turner to those seeking any political truth.

This book, as nice as it is, is not about the interior design style sometimes called "Santa Fe". The subject is style in Santa Fe.
The books Santa Fe Style and Santa Fe Houses by Christine Mather and Sharon Woods are beautifully photographed and produced and a joy to read and study if you would like to create your own Santa Fe style no matter where you live.
A Real good book if you like to culture and relax-yourself into these peaceful older ways of living , it has a lot of basic illustrations with teachings of the Southwestern living and southwestern cultural fusion.A great book to own !I recommend it for architects like me!
Great book to get southwestern style ideas!!! Great price, too!!
I read it page by beautiful page. Awesome photos.
Awesome! Just as promised!
some beautiful photography, however, a bit too much black and white and gray photos.....with the gorgeous light and startling colors in the Santa Fe area, I'm disappointed that the book is mostly in black and white.
This book is very artistic. Lots of pictures of window, door and art work nicely displayed. I am glad I bought it.
